This was by far the most important episode of the series. We've waited a long time for this moment, and the payoff was fantasticwhile still leaving us with even more questions. What an emotional overload. Director absolutely killed it this week!

It's probably me reading too much into things, but what was with that shot of Mark when the police show up to tell him about Gemma. He backed out of the light so that only half his face was showing. Having half the face be light, half dark is almost universally a sign of someone who is battling good vs evil.

Im cool with it just being a very stylish shot, that I liked a lot.

Holy crap.

The most emotional, Lost-ian, Westworld-ish episode yet, in all the best ways.

Turns out Ms. Casey isn't a clone after all. Gemma never died and they're actually keeping her alive for some sick, unknown, ****ed-up-guinea-pig reason.

Lumon just went from me disliking them in a cutesy/funny/creepy way to wanting to see the entire company burn to the ground and every last non-severed employee lit on fire in the process.

Good Lord, what a show.
This episode felt like a sister project to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

No doubt. The shot of the shower water running up/in reverse was very Eternal Sunshine, in particular...

Anyone else notice how the Lumon scenes were pretty crystal clear and digital looking with very bright whites and contrasting colors?

While the flashbacks had a lot of film grain and were more washed out, but had a lot more color overall.

Probably more that I'm missing with the comparison between the two timelines. Just thought the film grain was a cool choice.

Agreed that the director did a superb job for her debut.

Better episode, this one or Woe's Hollow? I'm torn. In terms of plot, I think this was the most important episode of the series so far, and it was so well done. But god, the acting in
Woe's Hollow was incredible. Both are masterpieces

Definitely the biggest Lost moment for me (save for the flashback itself). Felt like something straight out of the Dharma Initiative.
What was really interesting there is they each had a matching partner. It wasn't as obvious with Mark and Helly but there was a distinct "Dylan" and "Irving".

I truly love this show, but "emotionally devastated?"

Honestly? Relatively speaking, of course, that actually was somewhat "emotionally devastating."

It's the Internet. Everything has to be hyperbole.

Everything? Seems hyperbolic to me.

You know. I am going to be the first to say what I know everyone is thinking. If you can end suffering in the world by kidnapping and torturing just one person, isn't it worth it? Every minute that Mark isn't working on Cold Harbor is another minute millions of people have to deal with the pain of a dental appointment, or the horror of writing Christmas cards. Mark is the bad guy, not Lumon. Praise Kier!

It's strange to me that Helly would have one. Was the matching partner there when Outie Helly was going to work every day?

This episode was arguably the best from quite a few perspectives.

The use of light throughout the series is one thing that I really like. The most natural/sun light the audience beared witness to was the scenes when Mark S and Gemma were dating/married. There is absolutely no natural light within the confines of Lumon, only artificial/electric light. Lots of darkness.

The half lit face of Mark S in the end of last night's episode was cinematically beautiful.

Makes sense as it was directed by a cinematographer. The change between their lifestyle scenes and the Lumon/severed scenes was really striking.

I'd guess there was previously a "Petey" that got replaced.

I dont think we ever learned exactly how much time passed between Petey leaving and Helly starting?

I went down this youtube rabbit hole a bit before the season, watching videos where she was describing the dolly zoom effect, the use of old lenses on new cameras, lighting, coloring, etc. Was absolutely fascinating to hear her perspective and get insight on some of the choices that were made.

In this ep I loved not only how the Mark and Gemma scenes were lit, but also had a much softer focus and old-school film feel. Just really striking visually and helps provide another level of distinction between the various "worlds" (flashback vs current, innie vs outie, etc).

Lots to unpack from last night. Clearly they are testing how the severance chip responds to trauma. I'm wondering if Cold Harbor is the testing room that deals with Gemma's death. The weirdo doc talking about her "siring" a new world in Kier-speak, combined with the big dude's comments that the doc would have to "let her go" once Cold Harbor is finished, plus the weirdo baby with the Kier head in the intro. Toss in Iriving/Burt dinner and the heaven/hell and separate souls random conversation, and I'm here:

(1) They want a master chip that can isolate everything without any bleed over, no matter the trauma.
(2) All they have left to test is whether the death of one consciousness kills the other consciousnesses, and if so, is there any bleed over.
(3) Once they figure out if a severed consciousness can survive the death of another consciousness, they are going to use that chip to try and bring back Kier. Maybe he severed before he died and they have him in cold storage or something, and they want to know how the chip will respond if they bring him out and whether it's possible his severed consciousness is still awake.

Either that, or they are going to use Mark and Gemma to generate a baby and implant it with some super Kier consciousness chip that won't remember he died already.

Kier would have died like 70 or 80 years ago, can't imagine they had any sort of ability to sever them. Maybe more of a sampled DNA/clone situation.

I didn't catch this last night, but one the few recaps I just watched mentioned that the intro had a slight change this week. There's a brief scene where the animated innie and outer Marks actually help each other.

Perhaps another hint that he is reintegrated by the end of the episode?

Has the intro been slightly changing each week or is this a first?

I'm in the minority here probably, but I wasn't a huge fan of Woe's Hollow. I definitely liked this one more.

Need to give Dichen Lachman (Gemma) her due as well, she was excellent in this episode.
I also liked her in that first couple appearances of the early seasons of Altered Carbon as well

I feel totally lost this season. I don't know what Cold Harbor is. I can't understand if Gemma's death was real or some sort of elaborate coverup. I did enjoy the Woe's Hollow episode, but am utterly confused where this is going at this point.

I still don't understand why everything at Lumon is dated from the 1960s and mostly analog.

Unless I'm missing something (which is totally possible) I don't think anyone knows for sure what Cold Harbor is? Lot of speculation. I originally thought it was some sort of reference to the "traffic accident" that ostensibly took Gemma's life. And I do think last night's episode dispelled then notion that she actually did die.

Cold Harbor was first introduced as a file that Mark S. was working on. Lumon's position is that it's paramount for Mark to complete this file. We don't know why. But we know after last night that it has something to do with the stress torture rooms Gemma's innies are being subjected to. Gemma's death was most likely a coverup, but we don't know the full details.

Lumon is mostly "modern analog" because it's a stylistic choice by the show runners. I think it could also be symbolic for how monopolies and lack of competition reduces the need to innovate.
