I see this thread pop up and for some reason I think there has been an announcement like S2 is starting soon. And then reality hits that it's not.

Random comment: when Dylan walks into that house that is inside the severance HQ it totally looks like MeowWolf. For anyone that knows what the hell I'm talking about, you might see that too.

I like wine.

Its pretty good, but maybe not so much for me. I like cool concepts but this is a bit slow and a bit of a reach. The first few episodes were way too slow imo. My wife completely bailed but i'll stick it out, if only for the strange tension it brings, and maybe a thing for a redhead.

Stick it out. My wife had the same reaction, but the last couple of episodes convinced her to go back and rewatch with me. It's a slow burn that ramps up exponentially.

Agreed. It took me a couple episodes. My wife wanted to join in, so I restarted after two episodes. Loved it, and it got crazy fast.

Severance received 14 Emmy nominations: https://www.emmys.com/shows/severance

Four of them were for the season finale. Scott, Turturro, Walken, and Arquette all received acting nominations.

Nah, I need her to balance out my inner nerd. She's just not into sci-fi. Period pieces are her thing. I keep telling her that a lot of sci-fi is just period pieces set in the future, but she doesn't go for it.
Just started season 3 of For All Mankind. Give that a go with her. It's a sci-fi period piece set in the past.

FYI, this was our household. My wife bailed early but I stuck it out because I kept hearing about it and knew there had to be a big payoff. She watched the last 3-4 episodes with me and is back in. The first half of the season is just building characters. The last episode we were both trying to guess what was going to happen next.

I bet there's a lot of people that are going to bail early. It's pretty slow to start, IMO, but when it gets going it doesn't stop.

I was one of the early bailouts. Watched two episodes and forgot about it.

Mentioned it to my wife who thought it sounded crazy and wanted to try it. Rewatching the first episode, I was completely hooked

So, I've been avoiding this thread for a while even though I posted the OP - finally got through our Disney backlog and switched over. Boy, what a fantastic show.

Definitely has some of the best vibes from Lost. However, Lost was always analogous to a Ponzi scheme for me. Somehow, the solving one mystery by borrowing from another mystery left the impression they could never deliver on the final element of the story (and they didn't). I can't put my finger on it, but somehow Severance has managed to better satisfy some intrigue and reward its viewers with answers while meanwhile creating new intrigue. I've got a lot more confidence that the storytellers can ultimately reconcile most, if not all, of the loose ends.

Agree with a lot of the sentiment on the discussion. The visuals are excellent. Tramell Tillman's acting chops as Mr. Milchick's are superior - his ability to go from all smiles to stone cold and back are ridiculous. I also think they've hit the sweet spot in the real vs over-the-top feeling of a big corporate environment - very relatable for many office workers. My one criticism - Irving's OTC experience seemed mostly pointless. Definitely not as measured as Helly's and Mark's.

I'm really interested to see how Mark and Helly make it back to their Innie state. You'd think Lumon wouldn't let them back in and that they're a big risk to the company at this point, and likewise, why would Mark Scout go back in? Looking forward to season 2.

Also, Are we to take it that the show is set in current time? Obviously inside they are working in a very 50s/60s aesthetic but it seems like the cars and style and whatnot outie are old too
They have flip phones. What throws me off is the tech in the company is all old analog stuff. And Mrs Selvig speaks with a trans-atlantic accent which has pretty much died out a while back for people her age. All the music outside Lumon is 80's or 90's (metallica, motorhead). I'd guess it's early 2000's.

I just finished it. I was just telling my buddy this morning how slow the show is. I felt the middle episodes really dragged. I kept finding myself having to rewind because I kept picking up my phone out of boredom. But the characters are well written and I think the premise of the show and mystery kept me hooked. The last couple episodes it feels like it starts to pick up and pick up until all the sudden the credits start rolling.

IMO, I think they're going for a purposefully timeless look/setting. I don't think it takes place in any specific time period, other than the "modern era," obviously, in order to disorient the audience and give it an almost dreamy quality.

If you go back a few pages there were a couple articles posted about the design and the approach to it, definitely intentional mixing of analog and digital elements.

It's pretty cool, but it is hard to reconcile (from episode 1) that innies know some general outside information (e.g, US states) but don't know what modern technology looks like. At least they never talk about when we're around.

I wonder if it will ever be explained or it's just part of the show's unique vibe. The only thing I can think of is for Lumin to ensure no connectivity to the outside world.

I think this is the element of the show where you're just expected to suspend disbelief. If they shut out literally all memories of the outside world when they go in, how would they even know how to speak English, or remember basic human functions and experiences, like how to use devices or what certain foods taste like? How would you know how to read or write if you had no memory whatsoever of anything you've ever read or written?

Was actually thinking that after I posted last night. Like there's multiple things that point to different eras. Pretty cool

People with amnesia can still talk and read and write, and have an overall understanding of a lot of things beyond their missing memories. So perhaps the technology to control memory is more selective than we can understand now, but is theoretically still possible.

The opening scene establishes the effects of severance. Helly knows that Delaware is a state but not where she is from. She doesn't need to know know how that works, and neither do we, really. We start the show just as confused as she is and really only ever learn what she learns.

I have been rewatching.

As others have said, Irv is definitely painting the corridor and elevator door that Ms. Casey descends on back down to the Testing Floor. So Irv's innie must have gone that way as well.

Ms. Casey says to Mark in the last Wellness meeting that her life has been 107 hours long. She adds that the eight hours she spent in MDR watching Helly was the longest she had ever been awake.

What are we to make of that?

She wonders if she is happy "up there." Milchick assures her she is.

She is very self-aware in that she knows that she is not awake all the time and she is afraid of going back to the Testing Floor.

What in the world is happening to her on the "Testing Floor" she is being sent to? Irv has been sent there too.

I finished the season last night. Anybody have any theories on what's going on with Irv (aside from needing to get laid so he can be a productive member of the team). Lots of questions marks:

-Falling asleep at work perhaps intentional? If intentional, maybe to store some of the workplace memories in his dream state subconscious that can then potentially be accessed outside? This seems possible given that he's dreaming (or hallucinating?) about the outtie black paint while at work.
-Paintings - perhaps the hallway that not-dead Gemma walks down when she's fired? Why would Irv have gone down that hallway or have any memory of that, and how does outtie Irv know what that looks like?
-List of severed employees - outtie Irv has some anti-severance agenda and has planted innie Irv to try to gather information?
-Ace of Spades perhaps just a rocking metal song to paint to, or maybe symbolic of Irv's past? The ace of spades, apparently also known as the death card, could be some clue regarding Irv's past is he also not dead like Gemma?

To me the best way to describe this show is Lost + The Prisoner (1967 edition). It's got all the intrigue/mystery of Lost with the aesthetic (and duplicitous characters) of The Prisoner. It's a very cool mix.

Late to the party, but that was awesome. Some moments that have already been mentioned but I really enjoyed:
  • Defiant Jazz dance party
  • Irv: "You smug motherf***er"
  • Dylan: "F*** you, Mr Mlichek!"

Also, no one has mentioned that it was revealed in the finale that they live in a town called Kier. I thought that the address showed PE for the state, as in a fictitious one. But DE for Delaware would make more sense.
