*** WARNING: SUPER NERDY DESIGN DEEP DIVE ***I'm all in on the new suit/armor. It's a cool, tactical, linebacker-ish look that is believable as homemade, and stands apart from all previous suits. I really do love it.
What I'm still not sold on is the new cowl.
First of all, I *do* like that it's a return to the wide jawline area that reveals more of the face. Bale's smaller chin/moth opening made the most sense in terms of an effective disguise, but this...
... is reminiscent of the wide, classic Keaton jawline area that I always loved the most...
What I'm not a huge fan of is the nose and the ears. The wide, rounded nose looks too old school to me, and I'm not a fan of the way the ears are flatter and seem to angle outwards, almost looking like antenna...
Re: the ears, the above has a
slightly goofy, '43 Batman vibe to me...
IMO, the best ears were from Keaton's suit and Bale's TDK suit...
... with Bale's my favorite overall. The way the ears angle all the way down to the top of the jawline gives the entire cowl such a solid, part-of-the-whole, well-designed feel. While, comparatively, again, the ears almost feel like an afterthought on
The Batman cowl.
However, this is the best angle/look of the new cowl I've seen by far, where it all seems to work together best...
All that said, we have almost zero context in terms of the look/production design for the rest of the movie. And if it has a hint of the rumored '70s crime movie feel, combined with the gothic London vibe of Gotham we seem to be getting in this iteration, the cowl should look better and make more sense on film and in its intended surroundings.
