I think the Joker sits it out a while. But then again, nothing moves the needle like him, so maybe they roll out yet another iteration for the sequel.

I'd like to see a proper Scarecrow. I enjoyed Cillian Murphy's portrayal in the Nolanverse, but that was pretty half-assed to what the character normally is. I would also like to see Mr. Freeze done right, and think he is a likely candidate to show up eventually.

Also, I wonder if they'd do a Catwoman spinoff of When in Rome. That's actually a pretty fun story that's a companion to The Long Halloween, if any of you have ever read it.

He's talking about The Long Halloween. Two-Face/Harvey Dent is probably the second biggest character. Joker isn't that big in it to be honest. Riddler is fairly prominent.

But the Harvey Dent/Two Face storyline from Long Halloween was basically already adapted to The Dark Knight. It's where "I Believe In Harvey Dent" originated.

Gotcha. Yeah, I was the one who posted that rumor, but it felt more like a "loosely inspired by" kind of thing rather than an actual adaptation, if that news is even accurate to begin with. I'm pretty sure Reeves is making this own, unique thing regardless. Either way, that's just the first movie. I'm mainly asking if saving the Joker for the sequel would be too much of a riff on how Nolan introduced the character, saving him for the second movie in that trilogy as well. So do you "risk" that, save the Joker for the third movie, or not feature him at all in the trilogy (assuming this is a trilogy)?

Five years from now? A sequel would presumably come around 2024, which would be exactly five years after Phoenix, if that's what you're talking about.

Ok cool. That's good to know. It would be pretty sweet to really dig into Riddler/Penguin for the first two movies and then bring in the granddaddy of them all for the final installment. Would further separate itself more from Nolan's iteration, too.

I think third movie if at all

Joker is the greatest villain in history in my opinion, so hard to think of him sitting this out, but he's been everywhere recently so maybe they want to avoid oversaturation? And there are some great villains they can reboot or use for the first time. I don't know the tone that Reeves will go with, and I realize these are sillier villains, but I think we end up seeing Scarecrow, Clayface, Man-Bat, Poison Ivy, and hopefully Mr. Freeze, because he's actually a phenomenal character

Missed this before. It does sound like there's plenty of non-Joker content for two movies. Or, rather, enough to keep audiences from asking where the hell the Joker is. The more I think about it, the cooler it would be to save him for the potential third movie. As amazing as TDK is, it did kind of blow its load in the second installment. Granted, I'm sure Ledger would have been back for TDKR had he not died, but you just know there would be a MASSIVE fever pitch for the Joker again after two movies, come 2027 or whenever the third Pattinson movie finally hits.

That's a really good point. The Riddler does seem like more of the natural, thematic adversary to a more detective-centric Batman, which this will reportedly be. A Seven//Kevin Spacey-esque/mastermind Riddler across two movies could be epic. Batman finally takes him down (along with a handful of other villains) at the end of the sequel, and then boom... here comes the Joker for part three.

I believe I read an article about Nolan saying that the third movie would be about Joker facing the system, but they had to pivot to Bane and a Knightfall adaptation once Ledger died.

I also think teasing Joker for the third movie, similar to Nolan teasing him at the end of Batman Begins, would be a great way to hype up the end of the trilogy.

Agreed. I remember reading the script for Batman Begins a couple years before it came out (It leaked pretty early on in the process) and I lost my mind at the Joker card reveal at the end. I just thought that was so damn clever, and I wanted to tell everyone I knew how it ended. Having Reeves do his version of something like that at the end of his sequel, hyping up the end of the trilogy, would be so cool.

That actually came pretty much verbatim from the Year One comic, which if you haven't read is really good.

If Reeves truly is adapting The Long Halloween in some capacity, that's a story that could easily span a trilogy if they wanted to. It covers a crime mystery over the course of something like 13 comics with Batman defeating or facing other villians along the way. That would be awesome to see spread out over multiple films

So what happens if Birds of Prey and Suicide Squad 2.0 are huge, huge hits? Do they then have some kind of crossover with Reeves Batman? They already existed in the Affleckverse. What happens if everyone loves Harley and Black Mask?

Do they just cross that bridge if/when they get there?

I agree. Although year one was as much a Gordon story as a Batman one. I'd love to see them flesh out his backstory more on film. The comics show some different sides to him that we haven't seen much of on film that really make him a great character.

In agreement that they'll likely just not address it. I think audiences have gotten a lot savvier in the past few years about understanding all the different universes. No one confused Phoenix's Joker for Leto's, and I think it'll be just as clear that Pattinson isn't a younger Affleck, but a completely separate thing. And then I don't think Birds of Prey 2 or Suicide Squad 3 or whatever they do ever really has to mention Batman in that world again. Or maybe that's ALL you do - just mention him if need be and that's it.

In agreement with both points. In fact, I think SS2 will be massive. Early August release date with virtually no competition for a good month or so after. And the more I read, the more apparent it is that this is a huge passion project for Gunn. WB/DC essentially said he could direct any property they had and he chose this one above everything else. It wasn't some fired-from-GOTG3, I'll-take-what-I-can-get job. He's been a big Suicide Squad fanboy forever. That, and it obviously has an insane cast with some amazing comedic talent. I think all the ingredients are there for an out-of-the-park home run.

Crazy to think it's been filming for a couple of weeks already but comes out six weeks AFTER The Batman, which won't start filming for another three months or so. WB/DC could have an incredible summer 2021 at the box office...

I feel like Birds of Prey will be sort of like Shazam. Good word of mouth, good reviews, but makes less than $500mm at the box office. Unless James Gunn is a Marvel sleeper agent trying to push DC down even further, Suicide Squad will be a huge hit. Just see how much the first one made, and it wasn't even good. If he can turn a tree into a more lovable character than Superman, the sky is the limit for this movie.

Earth One has a great batsuit. Earth One's Batman isn't as trained as the regular Batman, and is nowhere near as good of a detective. The batsuit is the most realistic, though.
