Superman was killed in the doomsday comic. It's not like he's gone for good though. They indicated he was still alive in the final scene.

Ok, I knew he was killed in the comics just didn't know any details. Wasn't Doomsday supposed to be more ominous in the comics too?

In the comics, Doomsday destroyed entire cities on his way to Metropolis. Kind of hard to do that though in a movies so full of stuff anyway I guess.

Doomsday did far more than that in the comics. He wiped out countless civilizations, obliterated the Green Lantern Corps to the tune of hundreds of dead Green Lanterns, almost killed Darkseid, survived being completely removed from the timestream, etc. Comic book Doomsday was a walking no limits fallacy with zero weaknesses and the power to adapt and evolve beyond what killed him (this happened faster and faster each time to the point where he would become immune to whatever hurt him previously in seconds). This is why he ultimately had to be depowered, he was simply too powerful for anyone but literal cosmic beings to defeat.

This is why he was called Doomsday.

No, he had zero weaknesses. For all intents and purposes, comic book Doomsday was unkillable except through author fiat. Basically, DC created an unstoppable character and had to later depower him as a result since they wrote themselves into a corner.

If he's not immune to kryptonite, then he has a weakness.

Doomsday was never vulnerable to Kryptonite in the comics. He was immune to any and all forms of damage from anything that didn't have galaxy destroying power and even then he would just adapt to it and come back immune to that as well. That's why I called him a walking no limits fallacy and why the DC writers wrote themselves into a corner when he first came about.

Here's Superman wikia's list of deaths for Doomsday: http://superman.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_Doomsday's_Deaths

I think probably my favorite is the New 52: Ripped in half by Superman.

This thread played out as expected.

Critics hate it, but everybody still goes to see. Most realize that it had issues but some good parts and not near as bad as the critics made it out to be. TCTTS comes on here with a diatribe of "I like it, but have to say it sucked as to make sure I confirm with the elite crowd".

My thoughts:

A better writer could have helped the first hour and a half setup... didn't flow well. Of course if you understand anything about comic books they are the biggest mess of confusing crap out there. Even the writers do not have a clue most of the time. All that comes from comic books are good shell of stories and iconic characters. Trying to follow and understand them will drive you insane. Even the "New 52" has become over inflated just a few years in.

They nailed Superman and his struggle, people actually think he is a god. Yet he struggles with his place on Earth, as he has no place else to go. I personally didn't see them playing out the death of superman so soon in the DCU.

I like afflecks batman, thought he played it well. Understood were they were going with his hate for Superman. Then he realized that he has thoughts, feelings, and emotions that equate to humanity.

Wonder Woman was nails and I can't wait for her movie.

Les Luthor was meh.

The first hour and a half was a mess but they got the point across. The last hour of fighting was good.

Yep, you got me. I'm a ******* sheep. Gotta make sure all those "elite" critics who read TexAgs see me agreeing with them.

Or... I had fun watching an objectively sh*tty movie.

The optimist side of me is hoping that the extended 3-hr version will address the biggest problems with the movie in the first half.

Some stuff HAD to be cut out that hurt the flow of the story.

Probably. Gonna assume Snyder had to leave it in since that is the basis of Bruce getting the JL together, right?

If you genuinely need 3ish hours, however, that to me says you either needed to make two movies or need to reevaluate your story at a very base level (LOTR notwithstanding).

Seeing it tonight and I'll check back in with a more informed opinion.

Well, Bruce is paranoid so I guess but I still think that was a pretty terrible way to go about it. IIRC, most of the time where the JL is formed, there is an external threat to Earth. I believe one of the more notable formations of the JL was when Darkseid attacked Earth (what I strongly suspect JL Part 1 will focus around since his name was all but said). In the DCAU (which I'm more familiar with) for the Justice League (and the subsequent JLU series) what brought about the formation of the JL was the invasion by the Imperium IIRC.

One thing about Bruce's last dream sequence in the film has bothered me though. That doesn't come across so much as a dream, but a vision of a possible future. Something that I think that Ezra Miller's Flash caused to some extent. We had Darkseid's Omega symbol, his minions, and a Superman that was in more of an overseer role.

Even if you could some how connect the Flash to his vision of that future, there's no way it doesn't still come across as forced. I think the better way would have been to do it would have been to omit the dream sequences and play up Bruce finding the files and looking into that. Looking at the files and still wanting to form a team as he talked with Diana at the end of the film would still work. It would have fit better with the first bit of the film (Batman being the detective/spy thriller) IMO.

Is this what it feels like to be a casual movie goer? Where you just watch something for two+ hours, are completely unaffected by it, and have absolutely no interest in the next one until you find yourself sitting in the theater again? Because that's how I feel right now. Kind of entertained, knowing I should be way more frustrated than I am, but also knowing this sh*t will never change, and just kind of numb to it overall.
Well close, but I consider my self a casual movie goer and I do anticipate the next one if I'm entertained by the current one. And if you're entertained, why should you be frustrated at all? Because the critics say you should? And no, I'm not calling you a sheep. I really am curious.

Not a comic guy here, just movies.

Before it came out:
I really didn't like the idea of BA as the new batman but I wanted to reserve judgement till after I watched the movie. I was also thinking... How can batman actually have a chance against superman. It doesn't make sense. The last thing I had difficulty wrapping my head around were the villains. Batman has always faced crime individuals where as superman faced more alien godly villains that were threats to human existence.

After watching it:
I liked Ben. As a matter of fact I liked all characters except for maybe Luther. I guess I pictured more of a physical presence, not a squirley rich businessman. I agree with someone else that said he'd make a good Riddler. <that seems spot on, kudos to whoever mentioned that.

The fight scenes - I thought the BM V SM scene was believable & I enjoyed it. The doomsday scene was a bit much. In reality tens of thousands of people would've died in that scene. It's just weird to me to see collateral damage but then again that's the motivation for BM's opposition of Superman.

I thought the movie was rushed but then again it was filled with many characters. I could've used a Luther background & maybe more WW. But as I think about it, I did like the mystery of WW.

Man of steel probably should've had a cameo or a Luther character to give his motivation to the non comic book peeps out there. It just doesn't make that much sense.

Anyways, I thought I'd share my tidbit. I still liked this movie & will probably go watch it again with some friends.

I actually think that Snyder tried to make the film more like an actual comic book and that's what created all the disjointed transitions that is one of the major complaints. Watching it, the transitions felt just like reading a comic book as they're notorious for just jumping from one scene to the next. As an avid comic reader, I really liked that, but I can see how it pisses a lot of people off.

One question -

Have been looking around online but can't seem to find any explanation. Who was the guy that Bruce was on the phone with during the Superman/Zod fight? I thought he called him "Father" but knew later on that Thomas Wayne was already dead in 1981...

Saw this last night at the new Alamo in Dallas (great place!). I agree with a lot of the points made on here.

It was enjoyable in many parts, but there were times when I could tell they were trying to get somewhere and just couldn't stick the landing.

The dream sequences started out okay but then they went too far with the desert apocalypse fake confrontation between B and S. So is Batman actually seeing things that could come to be, a la Tony Stark's vision in AoU? There was a supernatural element to Scarlet Witch putting the whammy on Stark, so what led Bruce Wayne to dreaming this? And then the false wake-up only to then be visited by a time-travelling Flash? But also in a dream?

I don't buy that other than the story needing it.

One other thing that I haven't seen addressed... when Batman is chasing Lex's people to steal the Kryptonite, what draws Superman there to intervene? And after telling Batman to stop being Batman, why is there no reference to what he was doing in the first place? Superman flies off, letting Batman go, and not caring about why he was attacking the convoy? (and causing tons of damage )

I think Supes was pissed at Batman due to the pictures he received at the Daily Planet, which were actually sent by Lex. (Not sure why those pictures were supposed to elicit that response from him though.)
