Instinctively I understood this, but this is the first time I've seen it spelled out.
It was a bit confusing the first time I watched this movie, but now that I've seen it twice (considering a third viewing, if time permits) I really think Chris Nolan is a genius. Look at page 1 of this thread, where someone complained that he was going to make a WWII movie and wished he would tackle something clever and new. I really think that Nolan did just that with how he presented this movie. This is not a run-of-the-mill movie, WWII or otherwise.
This year has been a pretty good year for movies ... Logan, Beauty and the Beast, Kong Skull Island, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2, Wonder Woman, and Spider-Man Homecoming ... but Dunkirk blows them all out of the water (pun kinda intended)
