The only shot of a German soldier was at the very end when Hardy was captured after he landed on the beach, and even then it was out of focus.

I got three sentences into that bizarre, man-hating rant by a woman who despite her initial claim does not actually "get it" and was coming over here to say that her review actually sets the women's equality movement back a few steps with how ridiculous it is. I was going to write that her review did the worst possible thing it could do to try and get her point across.

But I was wrong.

Because, as I was about to click away, an ad popped up. And I realized that there are worse things you can do to the struggle for equality. That ad is below.



I stand corrected, Marie Claire. The review wasn't that backwards, all things considered.

She didn't like it because she couldn't focus on anything else after the one direction guy showed up. And a movie about dunkirk didn't tell a story about women in war. And if a man tries to argue in favor of the movie it's further proof that the movie was only for men. Sounds like it was too intense for her and she had to manufacture a reason for not liking it.

I saw it opening weekend I I honestly thought it was OK.

It was intense but it was also confusing using 3 timelines simultaneously. It was also very repetitive. The same scenes kept being played out over and over like Groundhog Day. They get on a boat. The boat goes down. They get on a boat, the boat goes down - repeat.

It was good but not great.

God, Debra was the worst. Remember the episode where she asked him if he wished she had bigger boobs? He says "No, you are perfect." Then when he gets back, she has stuffed her bra to see if he gets excited, and then gets mad at him when he is happy for her?

1) that woman is proof that being a movie "critic" requires absolutely zero pedigree or justification for why we should value their opinion.

2) that woman is just plain stupid. The word stupid was invented to describe intellects like hers.

3) zero doubts in my mind that she's extremely annoying in real life. As in, most men zone out after the first 20 minutes of a date with her and start thinking of an excuse to end it early, type of annoying.

Those were German soldiers in out of focus silhouette at the end after Hardy landed his Spitfire on the beach, but yeah, that was the only shot of a German in the entire movie other than the airplanes, where we never saw any of the crew

I liked it. My girlfriend found the 3 timelines to be somewhat detrimental, or perhaps more trouble than they're worth. I get that the plane scenes would have been tucked into 10 minutes at the end of the film chronologically, however, so they kind of had to.

However, I seem to remember a similar bit in Interstellar where McC was doing something important, and the film kept cutting back to his daughter burning down some fields or something. It felt distracting, like a way to artificially crank up the epicness.

I felt a little bit of that in this one too. For example, the guys being shot at in the beached boat - I feel like the tension was broken because it would cut to 20 seconds of Cillian Murphy being upset or 12 seconds of Hardy low on fuel. Not everything has to intersect at all times. There can be situational tension without that added bit of ADD.

Saw it in IMAX last night and it was pretty amazing. Still processing a bit. I do think the 3 timelines was confusing...certainly a stunning bit of filmmaking.

The Mark Rylance and the pilots' stories were incredibly compelling. I was less invested in the beach soldiers' stories - I understand it was meant to be Everyman but I had difficulty following who was who.

I'm going to need to warn my dad, who I think is hoping for a traditional war movie telling the story of Dunkirk. I'll also make sure he doesn't wear his hearing aids.

The IMAX would be the Edwards Marqee and the 70 MM would be the Edwards Greenway. Leaning towards the IMAX since I know the sound in that theater will be good and it would be a crapshoot on the the other

I saw it at the Marquee and had a great experience. Assuming you're talking about the RPX screen at the Greenway, that's a great theater, but you seriously might bring ear plugs because they often turn the sound up to 11. Also, the Greenway doesn't have reserve seating, if that makes a difference.

I'm not sure there's a narrative reason for it, but if I had to guess I'd say that he needed to kill as much air speed as possible before trying to land on the sand. Also, once his gear didn't work, he needed to stay in the air for as long as he could so he could crank it down.

Yes, be sure to do this. I took my 79-year-old dad last week, telling him to expect a truly fantastic movie. When we got out, I asked him what he thought, especially considering the kinda blank expression I saw on his face. He said he didn't like it, and that he got nothing out of it. This surprised me because we typically enjoy the same movies...

While my dad liked the movie very much, he too was a bit let down because he was hoping for a little more set up, more explanation of why there were 400,000 men on the beach. Not because he didn't know why - he's a bit of a WWII buff - but because he wanted to see the whole story of Dunkirk told on the big screen.

I personally have no gripe with the lack of explanation or not seeing Nazi soldiers, but I get why people might be let down for that. My dad is 75, so same age range as yours.

My dad loved it, my mom thought it was fine, and one of my sisters and her boyfriend both legit hated it. I really do think the three timelines are throwing a lot of people off. Yes, Nolan does a good job of setting them up (even though "The Mole" is confusing a lot of people as well), but it takes a TON of context clues to understand that "The Sea" isn't just "one day" but the FINAL day of that week and that "The Air" isn't just "one hour" but the FINAL hour of that week. And the muddled/British dialogue isn't helping either, as pertinent lines that help indicate that are just being completely missed.

That said, I'm not suggesting Nolan should have done it any differently. I don't even know how he could have made it any clearer without additional, awkward titles. I personally love that it's basically a puzzle, I'm just echoing that yeah, a decent chunk of audiences aren't going to a war movie like this expecting to have to "solve" it.

I totally understood the movie and really appreciated the cinematography, but overall, it just didn't do it for me. However, based on how some of you are raving about it, I'll be sure to see it again and hope that my opinion changes.

Thought it was good but not great. I saw it in IMAX 70mm and thought it looked amazing and was shot amazing. It made it a really enjoyable movie experience and was definitely worth the ticket just to see the scenes and the shots. Even if there wasn't a story at all, I'd pay $14 just to go into the 70mm IMAX and watch plane scenes and war scenes.

But I kinda felt that is shat I paid for. I was never really on the edge of my seat for most of the movie bc there wasn't much storyline and I didn't care about the characters at all. I went in knowing this is what it would be like but I was still a little surprised at just how little story there was.

thoight it was a great movie experience but not a great movie, if that makes any sense. Don't think I'll care to watch it at home if it comes out on hbo.

Instinctively I understood this, but this is the first time I've seen it spelled out.

It was a bit confusing the first time I watched this movie, but now that I've seen it twice (considering a third viewing, if time permits) I really think Chris Nolan is a genius. Look at page 1 of this thread, where someone complained that he was going to make a WWII movie and wished he would tackle something clever and new. I really think that Nolan did just that with how he presented this movie. This is not a run-of-the-mill movie, WWII or otherwise.

This year has been a pretty good year for movies ... Logan, Beauty and the Beast, Kong Skull Island, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2, Wonder Woman, and Spider-Man Homecoming ... but Dunkirk blows them all out of the water (pun kinda intended)

Saw this last night in 70mm IMAX and it was absolutely incredible.


It's still early, but at this point if this doesn't win Best Picture I'll lose all faith in the Academy.
