All of breaking bad occurred in basically 2 years, correct?
Yes, but this is years before the start of BB

Jimmy had two brothers - Chuck and Marco. Both of them are dead to him now.

Ever been involved in a class action case? 10 years is not unusual at all. There can be multiple appeals at each stage in the process.

I thought in breaking bad Walter had at least 3 birthdays. Maybe not

He did. But the last one was a flash forward to the last few days of his life. There was a fairly significant jump in time in season 5.

He had three birthdays, but it was two years. Started when he turned 50, ended when he turned 52.

Had no idea that was the finale... So are Marco & Jimmy related or just bro's.

I was speaking of Marco figuratively as a brother, but you can tell they have (had) a very strrong bond.

Chuck didnt seem dead to Jimmy, either.

Jimmy spent at least a year indulging Chucks phobia and making sure he had food to eat. He is his brother, and at the end of the second to last episode he said, "You're on your own."

Sounds like he is done with Chuck.

But he went back to check on Chuck even after he had made his decree to not let morals get in his way anymore.

He also made sure Hamlin was going to take care of the list of items.

And I liked the con montage. They did the half dollar, ran the montage, woke up as Kevin Costner, tried one last Rolex job all in about 10-15 minutes.

Marco dies, Jimmy realizes how much he enjoys that stuff driving in to the meeting and boom...Jimmy moves towards being Saul.

I thought it was a great set up.

This would be very interesting.

Finally had a chance to watch it...and this review I thought summed up my feelings pretty well.

Great first season, rough ending.

I just felt like the week with his buddy didn't seem all that amazing, and his buddy had a heart attack and died.

It just seemed like the decision was too quick for him at the end to bail out of the meeting completely. I'd have rather the Chicago stuff didn't last quite as long and that we would have gotten a little more thought process in between the buddy's funeral and driving off saying it won't stop me again!

Love the show and will wait impatiently for next season.

i disagree. he spent a decade trying to live up to his hero brother. he did everything to please him including taking care of him. he finds an amazing case on his own. then, finds out it was his brother torpedoing him all along and he doesn't really think Jimmy's accomplished anything. that was pretty devastating. we got plenty of it in my opinion.

i think writers and directors are finally getting over the whole "the finale has to be a massive cliffhanger to make sure people come back for next season" crap. the penultimate episode is a biggie and the final episode provides resolution like it should.

I just had a hard time buying that Jimmy was so ready to just give up a good chance to getting on his way to being a partner at a big firm and be wealthy legitimately. Why would he not even take the meeting?

I just wish he went to the meeting and something there happened to change his mind. Maybe the guys were jerks, or maybe they find out something about him and it blows up on him. It would be easy to fit that in with less chicago.

and keep in mind this was season 1 - and when they wrote/filmed it they likely had no idea if there would be a season 2....so you at least want the idea that he will become Saul at the end of season 1.

if there was nothing after the first season filmed at least you would have some resolution to how and why he became Saul.

Take you pick...

A) A Salamanca family member/cartel member who thinks Saul screwed over his family
B) Some other random Mexican cartel members who think they were screwed over by Saul
C) Some other random gang banger/drug dealer who thinks he was screwed over by Saul
D) Some Gus Fring henchman/family member who thinks Saul helped Gus get killed
E) One of the hundreds of former criminal clients who now think Saul is a snitch

This is what I thought...at least show the meeting and there be a little more of a trigger. Like one of the guys there was exactly like his brother or something. I don't know. Or he sees one of them in the parking lot walking into the building before him and over hears something crappy the guy says.

I just felt like he pulled into the parking lot, got out, got back in, pulled up to Mike and said eff it a little more quickly than I would have liked.

I do understand the post above saying they weren't sure about another season, so I get ending it somewhere they felt like they could leave it if they have to.

Just didn't need 20 minutes in Chicago in the episode and would rather them have crafted that last scene a little more. But that's my opinion. Still love the show.

The entire season tells you why he made the switch in the parking lot. He reconciled that playing by the rules was not his comfort zone. The week he spent with his pal, he was back to his normal self. His friend and his brother were correct, Jimmy will never change. He embraced being the monkey with the machine gun.

Overall it was a great first season. Love the Mike story being told as well.

That said, I thought the finale left a bit to be desired and was one of the weaker episodes of the season. I just didn't buy his reason for "breaking bad".

I thought this. But really, Chuck sent him over the edge. He emulated his brother. His changed his whole life to be like him. And then, after achieving pretty good success as a lawyer, Chuck told him he would always be a con-man and that he would be embarrassed by Jimmy.

To Jimmy, screw this. You want a con-man, I'll give you a con-man.
Again, I think Chuck had more to do this with this than anything.

I just find it hard to believe that Jimmy was not enticed enough by the idea to show up Chuck by getting to partner at a big law firm that he wouldn't at least go to the meeting.

I think his motivation was less about showing up Chuck than it was becoming Chuck. He turned his back on his most loyal friend for 10 years to please Chuck and it got him nowhere. In fact, he spent 10 years working his ass off only to have his own brother cut his legs out from under him. In contrast, he sees his buddy for 5 minutes, after a 10 year hiatus, and they pick up right where they left off. No greater loyalty than that of his own pal. He didn't need his brother Chuck. He just needed his buddy Marco

Jimmy was never rich being a con man. And he was always in or in threat of legal trouble. I understand money isn't everything but I just think he cares enough about money that he would find the idea of being a rich lawyer, which he will now never be, something to at least give a shot.

You are not Jimmy. He wanted to be Chuck and wanted to make Chuck proud. But even becoming a partner in a law firm, he would still be Slippin Jimmy to Chuck.

but he has struggled as a lawyer for years already and is nowhere close to rich....

perhaps it occurred to him that:

a. as a simple con man he'll never be rich
b. as a honest lawyer (from American Samoa U.) he was also not getting rich

but

c. as a con artist/lawyer with his instincts he could be very rich

especially considering he had $1.5 million at one point recently and didn't take that opportunity.

thats more than he ever had a shot at with a or b.

Where he lamented the 1.6 mill is where he made the decision in the way I see it. Sure, he was likely getting a pretty good payoff for the old folks home case, but it was always alluded to as "several years from now". If you really want to get deep about it, he had a couple of days from getting ready to and flying back from Chicago to Albuquerque and pre meeting to do plenty of final soul searching up to the point of crossing the threshold to the courthouse building in the parking lot.

Why would he think he would ever run across another situation like that where he had access to millions of dollars stolen by a white collar family where he would not have to fear them hunting him down if he sole it? That was a once in a lifetime chance.

I'm assuming he was painting with a broader brush than just that exact scenario.
