I used to enjoy working in my office with the overhead light off, using only a desk light. Now when I do that, everyone looks at me like I'm Chuck...

One of my least favorite things in the world is "what if this thing is actually brilliant!"

He makes a few decent points but I don't see how the audience was supposed to pick up on any east/west traveling in the last scene, unless I just wasn't paying that much attention. (Also true)

But I think we attribute brilliance to people way too readily. It was an alright finale. Kind of anticlimactic in the face of most other season finales. Kind of untraditional to bring back an obscure character from early in the season to help fill out 2/3 of the finale episode... but hey.

I'm kind of in the camp that the penultimate episode was way better. This was more like an epilogue.

I agree. I'm the first to heap praise on Vince Gilligan and his crew when it's earned (which is most of the time), but I think the east/west thing is a bit of a stretch in this case.

It was an alright episode, but it tied this season up fairly neatly. It's an airtight season, and they can basically start from scratch next season if they choose to. They could bring in a whole new cast, and only have Mike and Nacho carry over.

I think they pretty much closed the chapter on Kim, Chuck, and Hamlin.

I could see Kim being around in season 2 and I believe Chuck could easily be called back in the next season or later ones.

I will definitely be curious to see where season 2 takes us and if we get Saul at the beginning or end.

I don't think the East/ West thing is a stretch at all. I'll have to watch the ending again because I definitely didn't notice it, but I think it's pretty cool. Still doesn't really change anything for me though. It's nice symbolism, but it's not like the point of Jimmy's new beginning is lost if you didn't pick up on it.

My guess is for season 2, we'll see Jimmy living a double life. He'll be learning the ropes of the criminal world, but trying to keep up appearances for Kim.

I liked the finale. The last two episodes were turning points in Jimmy's professional life. In the end, Chuck's opinion of him meant the most. Chuck saw him only as Slippin' Jimmy, so he didn't think he could be any better than that. This combined with the realization that committing fraudulent crimes could make you a lot more money a lot quicker, and seeing his friend die happily while committing fraud. Jimmy realized who he was and what he wanted to be, a criminal that just happened to be a lawyer.

Was looking forward to seeing more of Marco. I figured Jimmy would end up calling him down to ABQ over the years when a special project came up. Didn't see him out of the picture so quickly but I guess he had to go to advance Jimmy's character development.

I have to fly to PHX Saturday morning to drive my mom home to DFW. I REALLY want to detour through ABQ and see some sites but I know she wouldn't appreciate it.

Just don't throw a pizza on Walter White's roof.

SIAP

I actually drove by there last year and it was pretty awkward. The woman who lives there was just sitting in the driveway with a cooler and a bunch of bottled water. I guess to discourage people from taking pictures.

The car wash was cool though.

I don't know why folks think we won't see Kim or Chuck next season.

Kim was still looking out for Jimmy even in the finale.
I am guessing some interaction with Chuck will happen to have the name change to Saul come about. I don't know that Jimmy realizing he didn't want to be a big firm partner makes him go right to Saul.

I gotta believe there will be a Saul Goodman vs HHM in a lawsuit in the future where Saul is representing someone that is suing a client of HHM.

Great interview with Peter Gould on where the the show is going.
seems like it still might be a slow burn for a while on jimmy becoming Saul.

Oh, and most of these BB references in the finale went past me:

Haven't seen anyone mention the camera angle from the perspective of the dented garage trash can that Saul kicked earlier in the season.

Greatness!

any word on whether season 2 gets a "full" 13 episodes or if they're planning to stay at 10 per season?

From the interview a few posts up:
"...as he, Vince Gilligan and the show's other writers work on the 13-episode second season..."

Overall it was a great first season. Love the Mike story being told as well.

That said, I thought the finale left a bit to be desired and was one of the weaker episodes of the season. I just didn't buy his reason for "breaking bad".

It was less "breaking" bad and more "resuming" bad.

Think about it and it is pretty easy to see the path he chose:

1. He's a hustler
2. He gave legitimacy his best shot
3. Despite his best efforts, he did not gain the respect of his brother or others in the "legit" legal world
4. He hustled his a$$ off and the best he could get was crappy pay for public defender assignments, or $140/pop will work that requires him to degrade himself for clients
5. His gold-mine case gets him $20k and the hope of a payday years down the road after lengthy class-action litigation, appeals, etc.

vs.

Get a huge cash payday for compromise of his ethics (opportunity that came, by the way, as a result of him hustling)

Easy choice.

Anyone else think that the series ends with him having to come out of hiding because he hears about the nursing home settlement on the news from Nebraska?

I thought this. But really, Chuck sent him over the edge. He emulated his brother. His changed his whole life to be like him. And then, after achieving pretty good success as a lawyer, Chuck told him he would always be a con-man and that he would be embarrassed by Jimmy.

To Jimmy, screw this. You want a con-man, I'll give you a con-man.

Even if they were having to wait on appeals and everything, it wouldn't take 10 years to see money from that litigation.

No. He pops his head out and his ass goes to prison. The DEA isn't going anywhere and he knows it
