First episode of the show that I would say was mediocre to bad.
I have to disagree. Its building up-had to set it up for the future and there were some pretty thick plots laid out on this one.

Storyline aside-I am really digging the music and cinematography, especially for this episode. The music during the nursing home scene was hilarious. And Matlock?? Genius. The use of shadows/highlights at his brothers house were fantastic.

It took me a second to get what he was doing watching Matlock and taking notes. So funny.

And ******* it'd be nice if we could go one ****ing episode without some numbnuts on here whining that it was slow. This isn't an action series, people.

Have we determined why Chuck is a "cash cow" for the law firm?

Old people LOVE Matlock so he was studying his "style" so he could mimick it before going to schmooze the old folks.

Awesome episode, those that disagree must have too much electromagnetism around them.

Thought that was a fantastic episode. Guess it's going to be "slow" unless something explodes or people get shot.

Gimme a break guys. I'm one of the biggest fans of BB out there, I'm well aware of Gilligan's style, and I don't expect explosions or action,

That was still an uneventful episode.

Maybe we should start a new thread for the "not enough action" and "too slow" goobers so they don't weigh down this thread with their idiocy.

Dude, relax. It's ok to criticize the show. Nobody bats 1000, not even Breaking Bad did.

Lighten up.

I'm fine with the pace. They have to set the groundwork before the fireworks go off.

Those three consultations were classic Gilligan. And the ending with Mike... You know something big is coming. Good things come to those who wait!

Love the show.

Although they obviously have a ton of pull with AMC. Right now this show is SNAILS!

It's going to lose a ton of viewers before it blows up. AMC knows this.

Not just a new thread, but a new board. Between TWD thread, this thread, and what I can only assume will be in the upcoming Mad Men thread, this place will be full of Debbie Downers.

Every episode has been better than the one before it in my opinion.

I'm thoroughly enjoying his slow build into "Saul Goodman" that each episode is illustrating.

I'm excited to finally get to the real story behind Mike Ehrmantraut. Of all the major characters of BB, I think he had the most mysterious and interesting back stories.

The blond lawyer chick is getting better. I don't know where they're going with this character, and I assume the character is no longer around by the time Walt shows up, but at least she adds some semblance of eye candy and the substance is growing little by little each episode.

With all that said, the crazy-ass brother story line bores me to tears. I don't care about that character at all, and I find none of it interesting. The only thing that will save that story line is if it continues throughout the entire series and we find out that Jimmy/Saul was still dealing with it during the entire series of Breaking Bad and beyond...therefore affecting all of his decisions, including the decision to disappear (and manage a Cinnabon in Ohio).

First episode that had me fully engrossed through the entire episode. The pace appears to be picking up!

This BCS thread just isn't as fun an exchange of show thoughts as the BB season threads were. I don't know, I guess I open this and expect the same discourse and open discussion as on the BB threads and maybe that's an unfair comparison. If I had never seen the BB season threads perhaps this BCS thread would seem OK - just too many expectations on my part.

I trust the Texags Entertainment board though so I'll keep reading.

I am not as euphoric about it as some on this show but I have to admit when the guy asked him if he wanted cash for his retainer and Jimmy was left speechless made me laugh out loud. His facial expression just got to me. It was like the first time he nutted mixed in with seeing what Santa brought you Christmas morning.
------------------------------------------------------- Don't be so gloomy. After all it's not that awful. Like the fella says, in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock. So long Holly.

I'm all for slow burns, but even slow episodes should advance the plot (or the development of the characters) in some meaningful way. This episode was basically Saul speaking with ridiculous potential clients in the first half (the sex toilet was hilarious though, granted), and the second half was the situation with Chuck.

As someone else mentioned, I find the whole Chuck thing boring. That said, it's very possible the episode laid some important groundwork for the next few episodes, but that remains to be seen. Though at least they did clear up that Chuck's "condition" is not really a condition. It does raise the question of if he's faking or if it's linked to Saul somehow.

Most interesting part of the whole episode was Mike in the last couple of minutes, imo.

I didn't see the preview for next episode, but I remember reading that the sixth episode would be a biggie, so things should be picking up.

It was a little bit drawn out. But there was some meat on the bone.

I'm really starting to wonder if his act for his brother is more than just a show for his brother. If he really is trying to convince himself that he's going the straight and narrow and he just is oblivious to his natural tendency to exploit. Or if he's fully aware that he's trying to take advantage every which way he can.

Chuck is keeping Jimmy tethered to the straight and narrow. Ultimately preventing him becoming Slippin' Jimmy full time.
Once Chuck is out of the picture, everybody Better Call Saul.

I think there might be a point where Saul commits Chuck and cashes out. And that will be the point where he's gone full Saul. The Chuck storyline isn't there just for fluff.

I also like how he is always trying to find his "look" He goes for the JMM pin striped, bleached hair etc. He also then tries to look like Matlock. He's dressing for his target audience. Eventually he will dress how he wants to dress, orange shirt and tie, found in one box. He will be who he wants to be and who he wants to represent.

Definitely. It'll be his Walter White moment.

And I'm fairly sure Mike will need legal help with whatever his situation is, and will go to Saul for help. Maybe that'll be his first foray into the "criminal lawyer" world.

I am expecting at some point Chuck will either die or get better and disassociate from Jimmy. If Chuck dies with Jimmy as the beneficiary, HHM has to pay Jimmy for Chuck's interest in the firm. If Chuck gets better, HHM may pressure him to make Jimmy go away and change his name. Either way, Jimmy probably gets money under the stipulation he changes his name.

Yeah, you don't need car chases or explosions for action. The best shows keep you on the edge of your seat mentally-either through comedy or a tight script that constantly has you thinking or analyzing. This show isn't yet doing that, but as I said earlier it's Gilligan's style to lay a lot of groundwork. Makes for better TV later.

If this show had gone straight to Saul representing bad guys and embezzling money, then this show would suck. It's like people want to turn 2001 into Armageddon.

I think he's kinda right about chuck's condition being tied to his behavior. Seems jimmy going clean has made him worse not better though. If he started showing signs 18-24 months ago, I wonder what triggered it.

Exactly. It's Saul's story, not Walter's.

I tried saying that a few pages ago. His problems aren't Walt's problems. His life is completely different.

I know I said it'll be a few episodes before I can't take this thread anymore, but now is probably the time to check out because I'm really enjoying the show, and this thread is 75% nonsense. I think as a show it is much stronger in S1 than BB was. BB was a mess in the early seasons imo.

Credit VG and crew for honing in on their craft through the evolution of BB and becoming stronger showrunners. Obviously BCS gets the benefit of having known characters which helps, but it is just more concentrated and well-made than BB s1.

Y'all enjoy!

I have thoroughly enjoyed this season so far. This show is pretty damn funny, well written and well acted. I laughed out loud several times last night during the episode, and really like how things are unfolding.
