There were some hints to it last night and I'm sure there will be more cameos as the show progresses, but you can probably watch it and be ok. But, BB is one of the best shows that was ever on TV. You really need to watch it on Netflix.

No I don't think so.

There will be little things (like the opening scene and Tuco last night) that you won't pick up on that would add some icing to the cake, but I don't think there will be huge plot lines that you'll miss.

As was posted above, you should watch BB regardless of it's bearing on this show.

I am relieved. For a second, I thought the $26K was going to be money he didn't want to take because it required him to do something dishonest or dirty, and this was going the be story of how Saul "broke bad" and all that.

You can probably get away with it but do yourself a favor and watch BB anyways. Great Show

There were already a couple scenes (opening and ending) that hold much more meaning if you've seen BB.

Yea, I think you will have needed to see Breaking Bad in order to fully enjoy and understand the show. If you haven't seen BB, sure, you can still enjoy this show. But it will just be a show about a random attorney, with other random characters involved. If you don't know what eventually happens to Saul and how the other characters fit in, I feel like you will be missing a ton of context and meaning to what happens in the show. I'm sure it would still be good to someone not seeing BB, but they will be missing out on a ton.

Take last night for example. The reason why it was so entertaining is because in every scene we are comparing Saul to how he was in BB. It's interesting to see that he hasn't hit his stride yet and that he's not as skilled/polished/confident as we know he later becomes. IF we didn't have that context, it would have just been an episode about an attorney who has some weird quirks.

I would definitely binge watch BB soon. Otherwise you will watch BB later, and then realize that you probably need to watch Saul again to catch everything.

I haven't watched the episode yet as I worked last night. How is it so far? Seems like people are excited.
started slow to give a back story but at soon as the Napoleon twins showed up it hit its stride to the finish. Cant wait for tonight

This for me. The wife had almost completely checked out and I had gotten pretty bored with it, too. Then he had the sit down and laid out the plan for the Napoleon twins and all was well!

I actually thought he was going to shake down the partner guy at Hamlin & McGill. I assume the guy is Hamlin. Then he goes after that Robyn chick.

Overall, it was interesting. A little slower than I expected. But then, Breaking Bad was rarely just action.

Saul is such an awesome character . . . I like the way he is developing in this first episode.

It's interesting . . . there was a lot of Breaking bad formula in use:

Start with the present for the opening scene, then flashback.
Develop the character. Show his family. Show him as a Charlie Brown down-on-his-luck likeable loser. Show him at his job, in a frustrating manner. Show him surrounded by those with much more (in some ways teh law firm reminded me of that company Walt started and left too soon).

Start to feel his desperation. Show that he really needs money for his family. Even though he appears tame, show him stick someone with quills.

Even tracking down the Napolean brothers was akin to Walt chasing down Jesse to strike up a business partnership. Although the Napolean brothers were more like Badger in terms of intelligence.

And then show it escalating from there - how one small slip of fate changes everything.

A ton of parallels. In a good way.

One of the lawyers from HHM. The one that his brother described as having a promising career that might be gone if he liquidated his shares.

I disagree with everyone saying you should go watch BB before trying to watch this. If you've got the time, sure go do it because Breaking Bad is a great show.

That said, if you don't have time to watch all of those episodes and can afford to pick up a weekly show I say stick with it. I'd watch Gilligan tell just about anyone's story. This is Jimmy's story and I don't think you need Walt/Jesse's story to tell this one (more episodes could prove me wrong). I think the links to Breaking Bad beyond Saul are just bonuses for fans and not needed for the overall story. I believe I read something where Gilligan said as much in an interview a while back.

I think it might be interesting to watch this series with little/no info on Breaking Bad. My only concern would be if there are any spoilers in this series.

For someone that constantly talks about his love for these shows you suck at paying attention to them. Maybe you should watch twice before asking questions or making comments.

This is going to be either a great show or a bad one. There will be no in between. Last night was pretty weak IMO but I am going to stick with it. There were times in Breaking Bad when you thought it was going off the rails but the pay off for sticking with it was worth it. A show like Boardwalk Empire I should have ditched long before it was over. This one I am going to give it a full season.

Ok - I don't know who that girl he was smoking with was either and I THOUGHT I was paying attention.

I mean, I know she was in the conference room earlier, and they certainly SEEMED to know each other, but do we know more than that?
Quinn

No, we don't know more about the girl. It's the first episode, so there will be stuff that we don't know and will learn about later. I would guess she will play a central role in however that plot line gets resolved.

If this was the only time/episode where I've had to read multiple posts about something you didn't pick up I wouldn't have made a comment. I'm not going to go dig up examples, but they are there.

And not sure what you're posts you're referring too, but I just happen to watch shows where you can miss a bit of dialogue and miss some major plot points as a result. (Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones.)

The woman in my question hadn't been established, and still hasn't really, so it was a fair question.

According to a short video called The characters of Better Call Saul on the AMC website the character is Kim Wexler, a lawyer at the big law firm (played by Rhea Seehorn). Apparently she started out in the mail room and her career moved ahead much more quickly than Jimmy/Saul's has.

There was no way to know anything about that character from the smoking in the garage scene last night BES. I'm guessing this is a character that will be developed going forward.

I would agree with you if the entire show was a prequel to BB, IE knowing it was Tuco last night was exciting for people who had seen BB but if you hadn't you still understand the point of the scene. Where i think having seen breaking bad will help will be with the scenes that occur after the events of that series, in order to understand how he got to that point.
COOL LASER FALCON
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I agree. Even if you didn't know who Tuco was, I'm guessing you could infer that he's a pretty bad dude. And I'm sure they're going to show us that as he introduces Saul to the ABQ criminal world.

Seem to remember that a comment was made about Jimmy formerly working in the mail room. They probably came up together and he will be using her for inside info as he battles Hamlin for a settlement.

I'm not gonna watch any of the extra stuff.

From context clues, and the last scene of them, you can at the very least deduce they are/used to be friends based on how he just slouches next to her and grabs her cig out of her mouth. His brother also made a "mail room friends" comment, so could possibly say she used to be that, since you saw her in the boardroom earlier.

That's all I want to know so far.
