Now that I'm finally getting a chance to watch season 2 (though I admittedly haven't caught up completely yet) I don't understand a lot of the changes they are making. I get it if you need to eliminate some characters, or merge a couple down into one, for the sake of brevity in a TV season - these are pretty long books after all.
But some of the changes are completely unnecessary and change not only events later in the story but characters as well. How are we supposed to believe Jon as Lord Commander later if they are still portraying him as immature and bumbling (stumbling into getting caught by the wildlings as opposed to everything he has to go through in the books?). Or Danerys - I haven't seen the episode yet, but apparently she lets her dragons get stolen and then she goes and whines to get them back? C'mon. In the books she has tons of personal doubt, but we believe her as a leader at that young age because she always appears strong in front of her "enemies". And Arya is now having long dialogues with Tywin Lannister and Littlefinger at Harrenhal?
It just seems like the TV show is now making changes just to make them - they've decided that they are going to use this audience they've developed to tell their own story of how they think it should go and what the characters are like. Kinda risky if you ask me considering that I would guess much of the audience is built-in from the books - deviate a lot and risk losing some people who tuned in to see the books come to life, not how Hollywood writers think the story should go. Its good tv, just disappointing.
