Guess Mercedes decided to take the sandbags off during P2.

Watched quali today for F2. Was surprised how low they finished with all the hype behind them. I'm a newb to the lower formulas, trying to watch more when I can. Since you are the resident lower formula enthusiast, how much does the team play a role in driver performance since they use the same cars?

We will see but I will be very surprised if Max isn't way faster in qualifying and race pace.

Oh yeah, no doubt.

But I'm crossing fingers it will at least be competitive.

Mercedes was actually looking good during P1, but they didn't post any Soft tyre run times (best times were on Mediums), so their times looked a bit lower.

If the evidence is verified as legit and there is anything that shows any sort of questionable behavior, Horner is done. And Red Bull will be raked over the coals for the investigation.

The same car/chassis might be true but the engineers matter a ton in lower formula, they find the best setups. Prema is seen as the best team since they tend to dominate. PHM Charouz is seen as the worst.

Prema was terrible in 2022, bounced back in 2023, today was just really bad. IIRC in 2022 a lot of their engineers left to ELMS to work on the LMP2 project and then MP Motorsport poached a lot of good ones as well, MP won the driver's title that year.

Another thing is the engine. They all use Mechachrome and it can be unreliable for drivers sometimes. Fans call it getting "mechachrome'd" when you get a bad unit lol.

Everyone is still holding back. Pole last year was 1:29.708. Sainz did a 1:29.921 in testing.

you should be able to use the READER function on your phone.

Dietrich Mate*****z was a badass. No one in F1 took him seriously - soft drink guy against car guys. then he hired Horner and more importantly Adrian Dewey and now everyone is looking up at them .

"Red Bull soon cracked the formula for the whole sport. It consisted of four essential elements: aerodynamic efficiency, mechanical efficiency, the engine, and the driver. "If you have good aero and two of the other three, you'll have a good package," chief designer Rob Marshall said. "If you have all four, you'll be unbeatable."

Mate*****z's team was sitting on a full house."

It's really Adrian Newey, IMO. McLaren poached him from Williams before 1997. Williams has never been the same, since. Red Bull poached him from McLaren before 2006 and McLaren has never been the same since.

not necessarily, their dominant years they have had one of the top drivers on the grid at the time. Yes Newey makes a great car but to be a great team you need a few things which is all the article was saying.

Jacques Villeneuve and Damon Hill are my counterpoint to that. Good, but not great drivers. Hell, Perez would have won the title last year. A great driver simply maximizes a great car, but there have been plenty of instances of a good driver winning a title in a great car, (Jenson Button).

Time for my once a year post about F1
Since Bahrain starts today....
Race Week is upon us so here is an update to my post from last 3 years.

---------------------------------------------------------
Quick Tutorial for Race Weekend (for those new to F1) - Non-Sprint Weekend

Friday (Day 1)
  • Free Practice 1 and Free Practice 2 - This is a time for teams to test out the cars and all associated operations, and give the driver's time to reacquaint with and get used to the race track and practice doing "hot laps" or full-speed laps. Fastest lap times are recorded and noted for the drivers for each session.

Saturday (Day 2)
  • Free Practice 3 - Final tuneup for the drivers to prepare for qualifying and note any remaining issues with the car. Fastest lap times are recorded and noted for the drivers for each session.
  • Note: FP sessions last 60 minutes.

  • Qualifying - There are three rounds of qualifying (Q1, Q2, Q3) to determine the starting order for the race on Sunday.

Q1 - (18 minutes) All 20 drivers attempt to post their fastest hot lap. Top 15 drivers advance to Q2. Bottom 5 drivers are then slotted 16-20 for the race based on fastest lap times in Q1 session.

Q2 - (15 minutes) Top 15 remaining drivers again try to post fastest hot lap. Top 10 drivers advance to Q3. Remaining 5 drivers are then slotted 11-15 for the race based on fastest lap times in Q2 session.

Q3 - (12 minutes) Top 10 remaining drivers slotted 1-10 based on fastest lap times in Q3 session. "Pole position" awarded to fastest lap time posted in Q3 session.

Note: Drivers can attempt as many times as they are able within the time slot to record a fastest lap.

Sunday (Day 3)
Race - Drivers line up on starting grid based on qualifying results (and penalty times if assessed). Drivers perform a warm-up or "formation" lap to get into position. Lights out and race is underway!
  • Points are awarded only to the Top 10 finishers in the race. Points count toward both driver's and constructor's championships. Fastest driver lap time during the race is also awarded a point unless that driver finishes outside the top 10.
  • Points awarded are 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 for Top 10 finishers.
  • Fastest lap time and fastest track sector times are noted during the race.

Note: Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Las Vegas are backed up one day from above
----------------------------
Sprint Weekend Race Rules 2024 (6 Sprint Races in 2024)
----------------------------
Friday - FP1 and Sprint Qualifying take place
  • Sprint Qualifying session determines order of Sprint Race on Saturday.
  • Saturday - Sprint Race and Race Qualifying
  • Sprint Race is roughly 1/3 length of full race, therefore drivers should not have to pit.
  • Points are given for top 8 places (8 to 1).

(Note: If anyone knows of other rule changes that affect this, please provide)

Don't know if this needs to be included in your post but DRS rules changed. It's now available in the race after lap 1. Used to be after 2 laps completed.

With AI who knows if the leaked messages are true or falsified. You would think the only people who could verify their veracity are bound by confidentiality. To be clear, I'm not at all saying they are fake. But you have to at least consider the idea.

Agree. He also cheated on Geri while she was pregnant 10 years ago so we have to consider that as well.

Maybe McLaren doesn't come out of the gate so poorly this season. Just watched episode 2 of DTS. They sucked early on last year but made up a ton of ground late. P3 looked pretty good today.

I thought he did this with his former partner Beverly right after she had their daughter Olivia. He ditched Bev for Spice Girl.

Which is terrible btw.

But yes, either way he has a history of it, and we are also in an era where it would be difficult to believe anything like screenshots of text messages without additional metadata.
