It's the testing track so it's the track the drivers are most familiar with and the one on which they've driven - by far - the most laps in their F1 careers. It's definitely the best known to the drivers and that was the reference being made by the announcer.

I don't think they have caught Ferrari and Red Bull but I think they have probably taken a step up from the midfield teams

This is a higher down force track, so I think that is also helping Mercedes outside of car upgrades.

Feels like their engine manufacturing is really missing the classic Honda (and really all Japanese manufacturing) quality control. Huge black eye for whoever is in charge of the engine team.

They better figure it out asap since Porsche isn't stepping in for a few more years.
