Race Week is upon us so here is an update to my post from last year

Quick Tutorial for Race Weekend (for those new to F1)

Friday
  • Free Practice 1 and Free Practice 2 - This is a time for teams to test out the cars and all associated operations, and give the driver's time to reacquaint with and get used to the race track and practice doing "hot laps" or full-speed laps. Fastest lap times are recorded and noted for the drivers for each session.

Saturday
  • Free Practice 3 - Final tuneup for the drivers to prepare for qualifying and note any remaining issues with the car. Fastest lap times are recorded and noted for the drivers for each session.

Note: FP sessions last 60 minutes.

  • Qualifying - There are three rounds of qualifying (Q1, Q2, Q3) to determine the starting order for the race on Sunday.

Q1 - (18 minutes) All 20 drivers attempt to post their fastest hot lap. Top 15 drivers advance to Q2. Bottom 5 drivers are then slotted 16-20 for the race based on fastest lap times in Q1 session.

Q2 - (15 minutes) Top 15 remaining drivers again try to post fastest hot lap. Top 10 drivers advance to Q3. Remaining 5 drivers are then slotted 11-15 for the race based on fastest lap times in Q2 session.

Q3 - (12 minutes) Top 10 remaining drivers slotted 1-10 based on fastest lap times in Q3 session. "Pole position" awarded to fastest lap time posted in Q3 session.

Note: Drivers can attempt as many times as they are able within the time slot to record a fastest lap.

Update: The Q2 tyre rule has been removed for the 2022 season. Drivers may choose whichever tyre they want to start a race.

Sunday
Race - Drivers line up on starting grid based on qualifying results (and penalty times if assessed). Drivers perform a warm-up or "formation" lap to get into position. Lights out and race is underway!
  • Points are awarded only to the Top 10 finishers in the race. Points count toward both driver's and constructor's championships. Fastest driver lap time during the race is also awarded a point unless that driver finishes outside the top 10.
  • Points awarded are 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 for Top 10 finishers.
  • Fastest lap time and fastest track sector times are noted during the race.

Sprint Race Rules
Friday - FP1 and Qualifying take place
  • Qualifying session determines order of Sprint Race on Saturday.
  • Update: In 2022, top qualifier on Friday will earn a statistical Pole Position, regardless of Sprint Race results
  • Saturday - FP2 and Sprint Race
  • Sprint Race is roughly 1/3 length of full race, therefore drivers should not have to pit. Sprint Race results determine order of drivers for Sunday race.
  • Update: In 2022, points will be given for top 8 places (8 to 1).

I opted out from watching DTS after Season 3, good to see they haven't changed

So far, I would say season 4 is the worst season. They definitely appear to mix and match voice recordings and unrelated scenes in order to drum up drama.

But I still find it an enjoyable watch. The Tsunoda part was cool, even being clearly over blown.

have not yet watched this season. but, season 3 the fake racing commentary was over the top in places. seems they are doubling down.

I enjoyed Season 1 a lot, as I felt it was a true behind the scenes of F1. It was a good treat especially after F1 stopped showing fans some good footage for free, like the driver's briefs they would upload on Youtube. S2 was great as well. S3 is when they kind of created that drama to spice things up and make viewers feel like they have to choose a side or choose a favorite driver based on a TV show.

With season 1, the drama was all on the track. Now in season 4, the drama is all off the track.

But 2021 was a boring season outside of what, four races? Silverstone, Abu Dabi, Monza, and…Austria? I'll probably be flamed, but there wasn't a whole lot of competition as teams prepared for 2022.

Hard for Netflix to put lipstick on a pig.

The championship literally came down to the last lap of the entire season and that's somehow a boring uncompetitive season?

I'd add to your list Brazil for sure, Hamilton had an absolutely insane weekend. Baku had the blown tire controversy with Stroll and Verstappen and the red flag restart with Hamilton screwing up giving Checo the win. Hungary had the huge crash to start and ended with Alonso defending Hamilton for multiple laps to help Ocon win. Williams found a way to break through with Russell and Latifi each scoring points in multiple races.

I'm sorry but I'm flaming away, last year was very entertaining.

The only point I'd throw out as boring was the middle of the pack season put on by Aston Martin but that was pretty much expected after the FIA made the Mercedes teams rework the underbody of the cars before the 2021 season.

2021 boring!? It was the closest we got to 2012. All it needed was 3 teams fighting for the top rather than 2

2013 and 2015, now those years sucked.

I agree with everything you said about the championship being exciting.

But from Netflix's perspective, who've made the first two seasons on primarily the midfield teams, there wasn't a whole lot of competition for teams 5 through 10.

I fully embrace the minority position here.

Ngl, the only midfield battle that kept me entertained was Vettel vs Alonso for the Overtakes trophy :P

Lots of drama in Azerbaijan too with the tire failures and Lewis running off the track at the restart. I guess DTS did show like a 2 second clip of Lewis running off the track with zero context..

I thought Brazil was fun until it was clear that Lewis was past ludicrous speed and into plaid.

But Netflix, for better or worse, isn't zooming in on the top two drivers or teams for a full season. Instead, they look to the midfield teams to tell the "untold" storylines, like Haas and Alpine. But these midfield teams did not have a ton of fight this year, and Netflix was left to try and create some drama among the smaller teams. 3 teams had zero points for how long? Terrible for Netflix's "underdog" storylines.

I loved last season from a fan's championship view. But in discussing season 4 of Netflix's storyboard, there wasn't a whole lot for them to go after outside of the top teams. Which they choose not to do, for better or worse.

Is there a pre sale code? Somehow I missed their emails even though I've bought tickets for the past 9 years.

I'm in the que though.
