From Eagle staff reports:

Texas A&M senior middle blocker Mallory Talbert was named the team's most valuable player at the Aggies' season-ending team banquet recently. She led the team with a .331 hitting efficiency and had 10 or more kills in eight matches for the Aggies, who went 14-14 overall and 7-11 in Southeastern Conference play for ninth place. Talbert had 287 blocks to rank fifth in school history.

That can't be good for the program.

She is using her Covid year to go for a championship. Good for her. We won't be in the running this season at all no matter how well the new players perform.

It does hurt us as middle was the one position we desperately needed someone.

Really sucks, but I wonder if the recent transfers coming in were due to Talbert leaving or do we now have an extra spot/scholarship we can fill... there has to be a talented Middle out there that sees our roster and knows she can play immediately!

That would not be an extra scholaship available....she was a senior only could have played for Covid year like Conner did

We have a solid recruiting class but i think everyone knows we have retained only one of her HS recruits on the front row more than one year and that being streaky Rush on the RS

The single player you are speaking of is also in the transfer portal. So that number is actually zero.

Camryn Ennis to play final year at Pitt

Not sure what role she will have there but wish her luck,...seems she will be here for three matches in the fall

Also curious as well. They return both of their setters and a good bit of their DS as well. Given her injury plagued career, it is an interesting move by Pitt. What kind of role would be realistic for her?

Serving specialist?

Gonna be an interesting Aggie tourney this season at Reed

I think we all missed it, but the Aggies land another transfer from Syracuse. 6-0 Setter starting the last few years on a decent team. Seems like a solid pick up. Elena Karatasi from Greece

Curious where this pipeline came from.

Apologies if I've missed it, but with all of the transfers (in & out) + Lauren Davis medically retiring (if I saw that right on Instagram)…is there a full roster anywhere for the upcoming season?
Ag4eva95

I am curious of this. I did not know of the Purdue transfer.

5 freshmen
4 transfers
Plus the returners

Going to be a fairly large roster next season

Really hope we can put a strong rotation together. Some added transfers and some quality returners and relented freshman, hopefully the cream rises to the top

Thoughts on this c/o 24 setter?

She's athletic, aggressive, and smart. My concerns are the intangibles. I can see her being a really good libero with her body control and ability to command the court. Kansas has done really well in the Bird days with smaller setters, so i hope she translates to something like their former all American

If she grows a few inches, different story. I see her as: 3 rotation setter, DS/Libero.

Could be.....She is 5'9" but plays bigger than she is being a pretty good blocker as well. Has excellent hands. She runs a 5-1 in club but ran a 6-2 in high school with a sr to allow her to hit. She is a pretty good RS hitter as well.

I saw her a few times when I was coaching club this year. She is just about to be a junior, so lots of room for development. She's a good block for this age group, not sure how big of a block that is for a collegiate freshmen. But you never know! Her timing seems really good and can swing the sets from left to right. With being her size, defense is going to be key.

Interesting pick up given the size of the current setters at 6-1 and up

Sorry if the post was misinterpreted, there is no A&M pickup that I know of on her. I just wanted thoughts on the board on this particular player as we have some very knowledgeable folks such as yourself. I know she is getting some D1 interest but at what programs I am not sure. From what I have seen she can play with anyone in her class at the setter position and makes a relatively unknown club competitive with the top clubs in the state. The few setters that are bigger in this class are not as athletic from what I have seen....which poses the question, what is more important to coaches?
Ag4eva95
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Oh, gotcha! Coming from the collegiate ranks, she is intriguing. She is definitely someone that we would take a look into. She seems like a D1 prospect given her athletic ability. She doesn't seem to have an elite arm, but this is just one highlight video. She is someone I could see earning playtime with attitude and effort. Leadership skills go a long way
Jack Pearson

What do you mean by elite arm? In terms of hitting?
Wicked Good Ag
How long do you want to ignore this user?
She wouldnt hit for TAMU at all

A bit undersized but can make up with good jump timing

We now have three setters on roster and none have set within the program significantly

and I dont know our offensive philosphy after four years under Bird and now with a new setter taking charge maybe a new system will be in place

Our strengths last two years relative to the rest of SEC was setter and middle play....none of that is coming back and while we always need to keep recruiting I am unsure after this coming season what will happen with program

Two major reasons why

1. Bird on last year of contract and we have seen AD on this situation

2. Not many if any Bird HS recruits have stayed with the program including DS for the most part

Also have to take into account she has a few years to develop. I don't think he was asking in regard to A&M potential, just overall potential and where she fits into the collegiate picture
Jack Pearson
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Well obviously she would love to play at A&M and feels like she has the skills to play at a Big Division 1 Program. I wanted feedback on what exactly development does she need? Outside of being 6'1" it appears she can play at a high level anywhere on the court, has the hands, can get it to anyone on the court, can pass, can dig, can block , can hit so what does she need to develop? Are we just talking height? Texas just ran a 5'7" setter the last 3 years all the way to the championship game and was ranked #1 most of the year.

Last year at A&M camp Camille Connor specifically sought her out and talked to her one on one so obviously she recognized she can play. So is this a skill thing or a straight up size thing. Like others have said I can definitely see her in a hybrid DS/S role if that is an issue
Wicked Good Ag
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Do you want to walk on or be a preferred walk on at TAMU or get a full scholarship at something outside the Top 25. Unless she gains another inch or two she will likely be passed over at top programs which is a shame. As for Jenna Gabriel at Texas she fits that exact mold and who you equated her to is spot on IMO.
That said Gabriel walked on and beat out the other setters on roster. If she wants to do that great. You could likely get her in with TAMU in that capacity and use the transfer portal if it doesn't work and maybe get a full ride somewhere else.

I just don't think that the culture at TAMU is keeping players within the program. Hopefully that changes but we don't keep HS recruits in the program it seems

This is where you have to start evaluating her competition. Can she block, maybe against weaker competition. The girls she's playing don't seem like bangers. It is a highlight reel, so you don't see what she does on plays that they lose. Does she have the mentality needed to be strong when her team is struggling?

Lots to think about. I coached D2 ball and we had girls that looked like her on film. But the most the got were sniffs from small D1 schools. It would surprise you how competitive volleyball has become these days. Intangibles do matter sadly.

Also, they were able to have a 5-7 setter because they had all Americans at other positions. All they needed was somebody to get them the ball. You saw how much she struggled against better teams licking on her, which is why she transferred/lost her spot.
Jack Pearson

Hmm Jenna didn't lose her spot or transfer, she quit volleyball due to "mental health". She literally started for 3 years beating out multiple top prospect taller setters. And Jenna was actually 5-6 which is quite a bit different than even 5-9. As far as attitude , they are very similar and play with a bulldog mentality.

As for the competition, she played 16 Open against the best teams in the country all year. Played the top teams on the tour of Texas . Which one was weak exactly? These are literally some of the tops in the class of 24. Out of the open USAV field going to nationals she played 9 of the teams and arguably the tallest team in the country in Colorado Jrs Sherri who goes 6-4 to 6-5 across the front row. They beat Austin Jrs top team , Tav Houston tops teams, went 3 with Houston Jrs top team,..literally a top 5 ranked Lone Star team all year. Played TAV DAllas tough twice and took Drive Nation to 3. And like you said about Jenna, put this girl on a team loaded like a TAV Dallas and guess what she would look even better. The team she is on now is literally a local team competing and beating some the most selectively recruited clubs in the country. If I'm a coach they certainly should catch my eye as this team has no business beating a team that is double open qualified like AJV.

And to answer your question wicked, I believe she would rather be a preferred at A&M and get a chance to win a spot than play at a small school. She believes she can play with anyone and will prove it if given the opportunity.

My question is, if she had a skyline or TAV jersey on would people think differently? There seems to be a serious case of club bias which won't be an issue for her next year.

I've seen all the top setters in the class of 24 in the state, I'd put her top 3 and with being a better athlete than the top 2 but not having 6" or better height. But she can probably still jump with them both.

On a national scale the only setter i saw all year that caught my eye that was taller and as athletic is the Izzy Staurck girl from the Co jrs team and she is a U19 team USA member.

I know Jenna quit due to mental health

My point was she wasnt a scholie player in the beginning but earned that right....she was setting from what i heard on the other side in 6 on 6 scrimmage stuff in practice and was just doing a better job then starting setter

your daughter could do the same but dont expect a Top 25 program to give a scholie to her at the beginning
based upon height
