I thought Bird would get another year for sure, but now if she loses out and finishes 5-13 in SEC play, I think Bjork is forced to make a move regardless of contract unless he just doesn't care about volleyball. Considering he actively fired a hall of fame women's golf coach only a few years in, I think he would be willing to make a move if there was a really good proven coach interested.

For all the credit Woodward got for the perfect hire in Jimbo, he has now had several clunker hires and this Bird hire has been a huge disappointment considering everyone thought she was the top assistant coach in the country. That's why I like hiring proven championship level coaches and paying whatever it takes to get them here.

So who is a proven championship winning coach that we could realistically get?

Corbelli was making in neighborhood of 150k a yr after 25 yrs. bird close to 500k new hire 4 yrs ago. Forget win loss record that's unbelievable for an unproven assistant. What a slap in the face to corbellis. Can't imagine what Woodward was thinking.
Woodward wasn't thinking anything - ADs don't make hires in non-revenue sports. It is left to either the senior women's administrator or a lower level admin supervising the sport. It's pretty common that there aren't any admin with a clue about volleyball, and since it's not a high profile enough sport to warrant a search firm, they often just call around for recommendations. Bird was though of as the "next big thing" in volleyball at the time and often the admin overcorrects as far as choosing the polar opposite of what they have had, which in this case was a young, fresh and what they thought was a dynamic coach. That's fine if the program has been a total mess, but under the Corbellis it wasn't a mess. It was just a B+ in a department full of A+ programs.

Like I have posted before, Bjork would be wise to lean on former players (and even the Corbellis, who have no beef with him and still care deeply about the program) for this next hire and not just go with the unproven coach du jour.

Either way Bird's gotta go.

I know it's not always about money, but we are paying double what is considered a high P5 head coach salary and a lot of people would love to double their salary and be at a place where they can win a national championship.

We're not going to steal Elliott or anything like that, and this list is a few years old, but just for perspective...

"Senior women's administrator"? That sounds like something that's would have been a thing at the University of Texas in 1978 and have been seen as enlightened at the time but would now been seen as extremely sexist in nature. Woodward was responsible for the hire and made the hire. All decisions like this use a myriad of resources - relationships, paid consultants, unpaid consultants, etc.

Cook at Washington has family ties to aTm. (fianc played for the Aggies, might be wife by now, don't recall)
Or go after the Purdue coach. Maybe he is tired of facing Nebraska, Penn State and Minnesota every year.

It is very sexist, but it's a result of title IX and every single athletic department in the country has an "SWA". The title probably should go the way of "Lady Aggies" and so on, but it is still around.

The SWA is usually responsible for women's sports hires, with the exception of women's basketball. While the title may be sexist, it does ensure that at least one female has a position of authority within the athletic department and that it's not just the "good ole boys" network that it used to be.

Sure, Woodward is responsible for the hire, but I guarantee you the first time he met her or even thought about her for that matter was in her interview and his "hiring" her was merely a formality with him relying wholly on information given to him by others.

I worked in the athletic department many years ago and still have friends there. If you have any doubts as to whether the above is accurate you can ask anyone working in college athletics and they'll give you a similar answer.

So we hired an unproven assistant coach from a totally different region of the country and started her out with a base salary equivalent to two of the most successful tenured coaches in women's volleyball history at Nebraska and Texas . Unbelievable. If we had the program those two men have built at their respective universities our program ,as I'm sure theirs is, would not be termed "non revenue " very long.

Been watching all year from afar this year and the coaches seem to really care about the players. Aggie Players are special people or they wouldn't be here. Each is gifted, committed, and highly capable. With stellar HS, club, USA hp training and prior D1 experience at the highest level. They have already earned my respect and admiration just by representing Aggieland!

Yes, that pretty well sums it up.

The reason why I don't think Woodward had anything to do with the hire (aside from what I posted above) is that it doesn't follow his MO of hiring proven head coaches… which is the correct MO when you are a rich championship in any sport potential school and can hire the best in the business (Blair, Henry, Schloss) for what amounts to chump change in the A&M grand scheme of things.

I agree, it takes a special person to be a D1 athlete. They deserve better than this coach.

Why so much effort here aiming to protect Woodward? He decided on the process whatever it was. The decision was his. He was the decider on the candidate and the salary. It was his responsibility.

It is much more interesting to talk about what is next than theorizing why the former AD might not be held responsible for it.

they did win 25-13 in one set. It's crazy how good or bad they can play in any given set. They have the talent I think to be a mid-pack team. I like the girls on this team but something is not right. Is it coaching, recruiting or just players checked out?

A&M 9 20 25 34 12
LSU 25 25 13 32 15

Got destroyed in the 1st set, actually showed a little competitiveness in the 2nd set. Then when you thought they done they won the 3rd set and then battled like crazy to win the fourth set 34-32. Only to fizzle and lose in the 5th set! Obviously none of the momentum in the 3rd and 4th set carried over to the fifth set! Seems to be a recurring theme here of late. It doesn't look like anything is salvageable in this program and probably best to clean house!

Fair enough.

I think the next coach should be a successful current P5 head coach. I don't think we should leave it up to some advice on who the "next big thing" is. Show me a track record of success.

Any rumors the UH coach might be on the short list? He won titles at Blinn and improved both D1s he has been at since including UH.

Also what about the Rice coach, isnt she an aggie? Rice has been pretty good the last 2-3 years.

UH or Rice would be OK, but I want someone like this:

https://gocards.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/coaches/dani-busboom-kelly/2192

Young, ACC COY, Elite 8 in 2020, currently #1 and undefeated. Making $150k. If you're going to break the bank for someone, make it be someone like this.

Not sure a person who has the number one team in the country wants to come to a almost complete rebuild

Money whip and they will spike her salary

And Volpe loves Rice. Not sure she wanted to leave Rice to follow in her fired coaches footsteps but maybe now you can ask

I'm not sure either. That's why you make the phone call.

I would guess her dream is to coach at Nebraska but that's not going to happen anytime soon, and one thing I am sure about is that a lot of people will leave their jobs for 2 to 3 times the amount they are currently making to do the same job in a nicer place thats cheaper to live in.

If she says no I'm sure there are plenty of similar options without having to hire an unproven assistant.

Had to come back and fight mizzou in that set, but aggies win. Talbert #12 ends it with her twelfth kill. Very Aggie.

So glad the seniors got to go out with two wins at home. Play the war hymn!
