You're right, saying they are not "good" is incorrect and an exaggeration. I don't think they are what they were 2 years ago, I don't think we should be squeaking by them and I don't think it's the type of win that helps our NCAA resume. I am disappointed that we are so sloppy and inefficient.Wicked Good Ag said:
Whoever said Cal Poly isn't a good program doesn't follow VB. That said it was a rough match in terms of level of play. I only caught less than half the match but we won in spite of the serve/pass portion of the game.
Stat wise Conner didn't have her usual offensive gameshe is one of the better offensive setters in the nation. Talbert didn't have a good stat line either but honestly that is more an aberration IMO. Davis did quite well and would have had one of her better stat lines for her career if not for a couple of errors toward the end of the match. It was a good win for the program when certain aspects of the game were not at the level you need. Overcoming mediocre to below average aspects of the game and winning is what will help us down the line. We lost the serve receive game to them with 20 service errors and far less aces and in what I watched we were out of system in serve reception a bit too much but still won. I like the stat lines of the pins overall.
Should take care of Corpus on Monday. Will be good to see Steve Greene back to CS. and I think we need to go 3-0 in our tourney this season. Then a loss to Texas would put us at the 5-1 mark I was hoping for going into conference play.
We used a lot of various DS players last night and therefore didn't have back row attack options which is what each top 25 team has at least one. That 6 rotation outside hitter may not exist in this roster but we need someone who will be an option in back row. Ennis or CC are our best options if not a OH who plays all the way around
Re: Cal Poly, anytime a team has a home winning streak like theirs it means that they have done something right, but UCLA was 13-14 the season that win happened and Hawaii had a 47 RPI. It's not like they compiled that record beating good or great teams week in and week out like we will need to.
Bottom line is that I am not satisfied with losing to Marquette, getting whipped by Hawaii and then sneaking by a 1-3 mid-major, which no matter what they did 2 or 3 years ago is what Cal Poly is today. Like I said we'll see how we look against Houston. Right now we don't look like a team that is going to put together enough wins for an at-large bid, much less challenge for the conference championship.
