Whoever said Cal Poly isn't a good program doesn't follow VB. That said it was a rough match in terms of level of play. I only caught less than half the match but we won in spite of the serve/pass portion of the game.
Stat wise Conner didn't have her usual offensive gameshe is one of the better offensive setters in the nation. Talbert didn't have a good stat line either but honestly that is more an aberration IMO. Davis did quite well and would have had one of her better stat lines for her career if not for a couple of errors toward the end of the match. It was a good win for the program when certain aspects of the game were not at the level you need. Overcoming mediocre to below average aspects of the game and winning is what will help us down the line. We lost the serve receive game to them with 20 service errors and far less aces and in what I watched we were out of system in serve reception a bit too much but still won. I like the stat lines of the pins overall.

Should take care of Corpus on Monday. Will be good to see Steve Greene back to CS. and I think we need to go 3-0 in our tourney this season. Then a loss to Texas would put us at the 5-1 mark I was hoping for going into conference play.

We used a lot of various DS players last night and therefore didn't have back row attack options which is what each top 25 team has at least one. That 6 rotation outside hitter may not exist in this roster but we need someone who will be an option in back row. Ennis or CC are our best options if not a OH who plays all the way around
You're right, saying they are not "good" is incorrect and an exaggeration. I don't think they are what they were 2 years ago, I don't think we should be squeaking by them and I don't think it's the type of win that helps our NCAA resume. I am disappointed that we are so sloppy and inefficient.

Re: Cal Poly, anytime a team has a home winning streak like theirs it means that they have done something right, but UCLA was 13-14 the season that win happened and Hawaii had a 47 RPI. It's not like they compiled that record beating good or great teams week in and week out like we will need to.

Bottom line is that I am not satisfied with losing to Marquette, getting whipped by Hawaii and then sneaking by a 1-3 mid-major, which no matter what they did 2 or 3 years ago is what Cal Poly is today. Like I said we'll see how we look against Houston. Right now we don't look like a team that is going to put together enough wins for an at-large bid, much less challenge for the conference championship.

You put Cal Poly in the SEC and they are not at the bottom, far from it

MIssouri Auburn for sure are worse...likely the Ole Miss and Miss State would be below them as well

they would be on par with say Alabama, Georgia.

So if we went 5 with them and they didnt play well either then what you are saying is we are the bottom of the SEC (which could very well be true in the end)

Kentucky Florida are way ahead of us and LSU has a roster that would scare most teams but they have under performed against competition lately under the current coach

South Carolina has beaten some good teams so far and Arkansas was much improved last year and lets see if that equates to this season.

they had two players not in starting lineup that most who follow the program expected. Two freshman played signiifcantly and this is a team that didnt play at all last year so a bit of competition rust so to speak and we went five with them

so if you believe that they would be in the bottom of the SEC then that is where you should expect us if they played without two players they expected and lost in five to us

I have no idea where we will end up but Cal Poly RPI while early in season is around Houston who we play this weekend

I believe if we continue to play like this we will have a losing record in the SEC and that's not what anyone would hope for in one of the highest paid coaches in the country in year 4 of her tenure.

I put the Kentucky and Florida games as losses and the Auburn and Missouri games as wins

that makes us 4-3 on paper immediately...everyhting else is at slightly favored slightly underdog scenario
with South Carolina coming here at least maybe we can squeak out a quality win there

I would have said Miss State was on paper wins as well but not after last season honestly.

I see this being an up and down season and that concerns me. For every win we had last season we had an loss to like MIss State and I dont see us different this season as last...we have basically the same lineup with different libero although we had someone who could play middle /RS if necessary. Now we have a drop off in the middle and one back up on the pins. I thought we could have won one or two more matches with a healthy Morgan on the OH but you have to plug and go from injuries.

60 % of our missed serves were DS players and another 25% came from Conner which is an abberation honestly

I completely agree with this assessment. I think we are underdogs to Texas State and potentially Houston. With the way we have played, I don't think there are any guaranteed wins. We were out of system over 75% of the time in all 4 matches, that does not equate to wins. If our libero continues to pass at this rate, it does not look promising. Maybe a return trip home and some structure will help. I am not optimistic about the season outlook right now.

We fired the Corbellis because the program was stagnant at the NCAA first and second round. But we were a top 25 team. We wanted top 10. I don't have a problem with that. Although the program to me was in good hands we just had to get that elite stud to complete the team and move us forward. We were getting one of those every other year IMO. Aiple and Hans come to mind. The others were fringe top 100 and some did well and some Ok but no one really hit the stud mark that you need while to Texas program was bringing in two to three top 10 players every year.

So we hired someone who could recruit.

Did you know that Rush I think is the highest rated player we have gotten out of HS in the last 15 years??
That was a Bird recruit. Gomez was a great transfer pick up. Morgan could be that with more consistency and making her a 6 rotation outside.

But we have dropped off considerably from what we're we under the Corbellis and I don't think anyone expected that.

Their last year was hard because we played the toughest schedule in the nation even being in the SEC and we had lost all all American setter to retirement and another who barely made it through game days. The 10-15 record she had her final year wasn't as bad as it sounds and yet if a few games go that way of losses we could be at the level this season. It may very well depend on this tourney next weekend.

I bet if the Corbellis stayed we keep Wenenas and she doesn't go to Minnesota and we have the 6 rotation outside we needed to fill Hans role immediately.

I have been on record that each DS we have is capable of being a player who gets playing time. But none have been consistent. If they can't be develop the 6 rotation outside who can hit from back row. Of all the players on roster one DS type that could swing from back row effectively is CC but she isn't getting in the match. Hans did it well for us. So did Kelsey Black years ago. But no one on this roster is that way

Excellent post.

I agree with all of that. Bottom line is that you really never know what you're getting when you hire an assistant without head coaching experience, and Kuhn might be a great head coach in the future but she wasn't ready for what it takes to succeed at this level.

Cal Poly got smoked by Utah and San Diego this weekend. Both very good teams (particularly Utah) but San Diego lost (3-0) to Texas to open the season, so just more evidence that Cal Poly is not what they were.

UH is 6-0 after sweeping the competition at their home tournament this weekend (including a win over Miss St). They haven't played anyone great, but I predict they will give us all that we can handle on Friday. That would be a good one to show up and support the team vocally on.

Why are the only masks in the arena on the bench - players and coaches? Is this still a NCAA mandate?

I don't see another mask in the arena from the scorer's table to game officials to fans sitting both court side and higher up.

Just a strange visual.

Aggies wins set 1 25-22.

Instrumental in the comeback were Destiny Cox with a huge 1st set and Taylor Voss on serve.

It looks like Lauren Davis is out today.

We looked Rusty to start the match getting down pretty bad. We were able to claw back and take set one after a solid run on the service line from DS Taylor Voss. We have the ability to minimize our errors after that initial run of points by TAMU-CC

The three players that stepped up this match and going forward hopefully could produce results like today were Austin Roark who had number plus kills without an error and also four aces from the service line. Taylor Voss played like we need from a DS night in night out
Destiny Cox started today on the outside with Lauren Davis out ( unsure why but my guess was Covid protocol since she played well against Cal Poly and wasn't injured and she wasn't on bench today it seems. Destiny had a huge amount of kills without a hitting error. Morgan had an off night and was replaced with CC Hecht halfway through that match.

This weekend Houston will give us a tough test for sure. UTSA could if we don't take care of defense side and pass better

We did what was expected of us after the horrid start to the match. We won't be able to get in a hole like that against most of the SEC teams and expect to win.

That said we were much more efficient hitting wise then we were most of the season so far and made smarter plays out of system. Didn't have as many miscues from service line. All of these things are good going forward.

Hope to go 3-0 over the weekend but to do so we need a solid game against Houston on Friday at 6pm

If they can't find it in themselves to support our flag and anthem,( the thing that actually affords them the opportunity to play a game and get a great education) then I can't find it in me to support them in any way. Which is a shame because it's something we have loved for many years.

Can't believe you all won't support fellow Aggies over political reasons. It's seems to be really sad and immature of you. Our girls bust their butts everyday to represent Texas A&M and the 12th man. You all want them to keep politics out of sports, why can't you all??? You have rights, so do they?! If you're not gonna support them, fine more room for the fans who actually care about our girls and our school!

If they use a game to make a statement I'll do the same by walking out of the game.

How is that unfair or unjust?

Wait till tu joins the SEC next year with OU and you can add a couple more losses to the conference schedule. I can't see this team any better than .500 which is sad considering what this coach is getting paid. It's a joke. She is out of her league. (not all assistants make good head coaches). If we were going to money whip someone, why not someone with experience and a proven track record? This fiasco is on Scott Woodward. I'm guessing he tries to show everyone how tough he is and fires Fran at lsu this year if they don't turn things around.

Odd as it may sound, some things supersede even sports fandom.
