So if I put an order in at HEB for just toilet paper (like one package or whatever the reasonable limit is) - would it get fulfilled within like 2-3 weeks? I am not at critical supply stage but planning ahead and want to avoid having to actually search with urgency later.
toilet paper is pretty much full in stock now. As far as how far out depends on the store. Newer stores will have more slots because they were built with curbside as opposed to having them added on so they have a much higher capacity for orders per day. Also yes they are filled right before pickup time. I just realized I responded inside the quote lol. Oh well.

My understanding is that it is filled an hour or so before your appointment time.

We have 2 freezers, and I'm considering making a run on meat given the recent news.

Do the stores anticipate disruptions to the supply claims, especially for pork?
I haven't heard anything but I can ask around and get a better answer for ya.

My store just got in a few pallets of Clorox wipes last night. The good news is that toilet paper is almost back to normal. People aren't panic buying anymore so our supply is slowly getting back to normal. Thanks to vendors like distilleries we are also getting in a lot of hand sanitizer. It will honestly probably take over a year to start getting in all the different varieties of things that ppl are used to buying simply because the manufacturers are focusing on producing more bulk of their popular flavors. It's no telling how long, if ever, they bring some varieties back.

Also, in case anyone is wondering, everyone inside the stores must wear a facemask. My store had a covid positive partner almost a month ago and the extreme precautions we take were very reassuring that heb is handling everything as well as could be. Also, in exciting news for us the yellow coupons made their debut again today!!!
Atag, in my area in Kroger/Smith's stores we are seeing very peculiar shortages of British blend black tea (Kroger brand). Are you seeing anything bizarre like this in your area?

Yes there are a lot of shortages of things for various reasons. Some things are non essential such as fresh cut flowers so the vendors just arent making them. Some of the biggest reasons though is that manufacturers are only focusing on their top sellers and not even producing some of their varieties. In fact, slowly we are redoing all of our aisles, taking out the flavors that wont be produced for long period of time and expanding the shelf capacity of the higher sellers.

Wish my store could get some of that hand sanitizer. I haven't seen any in over a month.
we have been getting it in regularly actually! Its just coming from random vendors such as distilleries or bath bomb vendors so its probably on a random display. If you go to the store the best person to ask for would be a cosmetic partner as they are in charge of that commodity.

still pretty rough. We probably get in only about 2 or 3 cases a week total and it's gone usually within 10 minutes.

I'm gonna ask around in regards to future shortages. It's a good question. I'm only in charge of drugstore/general merchandise so most of my info is around that type thing but I'll get back to yall tomorrow on what I know. One of the guys in my dnd group is a meat inspector for heb so he will probably have a good idea.

Do you have any knowledge of how the online ordering system works? I'd love to pick up a few of the offerings from restaurants such as Underbelly that HEB is carrying at Houston stores, but I can't go into a store right now. I can't find them listed for online ordering. Is that just because the inventory can vary too much to be listed, or because it's from an outside source, or what? Just curious.
that is only at select stores unfortunately. Pretty much every store should have some meal simple though.

Thanks. I've found the Meal Simple things online. I do know that the stores closest to me carry those things, they just don't show up for online ordering for even the stores that do carry them. I figured it was maybe because they aren't system-wide, but I have found certain products (not these type of things, just in general) available to order from some locations but not others.

Okay after speaking to a few different people my understanding is that meat supply is similar to the toilet paper situation. The supply should be fine unless people panic hoard it.....hence the limit. Here's a direct quote from my heb meat inspector friend (just being clear on my source so it's not official or anything)

I don't think it will be major, maybe not what we are used to but I don't think it will take long to recover. It's going to be inconvenient. If people don't panic and start bulk buying then there won't be an issue but they will panic and they will bulk buy so it's gonna be a mess for a little while.

problem is, people are stupid and will panic buy. And b/c people panic buy then everyone else says, "oh sheet, people are panic buying, i better buy everything i can because of those stupid people panic buying."

I hope they put the limits on the meat as soon as they sense a run. Most stores waiting too long on the TP.

I think what will help us in this case is most of the panic buyers freezers are already full of Tony's pizzas and Swanson TV dinners, so they won't have much room.

Can you not institute a surge price/rebate system? During panic rushes the system raises prices to maintain stable inventory. The additional price charged can be rebated in 30-60 days so the consumer doesn't ultimately pay more.

If I select a curbside pickup slot that's later in the day/evening, am I less likely to get all my requested items than if I had selected a morning slot?

FYI, for you folks looking to go and do actual in-store shopping, go Sat night. I was at HEB at 7:00 last night and there was at best one person per aisle. 2 "regular" check out lines open, and I only had one guy in front of me. It was great. I've never seen it like that , even before pandemic. I felt like this is what it must be like "in the old days" shopping at 11:00 at night.

depends on the store. Most stores though if you go super early or late it will be pretty dead. I'd prefer to go in the morning because everything is freshly stocked and neat and tidy. By the evening the store is tore up lol.

Thanks for taking the time to answer! After a solid streak of most stuff being in stock online and actually receiving it (or reasonable substitutes) curbside, we've had a bit less luck the last couple times.

Side note, a weird thing we've noticed is that we frequently get a text message saying something was out of stock and no substitute was found, only to find that the item is actually in our bags when we pick up our curbside order shortly afterward.

The pickers are supposed to ask us dept heads if they are shorting something. Sometimes they will short it then ask us and it will be on a secondary display or just have come in on a truck. That's probably a good sign that the store you ordered from has a solid follow up process on shorts and subs.

Do all stores stock at the same time? Our store in stocks in the morning and it's a complete pain in the are dodging other customers as well as stockers and their carts/boxes/trash all while trying to maintain social distancing. I wish they'd stock overnight.

it should be done overnight. There are some issues right now though because its impossible to tell how big trucks will be because inventory is sooo hit or miss and also we have issues with trucks being late etc. They should be done though by 7 regardless. Could be bad management...could be shorthanded if multiple ppl get sick at once.

HEB posted that a partner in a store near me tested positive. The Karens are freaking out, but big props to HEB for letting that go out to the public. It won't matter one bit if you wash your dang hands.

The local WalMart had one employee test positive, and never said a thing.
