Not to change the subject but I just went to Fiesta about 1.5 miles from my house in Cypress and got everything I needed minus TP - rotisserie chicken, still about 50% of their bread and milk supplies, lots of seafood at the butcher. Going to stores that don't have the typical massive business of HEB is a great way to get what you need without resorting to panic.

I'm not really being serious, but I would like to see a Global Entry type program for a special self-checkout section. You would have to prove yourself as a non-idiot on the self-checkout systems in order to gain this credential, which would then qualify you to use the special, efficient, non-idiot self-checkout line. Watching old folks and mouth breathers slow down the entire process drives me crazy.

My H-E-B uses H-E-B Go, which is an app where you scan and bag as you go. I can't believe more people don't use it.

Saw an idea on Facebook and thought it might be worth mentioning here. Any thoughts on having special hours for the elderly? Like they could come at 8 when the stores are stocked and the rest of us more able bodied can come at 9? Would allow them to shop in lower crowds and without having to dodge kids and other carriers and have a higher likelihood of getting what they need?

As someone who is 71, I think that is an EXCELLENT idea.

Just throwing this out there, but as long as the imposed rules permit, I'm in Carrollton right outside of Dallas, and I'd be happy to go pick up groceries for anyone in a high risk group in my area.

heb is partnered with favor. One issue is that they dont deliver everywhere. Favor doesnt deliver to our house. We are in far north conroe.

Could they not designate a couple of central pick-up points where people further out could come in and meet their delivery truck without having to risk the crowds in the store?

I saw someone post about going to Randall's earlier after HEB has been getting so much coverage. They didn't have tp and paper towels but I was able to get most other things. The only thing I didn't find was a whole chicken that I was gonna use tomorrow night but that's hardly a necessity. I think HEB is taking the brunt of the madness because of who they are.

I meant to post earlier, but I forgot.

I got eggs and several other items my mom wanted.

They were restocking the shelves still at 3ish and the had three pallets they were unloading on the pet aisles. They also unloaded 3 pallets of toliet paper and paper towels while I was there. Yes some shelves were empty, but the majority had stock. The only place that was really decimated were frozen foods and the chips.

The only thing they didn't have but I am sure they will get more of us flour. I wanted to bake cookies, but I didn't want to use the last of the flour.

They seemed to have gotten a handle on things today and I think all the registers were open!

Today was significantly slower. Definitely gives some hope of maybe the panic dying down after the initial shock once they canceled rodeo.

I went back to HEB this morning to get vegetables and fruit. I got there at 7:50 and there was a line, it seemed about the same to me in Austin.

While I was there, i was coughed on. And there were atleast 2 other people there coughing. IMO, HEB should start restricting entrance to their stores. People cannot be trusted to do basic things like dont go to the store when youre ****ing sick and coughing

Wish I knew when it would return to normal. I am in good shape except for corn tortillas and dog food. I live about 40 minutes from an HEB (Burleson is the closest) and would drive there just to shop if they would do an elderly hour. I am 71. Kroger does nut usually have checker when they first open and I DO NOT self check. It is a matter of principle to help those who need jobs as checkers and sackers. I will do curbside but they are not great at Kroger about finding things. They will say they don't have them but I park and go into the store and it is right there on the shelf. I have also tried home delivery but it gets expensive. Ours at kroger is through a secondary source also. I get charge a fee and then the tip runs things up another 20 percent. Even when you pre tip the person seems to always expect another five or ten in cash.

But the concept of an opening time just for those of us at high risk would be wonderful.

I love the idea of an elderly hour too tbh. I will add one thing though, the self checkout doesnt cut our hours. My last store added a self checkout last year and their hourly budget remained the same. Instead of opening with 2 checkers we would open with 1 checker and one assisting sco. When we are busy we would have two partners there to assist as opposed to two cashiers where those partners could assist 8 customers at once as opposed to two. The biggest impact that sco had was to eliminate customers wait times. It's also great for partners who dont want to wait in line on their lunch break.

I dont mind standing in line half an hour to deal with a person rather than a machine. When stores start giving me a discount for checking and sacking, then I might do it. I love that the HEB in Burleson, even though mega busy in normal times has shorter lines than the kroger near me where it is lucky to find even two check liens open.

Your 'discount' for self checking is in time saved.

ours is very limited. It's for partners only and the qr code is in the break room in the back of the store so if I'm not going that way I'll use sco instead. Also the go app for us is a 5 item and 20 dollar max. The best thing about it though is being able to buy stuff overnight when the registers aren't open.

Everybody is different. I love self check. I also prefer to bag my own groceries and will jump in and start if there isn't a bagger there. If there is a bagger and they actually put the stuff in the way I sort it to be scanned they are my new best friend.

that is so appreciated and helps things move along for the next person too. Especially if you are at an Express register with more than 15 items.

each is different. As long as my bread is not crushed, my cold things are together and my eggs are not broken i don't care how they throw it in the bag

I also just buy groc.ieries once a month (from growing up in ranch country where the nearest store was 35 miles away. So I have a very full basket. I almost never buy anything in between.

That is why doing my shopping a week ago and NOT being able to get my usual things is huge to me.

When I go in the store early on the first Sat morning after teacher pay day, I usually take the biggest part of the morning. This time I did curbside and there was a full page of items not available. (Since I live in Kroger country, I use their app and my shopping cart if pretty much the same from month to month.)

About every three months I drive to Burleson to do the monthly shopping at HEB. Used the last two pods of their coffee that I crave yesterday. Coffee is a food group to me, and creamers are the second group. My next HEB month is April but if stores are bare not worth the trip.

When it is an HEB month it also takes a full morning and I stock up on all their fantastic store brand and Texas products I can't get anywhere else. But I never make extra trips after that once a month.

I have never been able to figure out the HEB site to order by mail. Wish it was user friendly cause I would order all my coffee from them. Usually over 100 a month.

At my HEB is it for everything. So I can scan as I bag. Once I'm done, I stroll to the special checkout computer, scan a QR code, scan any coupons, and I'm walking out the door. Even when it's slow, it's probably 3 minutes. For $100+ of groceries. So awesome.

Oh! And the new My HEB app is great. It lets you clip digital coupons and then gives you one barcode to scan to activate all the coupons at checkout. So cool.

Y'all are doing some really great stuff with technology.

People are going to cough. Get over it.

Should HEB partners, who are not trained medical staff, determine who can and cannot go into the store? Or should they hire medical professionals to screen people as they enter?

Then your milk would cost $14.88 a gallon.

GREAT idea.

I took your advice and showed up early this morning. The only items I couldn't get were green beans, ground beef, and bread. I was in and out in 25 min.

I asked one of the guys and he said they weren't putting things like fresh green beans out since people just reach in and grab handfuls out of a common box and they were worried about germs spreading. It makes sense but I don't understand why they have thins like apples sitting out if that is the logic.

He said to expect a bread shortage for about a week since the stores place their orders a 1-2 weeks in advance and will need to adjust their quantities.

Overall, not a bad experience, and I appreciate your response yesterday. The parking lot was FILTHY... I was literally pushing my cart over 10s of discarded purell wipes.

In the Boerne area this morning the line at Leon Springs HEB was wrapped around the outside; they were only letting 20 people in at a time.

That doesn't have anything to do with being public vs. private company. It's just a well run company.

I'm not sure about the opening store earlier for at risk folks. That seems like a disaster to really implement effectively.

Are the baggers at HEB trained to not stay at one check out line even though multiple people are in line? I have noticed baggers finish bagging for one customer and then dart off while the next customers groceries are moving to the bagging area.
