Wraparound porches are a passive cooling feature by avoiding direct sunlight aka infrared radiation on windows. Awnings / shutters are another choice. I expect a greater emphasis on passive cooling in new house building in the future. Not sure porches will be in those designs but one can hope?

Baldwin-Brundrett House

Aransas County Judge W.H. Baldwin, who promoted Rockport as a deep water port, lived in this house in the 1890s. George A. Brundrett, Jr., was a Confederate veteran and cattle rancher on 15,000 acres on Matagorda Island; his family lived here from 1917-1942. Brundrett's second wife, Flavilla, often turned the parlor into a makeshift hospital, and it is said that 200 people took shelter here during the 1919 hurricane. This one-story house retains its basic design from the 1880s and exemplifies the Queen Anne style adapted to the Texas coast. The house has a front facing gable, hip roof, lace-like corner brackets, and its original windows and doors. The only modification has been the enclosure of the back porch.

That's a Beatiful building in such a Texas Historical Place.

"Remember Goliad!"
Massacre at Goliad
March 27th, 1836, Palm Sunday
Mexican Forces Colonel Portilla executed around 450 Texas soldiers on Bexar Road in a ravine. Texian soldiers were placed beween two lines of soldiers and ordered to look down at the ground, but Colonel Jack Fannin told them they would not look down or away. He told Portilla and the Mexican firing squad that they would have to "Look Real Men in Their Eyes as They Take Our Lives!" They shot them and left them in the Ravine to die.
Later, the quintessential Texas Ranger, Capt John "Jack" Coffee Hays, was sent on his first military assignment by President Sam Houston, to bury the dead at Goliad. An image and memory that he said he would "Never Forget!"
Tough times made Real Men; it made Legends!

Right behind this courthouse, in the old jail building, is the Gonzales County Jail Museum. Which my parents took me to...when I was eight...in the middle of a huge thunderstorm... It was so dark inside that I didn't notice the gallows in the corner until a lightning flash came through the windows. It left an impression.

Highway 87 isn't contiguous. The road washed out numerous times before the State decided not to rebuild it (late 1980s, IIRC) around the Chambers/Jefferson County line and up the coast.
