Been lurking over the months when time was available between living life. Holidays provided some solid hours to walk through all the posts reading all the highway logistics, home descriptions and courthouse opinions. Boy there are some ugly boxes among the the "modern" ones. Also amazing that we have counties with only 4,000-5,000 residents yet they operate a county government. Somewhat surprising there has not been a push for consolidation among some of them.

Thank you to all you posting the content: ensign-beedrill, dabo man and aggiewilliford.

Thankful the abomination of the final half of the football season is over. Buzzmen cleanse our pallets and keep the good play up with a strong lead into the boys of spring/summer.

Starts as Boca Chica then gets several name changes as 4 joins and 48 turns northeast:

International Blvd (4 before joining is also called this…it really is an extension of 4 after turning NE)
E 14th St
S. Padre Island Highway
Padre Island Blvd
Brownsville-Port Isabel Highway (till ending at TX-100 at Port Isabel)

What I hadn't grasped is how long Padre Island is. I had a mental picture of "near Corpus (which I've been to exactly once flying in from Love…)

Growing up in Corpus Christi, I can assure you that I still didn't really have a great mental image of just how long Padre Island really is for quite a long time.

I'm adding an image/map for those who are more curious.

And I love your description of Old Hwy 48 and the many name changes as the road meanders towards SPID.

The Johann Joseph Knopp House
Fredericksburg, Texas

Built of native stone in 1871, soon after Knopp and his wife Katherina (Stein) came to America. From Germany they traveled six weeks by clipper ship to Indianola and by oxcart to Fredericksburg. They bought this homesite for $70 in gold. Knopp was a stonemason; family farm, a mile from this home, was worked by the wife and children. (Of the 15 children born to the Knopps, nine reached adulthood.) House, restored in 1939, was extensively remodeled in 1968.
Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1971

In 1939, Fredericksburg's Historical Preservation era was opened when Architect Albert Keidel restored this house. Later (1968) remodeling was done by Mrs. Marschall D. Altgelt.

This one is near and dear to my heart as it was the last turnoff I made to get to College Station from San Antonio. When I got on this road, I knew I was almost there. I get a similar feeling now, knowing we're nearing the end of our journey.

You can see RELLIS campus in this picture.

Walter-Jenschke Sunday House
Fredericksburg, Texas

Built about 1870, this residence was purchased by Johann Walter in 1871. Walter, who served as sheriff of Gillespie County from 1874 to 1888, lived here with his family until his death in 1897. In 1901 Walter's widow, Maria, sold the house to Robert Jenschke, a farmer from Luckenbach. The Jenschke family used the home as a Sunday House until 1923. Representative of typical vernacular German house types, the house features a cross-gabled roof and a three-bay front porch with turned posts, jigsawn frieze, and spindlework brackets.
Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1991

Vogel Sunday House
Fredericksburg, Texas

In the 1880s German immigrant Christian Vogel (1824-1889) built the left half of this structure to house his family while in town for Saturday trading and Sunday church services. His son Amandus (1854-1898) and daughter-in-law Elizabeth (Weber) (1857-1944) added the right half and covered it with pressed tin at the turn of the century. It was used as a Sunday House by Elizabeth until her death and remained in the family until 1947.
