Victoria businessman, mayor and state legislator Benjamin F. Williams (1846-1916) built this home for his family in 1909. Designed by local architect Jules Leffland, the Classical Revival home features two-story front Ionic columns complemented by a side gable pedimented portico with matching one-story columns. Also of note are the distinctive balustrade on the balcony and the "widow's walk" from which the Guadalupe River may be viewed.
Erected 1987 by Texas Historical Commission. (Marker Number 6581.)

The Levi-Welder home, 403 N. Main St. in Victoria is a tribute to that. Built in 1865, the home in downtown Victoria is a living tribute to the early settlers of Victoria.
It has survived hurricanes, droughts, the Great Depression and a series of smaller recessions.
The house has a long history. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
The house was built around 1865 by Abraham Levi, an Alsatian immigrant who founded A. Levi & Co., a wholesale grocery, and the A. Levi & Co. Bank (later Victoria Bank & Trust), according to the national register entry.
It was used as headquarters for federal troops during Reconstruction after the Civil War.
The Levi family owned the home until 1910 when it was purchased by Mary O'Connor Hallinan. The parquet floors and several marble fireplaces were added. Hallinan died the following year, according to the national register entry.
The house was purchased by John J. "Jay" Welder, a prominent rancher, who substantially enlarged the home, adding the neoclassical porch. The Welder family owned the home for many decades.

Located in the heart of Denison, the Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site showcases the home where the 34th U.S. President Dwight David ?Ike? Eisenhower was born in 1890. Antique furnishings fill the modest frame house, illustrating the working-class life of the Eisenhowers.
Eisenhower was born October 14, 1890 in the bedroom of a two-story house in Denison. His father, David Eisenhower, brought his family to Denison from Kansas in 1889 to pursue a new life in Texas working on the railroad.

Sonka House
Seguin, Texas

Czechoslovakian immigrant Joseph Sonka (1849-1924) came to Seguin in 1878. A stonemason by trade, he established a brickyard and cotton gin near this site and in 1881 began construction of this house. He completed it in 1893, the same year he married Annie Klicka (1867-1937). Made of bricks from the Sonka Brickyard, the house is built on an L-plan with Italianate detailing.

It first served as a community hospital in 1913. Today it is a registered Texas Historic Bed & Breakfast located at 617 North Guadalupe Street in Seguin, Texas.

The VarnerHogg Plantation State Historic Site is a historical site operated by the Texas Historical Commission. The site was the home of former Governor of Texas James S. Hogg and his family. The site is located outside West Columbia, in Brazoria County.
The property was originally the home of Martin Varner, one of the Old Three Hundred and a veteran of the Texas Revolution. His was the nineteenth land grant offered in Stephen F. Austin's colony and consisted of over 4,600 acres (1,900 ha). Varner built the property's first house, a log cabin, in 1824. Varner raised corn, cattle and sugar cane on the land, and enslaved at least two people there. Varner may have distilled rum from the sugar cane.
The property was run through a convict lease system through the Texas prison system until the Galveston Hurricane of 1900 knocked down most of the buildings but left the farmhouse intact.[3]

Former Governor Jim Hogg bought the property in 1902. Although the family used it as a second home, Hogg intended to use it as an investment. He was convinced that there was a great deal of oil on the grounds and began drilling soon after the purchase, but he died in 1906, 14 years before oil was found. The 1920 oil strike proved to be the cornerstone of his children's wealth.
The family leased the property for livestock grazing and farming. The Governor's daughter, Ima Hogg, refurbished the house, and in 1958, she donated it to the state to commemorate her father and the heroes of Texas and America. During her renovations, Ima Hogg chose to assign each room of the house to a period of Texas history.

When I was a kid growing up in West Columbia, I used to ride my bike about 3 miles each way, give or take, to and from the Varner Hogg Plantation almost every day in the Summer and tour the house. Good times

Photo taken in Megargel, Texas, where my dad was born (runs through my hometown of Olney, too). 114 was a popular route for Tech students from the northern parts of the metroplex to make the trek out to Lubbock. When Megargel voted to go wet in the 70's, one of the liquor stores put a Double T on its sign. The stretch from Benjamin to Crosbyton is somewhat scenic as you go up and down an up the Caprock.

The Waggoner Mansion or El Castille, as it is sometimes called, is an excellent example of Texas' finest Victorian masonry architecture. Built in 1883 by Dan Waggoner, the house has retained approximately ninety percent of its original craftsmanship and material. This percentage far exceeds most large Victorian homes of this nature that remain in such a good state of repair in Texas, and consequently by all means this home can be classified as being "authentic". Both the exterior and interior walls are of solid poriferous limestone construction.
County. It was home to the Bellah Family until after the death of Mrs. Bellah in 1929 when Mr. Bellah sold it back to the Waggoners. In 1931, W. T. Waggoner restored the home. After the death of W. T. Waggoner in 1934, the house was sold to Mr. and Mrs. Phil Luker in 1942. The moviemakers of the film "Giant" duplicated the exterior for the movie set. Thus, the Waggoner mansion is one of the foremost and striking architectural remains of the indelible marks left by the cattle empire of Victorian Texas.

This Victorian house, with touches of Italianate and Eastlake architecture, was built 18781880 by Harrison Moores Whitaker, a local attorney. The two-story cypress and pine house was constructed on a brick foundation. The first floor consists of the main foyer and living room, one bedroom and bath, plus the kitchen and dining room. Four more bedrooms and two baths are on the second floor. In 1910, ionic columns were added to support the portico. Also added in 1910 was a second-story bedroom with its own separate bathroom, and fronted by a porch. The two-acre parcel of land it sits on once belonged to James Pinckney Henderson, the first governor of Texas. When Whitaker married Mattie, the daughter of Texas Supreme Court justice Micajah H. Bonner, the justice purchased the land as a wedding gift for the newlyweds. Mattie died in 1892. When Mattie's husband remarried in 1903, he relocated to Jefferson County and rented out the house. The house was purchased in 1907 by Anne and Sidney Smith McClendon, the sister and brother-in-law of Mattie Whitaker. White House correspondent Sarah McClendon was born in this house in 1910, the youngest of nine children born to Sidney and Annie McClendon. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places listings in Smith County in 1982, and has been a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark since 1988. The City of Tyler has also listed it as a Tyler Historical Landmark.
