Mrs J.V. Murphy House, Victoria, Texas

Mrs. J.V. Murphy was a businesswoman with vast ranch holdings in the area. She hired architect Jules Leffland to design this house. Jules Leffland, a Dane, trained at the Institute of Technology in Copenhagen. He immigrated to Texas at age 32, arriving in Indianola shortly after the devastating hurricane of 1886. His first projects involved moving homes, piece-by-piece, from that hurricane-wracked port inland to Cuero and Victoria. Leffland became one of the most respected and prolific architects in the Victoria area. Over his career, he designed and supervised the construction of at least 80 structures as far northeast as Wharton and as far southwest as Kingsville. Among his larger works in Victoria were the Nazareth Academy and the Victoria Colored School.

Someone torched the Mason County Courthouse several years ago & they chose to remodel/upgrade instead of bulldozing. I wonder if the construction has been completed?

It is. I came across a picture of the dome being placed back on the new structure. I didn't want to post it without context though.

Here's a picture that I took in a hotel room back in July 2005. I thought of your posts when I came across it this morning.. This was in Ironwood, MI. It's a picture of the bathroom... taken while I was sitting on one of the two queen beds.

I cannot imagine a situation in which anyone would want that curtain open...

I have seen a worse design. They thought they would be cute and put a window in the shower, but did not think about the toilet on other side of shower and had glass doors.

John G Harris House

Dublin is home to many beautiful and historical houses, many of which have stood for the greater part of a century. A large number of these residences have been restored over the years and appear in the same form as the day they were built.
One of the most beautiful old houses remaining in Dublin is the John G. Harris Home, which was built in 1887. Mr. Harris was the founder and first president of the Dublin National Bank. He built this majestic residence for the reported amount of $6000, a large sum of money in the 1880s. Compared to the standards of today, this seems to be a paltry amount given the splendor of this house.

D.L. Harris House
Dublin, Texas

This residence was constructed in 1901 by D. L. Harris, a partner in a Dublin mercantile store, and his wife Claire (Jackson) Harris. The home's design reflects a mixture of architectural styles that were popular at the turn of the century. Notable detailing includes the distinctive gabled roof with ornamental trim, wide veranda and fishscale shingling. Stone for the house's foundation was quarried locally and shaped at this site.

That reminds of the windows at Svante Palm School in Austin that
were so low that rainwater came in and flooded the whole school.
It was an unusual rain event with about 13 inches in two hrs but still,
the windows were poorly designed. There was enough water just coming
in under the doors without leaking windows in the classrooms.
And, of course, the AISD spent all kinds of money putting sandbags
everywhere (after the event was over) and changing the landscape to
cause more run off to go into the neighborhood houses if there is a repeat.
Nothing was done to actually stop the school from flooding IMHO.

Dublin, Texas

The historic Gallagher house that stands on North Grafton Street is one of the oldest houses in Dublin and is a local landmark. It was originally built in 1895 for W.T. Leggett, manager of the Dublin Music Company. T.H. Wilder bought the house in 1904, and began remodeling the house. At this time, he added the classic revival porch and columns that now adorn it. He also made numerous modifications to the interior decorations, including adding parquet floors composed of rare woods lain in various geometric patterns. He enlisted the help of a Native American architect who stayed at the house during the year it was remodeled. After Wilder divorced from his wife in 1913, he sold the house to prominent Dublin storeowner M.D. Gallagher.
