The baseball dreams aren't the only ones like that and I do often wake up thinking "what the heck?" Ha. Usually they're forgotten pretty quickly and I am only left with a feeling of bewilderment.

One of over 200 historical markers on the island, this marker is located at the former residence of J. F. Smith built in 1884.
Designed by Nathaniel Tobey, Jr., and built in 1884 for the family of John Francis Smith, this house is an excellent example of Italianate architecture. Prominent features of the house include paired brackets, a bay window, balcony, and hood moldings over large windows. Smith, who founded the J. S. Smith & Bro. Hardware Company on The Strand, probably ordered much of the woodwork, including doors and windows, from supply catalogs.

George Sealy Mansion
The builder of the house, George Sealy, was an outstanding Galveston businessman in the second half of the 19th century. He accumulated considerable wealth and was associated with numerous Galveston business ventures. If the house was designed by Stanford White, as present research seems to support, then it is the only structure in Texas and possible in this section of the country by that architect. Questions of the designer aside, the building itself is an outstanding design and a notable example of the neo-Renaissance style. It is also representative of the wealth that was concentrated in Galveston in that period of time.

The J. S. Means Ranch House
Built in 1900, this is one of the oldest houses in Andrews County. S. H. Purcell, his wife, and two relatives each filed on a section of public land, building this home where section-corners met, so that each individual could fulfill the legal requirement to live on his claim. Soon after proving their claims, they sold out to Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Means, who then (1904) owned 14 sections. Adding much more land, the Means Family established a very successful working ranch. It continues to run cattle, even though the range has contained oil fields since the 1920s.

It immediately made me think of Houston City Hall. It's like a mini version.
One of my elementary school friends lives in Stamford with her husband. We had been in school together in Lawn in 2nd and 3rd grades. Her dad was chairman terrains when my dad was pastor at Lawn Baptist. First Baptist was a Primitive Baptist Church so they named the SBC church after the town of 369 poo (in the 60s census.)
Roby and Rotan were north of us when Dad pastored in Sweetwater at Trinity Baptist. We had a family in the church that farmed near Roby and their sons were about the same age as my younger brothers so we visited with them fairly often.
Bob Pickett who has been an Austin country radio personality for a couple of decades was in my class at East Ridge Elementary and got his start at KXOX which had a station / transmitter near the parsonage where I used to ride my banana seat Schwinn "off road." Saw my first armadillo near the station.

Home of the superintendent of the mill at Manning, Mr. W. M. Gibbs; good example of architectural style. Nominated to the National Register. The significance is industry and architecture. W. M. Gibbs was succeeded as manager by his son Ernest Gibbs. After the mill burned, he moved to Shawnee Prairie, n. of Manning, to operate a farm and cotton gin. The next owners were Morgan & Ruby Flournoy, who came to Manning in 1929 as teachers at the school. They raised 5 children. The house was also occupied by M. P. Flournoy, educated at Texas A&M, and an engineer at Lufkin Industries. The house is currently unoccupied. It is 1 of only 2 structures extant that represents the town of Manning. Manning was named for Dr. W. W. Manning, the founder of Homer. He established a sawmill at Manning in 1867; he later abandoned the site and established a newer, mechanical mill near Homer.
