Sterne-Hoya House

The home Sterne built on Lanana Creek in 1828 is one of the few structures still standing from pre-revolutionary days in Texas. Today, the Sterne-Hoya House Museum & Library tells the story of the man who built the home with period antiques and furnishings including one of Texas's earliest wine cellars.

Sterne moved to Nacogdoches in 1826. Sterne became a munitions smuggler during the Fredonian Rebellion. He was a financier of the Texas Revolution. When Texas became a state, Sterne served in both houses of the legislature. In 1830, he built the house at 211 S. Lanana.[2] Davy Crockett was a guest in the house for two weeks of 1835. Sam Houston was baptized into the Catholic faith in the parlor of this house, thereby meeting the requirements of the Mexican government to settle in Coahuila y Tejas and own property.
Charles Hoya was a county surveyor in Nacogdoches, operating the Hoya Land Office Building on the downtown square. His father Joseph T. Von der Hoya was a Prussian immigrant. Hoya, his wife Frances, and his father lived in the house at 211 S. Lanana, which the Hoya family purchased in 1866.

We will take a look at the iconic Swiss Avenue Historic Distric in Dallas, Texas

A trolley initially served the neighborhood, running through what is now the alley between Swiss and Gaston Avenues. Originally, Swiss Avenue was composed of two separate streets, one for public thoroughfare and one for private use, separated by a 40-foot park.

Dr. R. W. Baird is credited as being the first to build on Swiss Avenue in 1905 at 5303 Swiss. He constructed a Classical Revival mansion. In 1910 the surge of building along Swiss Avenue began and, of the approximately 200 homes on the street, the majority of them were constructed during the 1910s and the 1920s.

Swiss Avenue was originally named in 1857, well before serious development, by a Dallas resident from Switzerland. It started out as Swiss Boulevard. It was known as White Rock Road shortly after the Civil War when William H. Gaston purchased 400 acres along the road
The Swiss Avenue Historic District, in Old East Dallas, is a diverse neighborhood containing the finest collection of Early 20th Century residential architecture in the entire Southwest. Established in 1905 by real-estate developer, Robert Munger, it was designated in 1973 as the first historic district in the City of Dallas. It is an official Dallas Landmark District and, in 1974, the entire District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The boundaries of The Swiss Avenue Historic District include portions of some of the city's earliest streets:

Beacon Street Bryan Street Bryan Parkway La Vista Drive Live Oak Street Swiss Avenue

The Higginbotham Family Contribution to the History of the Swiss Avenue Historical District:

At one point, there were 8 homes on Swiss Avenue owned by members of the Higginbotham Family, including the magnificent Prairie Style masterpiece pictured above at 5002 Swiss, owned by family patriarch Rufus W. Higginbotham, Sr. and his wife, Hattie Louise Smith Higginbotham. Mr. Higginbotham was co-founder of the Higginbotham Brothers dry-goods chain and was Chairman of the Board of Southwest National Bank, one of the largest banks in the state. During the Crash of 1929, when banks were failing and depositors were withdrawing their savings, Higginbotham publicly announced he was depositing $50,000 of his own money into the bank as an act of faith. As a result, his bank did not fail.

Looks to be a toll road. The State should advertise this to the UGa football players and rake in the $$$. And those boys will be going WELL OVER 85.
