Watch out for the flies if you're at the one on Kemp. That place is always overrun with them.

Texas Historical Marker #188
The Historic Bowers Mansion, Palestine, TX
================================
Built 1878, and located just a stone's throw away from downtown Palestine TX, lies one of the city's most historic and infamous mansions.
This Victorian home and National Texas Historic Landmark has a deep history, with stories of death, murder, and suicide.
Back in the 1950's the then-owner Mr. Bowers, murdered his wife Mary. As the police made their way up the path to enter the home, Mr. Bowers committed suicide. It's believed that their spirits still linger, as well as several others who took their last breath here over the years.

I love that you can see a pumpjack off in the distance. There's two things that define driving through Texas to me: pumpjacks and bluebonnets.

There's your coastal plains. Lots of cotton and maize.
The highway is built up because when a hurricane comes those flat fields can be covered in water.

The house nicknamed "Idle Hours" was built in 1903 by architect Frank T. Smith for L.P. Ogden and his wife Cynthia. Because the house was considered to be out in the country at the time of its construction, Mrs. Ogden preferred to retain her town home and named her new country estate "Idle Hours". The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
