Once much of the country's population lived in county seats that
had the courthouse at one end of Main Street and the High School
at the other end, with the downtown area in between.
Even small towns often featured the school on a high point at the end of Main Street.

San Antonio, Texas (located on the historic River Walk)
Located in Bexar County city of San Antonio in the U.S. state of Texas. Currently operated by C. H. Guenther and Son. Inc., the home was originally built as a private residence in 1859 by Pioneer Flour Mills founder Carl Hilmar Guenther.

Texas Historical Marker 197

The T. A. Hasler House is a Classical Revival-style house located in Bastrop, Texas. The two-story house was renovated from a farm house-style dwelling by Marie Hasler, after the death of her husband T. A. Hasler. The structure was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on December 22, 1978. The home was featured in a Glidden (paints) commercial ("Father & Son" 1991) and in the film Fireflies in the Garden (2008) starring Julia Roberts and Ryan Reynolds.

Not exactly sure. Sometimes the road becomes a part of another highway and is redesignated. Sometimes the road is released to the county or city and is no longer maintained by TxDOT. Sometimes it just vanishes overnight. Sometimes it's wiped from the collective memory.

Renumbering or designating is the reason in just about every case. When we get down to Highway 24, you'll see that it used to run from Paris all the way to Old Glory (Stonewall County, north of Abilene). Most of that route (from Old Glory to Greenville) is now designated as US 380.

The Heard-Craig House is a historic house in McKinney, Texas, U.S.. It was built for Stephen and Lillian Heard in 1900. The house has 7,000 square feet and four floors.[2] In 1970, Kathryn Heard-Craig gifted the house to multiple arts organizations as a place to convene and educate. In addition to an education hub, the center is also a Regional Art Museum boasting a large collection of Texas Regional Art. Notable artists include Frank Earl Klepper, Allie Tenant, Thomas Stell, Guy Wiggins, Bruce Crane, and more.

Located in Bay City, Matagorda County, Texas, the HenlseyGusman House was built by Alexander D. Hensley (18591947), who purchased land at this site in January 1898. With his wife Maggie (18751960), he asked his brother, architect Henry Hensley, to design this house to catch breezes from any direction.
