Oh wow what?

Were we expecting this? Seems a surprise to me. He's only a junior, right?

Wish him well!

Brauny had mentioned earlier on premium that he was looking to sign a free agent deal.

He's played in the Little League World Series and the College World Series. I want to see him in the MLB World Series!

He never applied for his 2021 Covid waiver, so he did not have any eligibility left even if he didn't sign.

Montgomery, Sanford, Prager, Aschenbeck, and Wells are the only remaining unsigned players as far as I can tell.

I'm assuming our only chance is Prager?

I would not expect him back. Only 1 player taken in the first 10 rounds in 2023 did not sign; that's a 99.7% sign rate.

So you're telling me there's a chance...

Here is why it's rarely a good idea to return for your senior year:

The #Angels signed 8th rounder Randy Flores, 9th rounder Derek Clark and 10th rounder Ryan Nicholson each for $1,000.

Slot value for pick 232: $227,700
Slot value for pick 262: $197,500
Slot value for pick 292: $184,700

Their slot value this year is irrelevant as to whether it was a good idea for them to return. You need to figure what they were or would have been offered last year if they had signed versus that 1k plus any NIL deals any may have had. Plus any other reasons they may have had for returning.

It does show the lack of leverage a senior has (or those out of eligibility) but we already knew that. Anyone with a brain already understands why a kid would sign pro after their junior year. I agree with your premise. Ali got a good deal for his situation. So did Jones. And the others. All understandable that they would sign and I think we all agree.

I hope by some miracle Ash gets granted a year so he at least has some leverage. However, I assume he wasn't offered squat after last year so his coming back this year was also understandable.

Also, if Schott has another big year, I could see a team taking a flyer on him next year. He'll get his shot even if he gets no bonus money, regardless of where he is drafted or signs as an undrafted free agent. But he's coming back because they aren't offering anything this year. They could still offer him something like they did Armstrong but doesn't appear to be the case so far.

Fortunate for us cause Schott is a leader as well as a good bat.

You certainly lose all negotiating power your final year of eligibility, but Senior draft positions might not tell the whole story. Many seniors (a) might not have been drafted at all as a Junior, or (b) might have been drafted in the 20th round and offered $1000. So the question becomes, "how important is your draft round to your ego?"

But as you've said, if you're a draftable player as a Junior it's rarely to your financial benefit to go back to school.

Think another big reason for Schott coming back was needing surgery hurt his draft stock. Still had a great year but if he can come back and do even better next year he has a chance to make some decent money. There are a lot of good hitters in college and one that has an unproven knee does not help him

He doesnt have a chance to make decent money without leverage

I think Schott came back because he's loved this team and loves being a college baseball player in general. He has a great future in sports media if he wants it. Next year, he will have no leverage against MLB teams that draft him, as his only choice is to sign if drafted. Thats not even considering his age and he doesn't play a position in the field.

I emphasize all this not to be negative about Schott but to emphasize why he is a top 5 favorite Aggie in my opinion. He wants to be here. He doesn't want his last Aggie memory to be the natty picture sitting against the railing. Him announcing his desire to return before the draft may have cost him a future draft slot

Schott is a great ambassador for A&M and I'm excited to see what he'll do next year (from a baseball view), but he's going to be 25 by next year's draft. He's going to have no leverage next year no matter how good of a year he has (he probably had very little this year). If he wants to try climbing the rungs of major league baseball, he probably won't make much more than a plane ticket.

Judging by some of his interviews, I think Schott is very aware of that. I love the fact that he transferred in and fell in love with this school. Reminds me of Jake Hubenak in a way.

The guy is hilarious, and a great glue for the whole team. Hope his knee is healing up well!

Same. He was my favorite this year amongst a lot of great, high-character guys. Part of it was because his personality reminded me of Benny from The Sandlot.
