Royals select Trevor Werner in the seventh round of the 2023 MLB Draft
From Klein High School to the pros.
On Monday, Texas A&M infielder Trevor Werner was selected in the seventh round, 199th overall in the 2023 MLB Draft by the Kansas City Royals.
Over his four years in Maroon & White, Werner appeared in 125 games as a position player and 11 more as a pitcher.
The cousin of former Aggie infielder Adam Smith, Werner was a highly-regarded two-way player in Rob Childress' 2019 signing class and earned an Opening Day start at shortstop as a true freshman in 2020.
An incredibly "tooled up" prospect, Werner's time in Aggieland was marred by various roadblocks, including a global pandemic that shortened his debut campaign and a broken hamate bone that cost him 28 games during A&M's historic 2022 season.
Still, Werner found a way to be productive during that run to the Men's College World Series, and his 11-pitch war with Texas' Lucas Gordon will long live on in Aggie lore as the two-run single that sparked a 10-2 beatdown of the hated Longhorns in Omaha.
Entering 2023, Werner earned All-SEC second-team honors. This spring, he hit .252 with 14 homers and 52 RBIs in 57 games.
Perhaps his most impressive tool is his arm, as he routinely fires rockets across the diamond from his post at third base.
Through four seasons, Werner sports a .251 average in 431 collegiate at-bats with 21 homers and 97 RBIs.
Despite graduating in December of 2022 and playing four years at Texas A&M, Werner does have another year of eligibility should he choose to reject Kansas City's offer.
Ryan Brauninger's scout of Trevor Werner
"Checks all the boxes from a physical standpoint. Great frame that will continue to add mass and strength. A plus-defender with super high-end arm talent. Enough raw power to give himself a chance in the batter's box. Athletic traits that could open up doors for him at other positions. Consistency has been the biggest issue. Streaky at the plate and will lose feel for the strike zone when going bad. Swing can get disjointed and steep in terms of bat path. Quelled a lot of injury concerns in 2023. High-ceiling player. Plus in terms of character."
