Two more will be entering the portal - bama now two over the limit
Maybe that's the challenge, you need to be cutthroat. Musselman had that reputation at Nevada, turning over the roster every year and relying on transfers over high school recruits, and you have to be willing to cut guys loose for that to work. Buzz is a relationship guy, maybe he just doesn't have that in him (but tell that to TJ Starks or Bakari Simmons).

Yeah bama didn't hesitate or wait for an opening - tough business. A quick look at their roster and it looks like a big or two may be moving on although there is a 6' 4" guard I'm not familiar with.

There is nothing wrong with guys finding the appropriate level to play at. It happens everywhere in every sport. Even guys playing in the Southland Conference playing sports like baseball and basketball find that level is a level they don't compete well at and move on to different programs.

Two items that work together in this competitive area:
1) College sports isn't a charity.
2) And guys that love to play don't want to sit on the end of the bench somewhere they aren't going to play.

I don't think we are sitting around waiting for guys to leave. That ain't it. We are just missing. We tried to land guys when we didn't have spots. If they could land two studs today they would land them and then figure out where the room was. So that isn't the problem. The problem is they aren't convincing kids to come here.

Well, if true, that is worse then.

Specifically just the 'bigs' next season, Brown + Henderson + Aku >>>> Marfo + Aku. It will be. Marfo wasn't a high major level guy. He was thick, but wasn't athletic or long enough to hang on a P5 court. Guy couldn't rebound near at the level he did At the smaller school, he couldn't consistently finish point blank shots (he had <50 FG% which is bad for someone whose shot attempts are almost always shorties), he wasn't a rim protector threat on defense.

Buzz is essentially replacing Marfo in the paint next season with Brown + Henderson which is a massive difference in length and athleticism. Brown and Henderson will finish their dunks. Brown and Henderson will block shots.

I think the biggest concern IMO is Buzz needs to get one more transfer who is 'Bucket getter' combo guard or wing. If he can add one more perimeter scorer type, added to all the other pieces, we got a decent chance to be fine. we'll see. I don't think we gotta jump off the cliff at this time regarding next season's roster.

This kid may be one to watch. As looks like Buzz heavily recruited him back in 2018 out of HS (the kid unofficially visited Virginia Tech twice in Spring 2018 per 247), but he ultimately chose Louisville at the time.

His freshman and Sophomore seasons at Louisville, were disappointing numbers, though the kid apparently battled some injury and illness issues. Had surgery on his knee last offseason that caused him to miss preseason practices and first 5 games. Missed 7 games fish year because of ankle sprain.

Either Buzz has completely lost it or he's smarter than everyone. Nickelberry has had injury issues but hasn't done anything when he has played and his shooting percentages are in the 20's. He was one of the most prolific scorers in NC HS history although at what appears to be a very tiny hs.

If we land 3 transfers who averaged a combined 5 points per game this year and they turn out to be good players who help us immediately nobody will ever be able to question him again.

His 3 point percentage was not good but the sample size is kind of low. He was 9 for 39 over his two college seasons at Louisville.

In comparison, Jay Jay Chandler was 54 for 185 attempts over the last 2 seasons.

So maybe a fresh start and if the kid is out of the bad injury luck woods...who knows. But since Buzz did heavily recruit this kid out of HS, plus Jake's tweet above I thought this one was an interesting one to follow.

Nickelberry has really had an injured filled time in college. The below article from SI shows both the difficulty in college and the potential from high school.

Quote:

Nickelberry also dealt with numerous injuries over his two-year Louisville career. He missed the first five games of this past season due to offseason arthroscopic knee surgery, then missed four more games down the stretch due to illness and a wrist injury. As a freshman, he also missed seven late season games due to an ankle injury.

The past season, he averaged just 2.8 points in just nine games and shot 22.2% from the floor and 21.9% on three point attempts. As a freshman, he only saw the court 15 times, averaging 0.8 points while shooting 20.0% and 28.6%.

Nickelberry was Mack's first recruit upon taking the head coaching position at Louisville, joining as part of the 'Super Six' Class of 2019. As a senior for Northwood Temple Academy, he averaged 26.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game leading them a 20-14 record and a runner-up position in the 2019 1A NCISAA North Carolina state championship.

Despite finishing with 2,904 career points in high school, Nickelberry departs Louisville having only scored 37 career points as a Cardinal.

Alabama just dumped Langston Wilson. He was the No. 1 JUCO power forward. The portal is nowhere close to drying up. Just a lot of chess pieces moving around all over the place.

I guess it comes with the territory but it sucks seeing these kids get dropped this late in the game. People like Dickie V get on their high horse about how kids transferring ruins the game and shows a lack of character by the players, but not too many tears shed or ink spilt for guys who get recruited over at the last minute.

We held a couple of zoom calls with him in October before he committed to Bama.

This transfer portal and the new rules for transferring should kill November's early signing period. Why would any recruit sign early when the school will just take it away when they get a better player in the portal five months later.

I don't know the answer, but this transfer portal has been a recruiting game changer....big-time.

Exactly...people assume transfers are the idea of the player when in many cases it's the coaching staff telling him he won't play and it's best to transfer.

That big pickup for TCU. Was talk of Texas hiring his dad (which still could happen).

you got the analogy wrong. The athletic programs are the chairs...

Some of the players in the Transfer Portal ultimately wont find a landing spot.

No, no, the players are the music, the programs are the chairs, and the portal is... the ... players, who... dance in a circle around... the ... portal... until... ah, **** it.

I don't want to sound pessimistic but A. Daye had a 3P% of ~28%...and FT% below 70%...it would be awesome to get a guard with consistent shooting.

Miller Kopp's recruitment has been really quiet. He's been in there for 3 weeks and no real word on who he is looking at. I'd take him over all the available guys we seem to be after on this thread. We might not have a shot though.

Kopp would be a great addition.

I was searching for information on him a few days ago and ran into a lot of Indiana fans talking him up to come there.

I understanding he is home working out in Houston.

I imagine on a lot of cases like this, the player already knows or has a very strong idea where the landing spot is going to be. He's already been 'poached'.

Also, as of now, he has declared for the NBA draft. He can withdraw, but won't commit anywhere until he does.
