I'll tell you Sunday morning how 2M does. We'll be there around 10am if anyone wants to join us.

I ate at 407 BBQ in Corral City (between Fort Worth and Denton on 35) last week and was pleasantly surprised. It's in a little shack and produced some great bbq. Wish I had taken some pics. It's up there with Cattleack for DFW area based off my one experience.

Field report on 2M...

In short, if you haven't been, go! Got there around 10am on Sunday, first in line with the wife and our friends from Austin. Line quickly filled out to about 40 deep by opening.

The food:

  • Brisket... Top notch. I'd put it in my Top 5. Salty, smoky, tender. Perfect bites (had all three cuts... moist, lean (first cut off the lean so had a nice layer of fat on top, and end cut off the moist.)
  • Ribs... Some of the best I've had. Sweet, but not too sweet and the right amount of salt and pepper. Tender, but not overly cooked (i..e "fall off the bone."
  • Sausages... The beef was "ok" by my book. Was a little tight for a beef link, needed a little more fat. I LOVED the oaxacan cheese and serrano sausage. The wife not as much.
  • Turkey was... well turkey. Hard to mess it up, but didn't stand out.
  • Pulled pork... hand pulled and sauced/seasoned on the board. Nice porky flavor.
  • Chichironi mac... I'm stealing this... Really good. Mac not too soupy, chichironis gave it a nice crunch.
  • Pickled nopales. Interesting. First time I've ever had something like that. Could have used a smaller serving.
  • Borracho Beans... IMO, they were a miss. way too much "stuff" in there like tomates and big pieces of onion. Hid the beans.

Overall, a fantastic experience. Got to chat with Esaul for a bit as we were leaving. He's a great guy!

I ate at the Q Smokehouse in the E Terminal at IAH yesterday and it was better than 90% of BBQ in Colorado. Particularly enjoyed the sausage and the green beans. The brisket was a tad dry, but was tender and had a nice bark and seasoning. That setup they built is pretty awesome. That whole section of gates smelled like BBQ.

Made it by 2M today. Got there at 11:30 and after 20min had my food. Great BBQ

--Brisket - a bit more salty than most, but really good. I got the first cut off a new brisket and it was probably the best piece I've ever had.
--Pork Rib - Good. Cooked perfect, but just a tad sweeter than I would prefer.
--Chicharrni Macaroni - the mac & cheese itself wasn't anything special, but the chicharrones on top was a really nice touch.

Just look at that....

If anyone is out in the Rockdale area around lunch time, stop in and see me at Brett's Backyard BBQ. I'll be guest cutting on the block!

Terry Black's had a line out the door today for lunch, so I opted to swing by LeRoy & Lewis instead.

Beef cheek, Thanksgiving sausage, kale caesar slaw, ranch seasoned pork rinds, kimchi in lieu of pickles, and beet bbq sauce.

Everything was really good. Loved the beef cheek, and the Thanksgiving sausage was creative and tasty. Pork rinds were a little too hard. Kale slaw was good as well, maybe a little too wet. Kimchi was meh, but I'm not expecting amazing funky kimchi from a bbq food truck.

I like that there is a bbq offering out there that isn't just the standard brisket, ribs, and sausage. They do offer brisket on the weekends however. Also they have cool options like brisket pho, barbacado (avocado stuffed with barbacoa), and Mac and cheese stuffed quail.

Here is their Instagram if you want to see more from them.

On some days... and generally, on the weekends at Brett's in Rockdale!

However, this SUNDAY! SUNDAY! SUNDAY! (hear that in your best Monster Truck Voice!) Come out to Friends and Allies Brewing for the Austin vs. Houston BBQ Throwdown. Brett's Backyard Bar-B-Que will be representing MILAM COUNTY and slinging some great 'Que! Look out Austin and Houston (and Longview...) #SmallTownBigFlavor in the hizz-ouse!!! I can't tell you what we'll be cooking yet... but I can tell you it's gonna rock!

These events that have been held at Saint Arnold have been my favorite bbq events to attend. Well worth the time and price of admission. I've got a race Sunday otherwise I'd be there.

Y'all have fun. I can't wait to see pictures!

It's at Heights Blvd and Washington, used to be called J Blacks. I know they were targeting this month but we'll see.

I'm off the running diet, so I wanted to hit a few Bbq stops on my way home from Burnet. Payne's BBQ Shak was the first stop. Unfortunately Black Box was offline due to inspections and Pustka's was already sold out of everything but turkey by 1:30.

I only got one lunch today.

Yes. BBQ was pretty good but don't expect much out of their beer. It's a neat place though with a nice outside patio.

Tried Cattleack in Dallas today for the first time. Got there at 10:35 and got food just after 11. I think the line was shorter than normal due to the weather/rain.

Brisket - disappointing. Seemed like there was too much heat, smoke, or both. Had an unusually dark color.
Port Ribs - good, fairly sweet, nothing special
Pulled Pork - ok, pretty fatty
Pork Steak (not pictured) - the best meat I had. Good stuff.
Mac & Cheese - really good and had a bit of heat with green chilies

A really good meal, but was honestly let down a bit.

I think you hit the nail on the head with the brisket there. You would think with being open two days a week they wouldn't have consistency issues, but they smoke everything on big stick burners out back. I wonder if they got hot with the high wind that was blowing through with the cold front?

We went to Killens STQ last night, and while it's not technically the BBQ restaurant, it's still pretty delicious. I got the beef rib (and smoke beef rib tamales).

Wow that's the worst looking brisket I've ever seen from Cattleack. Bummer.
