2M for lunch today. Arrived at 11:35. No line. Walked up and ordered. If this place was in Austin I'd be waiting 2hrs for a meal like this...

Was prepped to go to 2M this morning with some Co workers. But they were ready to leave town at 9:00. I tried lolligagging to no avail. smh

Had a few BBQ stops recently.

Had Butters Barbecue in Mathis. They're new guys on the scene and are following Aaron Franklin's style specifically. It's very promising early on. These guys could be really, really good. As I mention in my tweet below, they're clearly better than "Top 50" Smolik's (what a travesty that ranking is) which is right down the road. They may be moving from the big city of Mathis to Orange Grove when their lease expires.
Fun fact: Their current lot used to house a filling station where my great grandfather first worked.

Finally made it to The Granary for lunch. I've done dinner, which is an event. But lunch is a different experience. It's straightforward Texas BBQ and it was all very good. Simple rubs, though a bit heavier on the salt. I think the brisket won the day. Dinner is more high brow, but the food at lunch is better from a BBQ standpoint.

Stopped at Heim today on my way through Fort Worth. It's the first time I've not had to wait in a lengthy line. Perhaps Monday is the day to go or else the hype is dying down. I still love these guys and they're still Grade A to me. Obligatory "Bacon Burnt Ends" reference.

I'm in North Texas for the week, but have taken Thursday off for one specific reason: To finally visit Cattleack BBQ. (I may make a few more stops on my to do list).

Im glad you said Smoliks is over rated. I was gunna make the Trek there from Corpus to try it, but not anymore. Will try the new spot you mentioned.

If you try Smoliks, go to the old building downtown, not the new one on the highway. I'm sure it's the same stuff but I like it better at the old location.

100% correct. The old location is way better (but you don't get the stamp if you're looking for that).

The brisket at Butter's was a bit dry, but they definitely have potential.

What is y'all's favorite in Corpus? As inconsistent as it is, I'm still on Hoegemeyers.

My wife and I had an opportunity to try Baker Boys in Gonzales last Friday, got there just before noon and had 15 or so in front of us. Quad that by the time we got our food but down to zip by the time we left.

We decided to split a two meat platter with brisket and pork ribs, sides were mac and cheese and green beans. We added a link of sausage and a stuffed drumstick.

We both thought the sides were good, not great but good. The ribs and the chicken were good as well. The sausage was really good but the kicker was the brisket - excellent! Moist and tender... seasoned well with good smoke.

I think we were the only tourists in the place, maybe that's what prompted Wayne Baker over to say hello and ask our opinion of the Q. Had a nice visit and he seems like a good guy, glad we stopped.

I have been to the Granary multiple times. The last time it was good, not great, but every time before that it was top 10 for me. Love the location and layout of the place. Great home brewed Root Beer as well. Usually their ribs are the best, but their brisket is always really good too. Love the homemade bread and great pickles. The sides are all incredible as well. Just wondering where you would place it in your pecking order. I am dying to try 2M now in SA. Cattleack is also on my lists of must tryst now.

Have you tried Julian's? I've only had it once but thought it was excellent.

Thursdays aren't normally an issue, in fact the line supposedly dies down around 11:50-12 pm.

My old go to Hutchins for dinner tonight. It's still my favorite in the metroplex. They nail it even at dinner.

I might re-evaluate after lunch tomorrow

Tough one ! I had a couple that I liked before I went to any of the top10 places. Now to me, they are just very bleh. I'm ruined. (Garret's, Silverado Smoke House, Rudy's, Mesquite BBQ)

I haven't had this one since my sabbatical, but I remember Cotten's being pretty good.

Will try BBQ Man in a few months for a work meeting. And I hear I need to try Mr. G's but I hear mixed reviews on them.

Will try Hoegemeyers soon too.

Hoegemeyer's BBQ Barn is good. Howard's BBQ is the old school classic place that's been around a long time. Mr. G's is good as well. To bad Hatfield's BBQ is closed it was good and TM Top 50 but the business partners had a falling out.

Went to Valentinas this week. No wait and great food. I got a couple tacos but saw someone order a beef rib, will probably make that choice next time. Carnitas taco was awesome.

I've done a pretty good job of documenting Corpus area places on my map: http://www.texasbbqadventures.com/p/texas-bbq-adventures-roadmap.html

There is a lot of average bbq in the coastal bend. Hoegemeyers is the only one that has ever wowed me on a specific trip, but as I mentioned, it's wildly inconsistent, so I always offer a disclaimer when I send people there.

Julians hasn't blown me away, but they're nice folks and they have a terrific beef rib. Mac's in Portland is pretty good. I'm somewhat partial to Mike Cotten's - the Calallen location is a bit more traditional and dependable.

I think a year from now, we'll be talking about Butters being the best in the area.

I showed up about 9:45 and was second in line to Cattleack. Other people started showing about 10:00 and the doors opened a bit before 10:30.

The brisket was phenomenal. Certainly some of the best in the state. I got a nice little crusty end cut. The crust was substantial, fat was well rendered, plenty of pepper and smoke. It's a really well done brisket.

The ribs were sweet. Still had some of that black pepper. Great texture on the ribs.

I went with the hatch green chile cheese link. It was a dense link with a surprising amount of heat. It was a bit dry, but overall a good link.

Pulled pork was nice and moist, a solid straightforward take.

I normally go pretty minimally on the sides, but I couldn't pass theirs up. They looked appealing and they did not disappoint.

I loved the space.

I think Cattleack may have found its way into my top 10 on the back of the brisket. It's certainly the best in the Metroplex and is the first in the area that I don't have to say "This place is really good, but..." when referring people.

Great meal, great experience. Well worth the hype.

Oh and a few other stops:

Intrinsic Smokehouse & Brewery - Subpar

Top 5 BBQ in Desoto - Ribs are unique (and surprisingly not bad). Brisket was a a lump of garbage.

Thanks!

Mickelthwait did not disappoint. Probably could have just gone with the right tray. First stop of a couple so no sides.

I'm really surprised that Top 5 in Desoto made any list whatsoever. The brisket was bad when I was there. I'm going to give them one more try since I'm down there for work a lot but I'm guessing it'll be my last stop.

Went to Cattleack today and maybe I just overhyped the place too much. It was good but the brisket wasn't at a Franklin or La BBQ level for me. The pork ribs were great. The burnt end beans were really good too.

Wait was too bad. Arrived at 10:30, was eating by 11:05.

Pairing up bbq with beer today. At Hops and Grain now. Gonna hit La BBQ and then Blue Owl. If we're still alive, Stiles Switch and Austin Beerworks. Desert at Jester King.

Jester King is a great brew tour, and if you're tired of bbq by then they have a great pizza place on the property. La BBQ is great as well, but Stiles Switch might disappoint you. They are really inconsistent these days. I would recommend Terry Blacks.

Its more about proximity to breweries than overall reputation. I live in Colorado. Rudys is better than 90% of our offerings. Stiles Switch is the closest place we wanted check out near ABW.

Plans already changed though because La BBQ was a **** show. Not waiting in an hour line. Beer time again!
