Brewers up 3-0

Rays and Guardians tied at 1

so it looks like a long-suffering fanbase / franchise will win a title this year

and that's kind of been the theme of the 21st century in MLB

started with the Red Sox in 2004, then the Giants, Royals, Cubs, Astros, Nationals, Rangers, et al

Blue Jays missed their chance to join the list last year

The job is brutally bad. High expectations, mid roster with low level roster likely after trades or letting guys walk, bad farm system,

I don't see one of those bench coach guys taking this gig.

I'm not the biggest Espada fan but even with the best manager you could find, how many games do we win this last year? 86?

We had 4 quality pitchers on the entire roster.

I will struggle to be optimistic until we see some sign of Crane coming to his senses

Basically, this. Managers matter. GMs atter way more. If Crane misses on this next hire or doesn't allow the next hire to do their job, we're screwed.

Given Crane / Baggie's track record, we're screwed.

It was interesting to see Gavin Dickey's name as one of the guys kept around as an asst. GM. Reading on him, it sounds like he was Dana's bridge between analytics and scouting. No idea if that telegraphs anything about where Jim might go with his next GM hire, but seeing him kept around gives me some hope.

Fair enough that you could hide in that not everyone could hit it at you, but for the 3 or 4 balls a game that would come at you it would be a serious adventure. IMO RF is the hardest outfield position to play because you get some wicked slices on the ball coming off the bat and you have to make some of the longest throws.

I do think that it'd be a fun experiment to see how many posters on this board could actually run down a towering fly ball to the gap.

Those of us that played baseball competitively at least through high school would be able to pick it back up quickly as long as our physical skills haven't declined too much. Heck, over 20 years since my last competitive game and if I sit in the outfield at games I can still read stuff off the bat really well.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here...

Over the past 20 years your baseball skills have indeed declined.

Keep in mind there's two parts at play. Baseball skill versus physical ability. I can read fly balls off the bat all day and know where I need to get to. The problem is getting there lol. I'm too old and broken down to run fast. Hell I can barely run slow.

This conversation is heading dangerously close to "I see more hot women at the Target in the suburbs than are in Hollywood" territory.

Well when you're actively buying championships it's quite shocking to lose. Has to be a reason, right?

How's Mookie Betts hitting when he doesn't know what pitch is coming?

My neck is so stiff I don't think I could look up high enough to track a fly ball in the infield.

Man - I wish the post season was on actual TV. All the rounds except for the WS being on TBS or FS1 sucks.

Can't say many of those names besides Pujols, Maldy, or Ensberg fill me with optimism.

Yes, but Bagwell is a fan of nepotism, and let's face it, he'll be running the show regardless of who is in the GM chair.

In a functional organization, but we're talking Astros on this thread.

This team needs a kick in the ass if you ask me. I'll probably get banned for even whispering it, but a guy like Aaron Boone would be the personality I would hope for in our next manager. Maybe Maldy brings that fire but I don't wanna nice guy. I want someone who will hold everyone, players, coaches, staff accountable.

That's why I like Maldy. He is smart, prepared, but tough and fiery as well.

They first offered it to Bobby Dynamite. We balked when he asked for a third pair of overalls. Moved on to Omar. We promised to show a picture of him with the WBC trophy every broadcast and he went for it. Well, that and a box of those paddles with the rubber ball and the rubber bands tied to it.

Should have offered to let Bagwell get it on with the hand doctor's ex-wife in the tender for the train during a game if he would leave afterwards and never come back.

If Shohei gets hot and the Dodgers roll out Skubal and Yamamoto for games 5 and 6 the series gets interesting real quick.
