Not really. I read his post that it was a gift he wanted to resell. I like the hat.

Couple Rangers moves:

Robertson declined his mOpt.

Looks like Rays director of baseball operations Cole Figueroa will take same role Asst GM with Rangers.

Eovaldi, et al, have until 5pm E Monday to declare.

TEXAS RANGERS ANNOUNCE ROSS FENSTERMAKER PROMOTED TO GENERAL MANAGER
Former MLB infielder Cole Figueroa hired as Assistant General Manager;
Justin Viele hired as Major League Hitting Coach

Arlington, Texas The Texas Rangers today announced that Ross Fenstermaker has been promoted to General Manager. He becomes the 10th individual in Rangers history to serve in the role of General Manager.

The club has also hired former Major League infielder Cole Figueroa as Assistant General Manager and Justin Viele (pronounced "VEE-lee") as Major League Hitting Coach.

The 38-year-old Fenstermaker has served the past three years as Vice President/Assistant General Manager for Player Development and International Operations. In his previous role, he had oversight of the player development/minor league operations departments and was also responsible for the Rangers' international amateur scouting efforts. He had additional involvement in other areas of baseball operations under Chris Young and department leaders.

He will be entering his 16th season overall with the Rangers, his eighth based in Arlington, as Fenstermaker has extensive experience in professional and international scouting. He was the Senior Director of Pro & International Scouting from 2020-21 and Director of Pro Scouting in 2018-19. He spent the 2017 season as International Crosschecker after serving as a professional scout from 2011-16. Ross began his tenure with the organization in 2010 as a baseball operations intern.

A native of Granite Bay, California, Ross was a left-handed pitcher at Granite Bay High School (graduated 2004) and the University of California-Davis (graduated 2008).

Figueroa, 37, joins the Rangers after eight seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays organization. He has served the past three years as the Rays' Director of Baseball Operations, where some of his responsibilities included baseball strategy, player/market evaluations, and long-term growth of baseball operations staff. While at the Rays, Figueroa also spent time as assistant of baseball development and assistant director of hitting development.

A former infielder, Figueroa spent three seasons in the Majors with the Rays (2014), Yankees (2015), and Pirates (2016) before beginning his career in baseball operations with the Rays in November 2016. A native of Tallahassee, Fla., he was selected by the Padres in the sixth round of the 2008 MLB Draft out of the University of Florida.

Viele (pronounced "VEE-lee"), who turns 34 on November 13, has spent the last five seasons (2020-24) as a hitting coach for the San Francisco Giants. While working with current Rangers coach Donnie Ecker in 2021, Viele helped lead the Giants offense to a franchise-record 241 home runs, the second-highest total in MLB that season (262-Toronto). Prior to joining the Giants, Viele spent three years as a hitting coach in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization in 2019 (Low-A Great Lakes), 2018 (High-A Rancho Cucamonga), and 2017 (Rookie-level Ogden). He also served as the hitting coach of the Glendale Desert Dogs of the Arizona Fall League following the 2018 season. In 2015, Viele joined the coaching staff at his alma mater, Santa Clara University, as an assistant coach a position he held for two seasons.

A native of Fullerton, Calif., Viele played two professional seasons in the Baltimore organization following his selection by the Orioles in the 37th round of the 2013 MLB Draft out of Santa Clara University. He combined to bat .211 in 126 pro games, reaching Low-A Delmarva of the South Atlantic League in 2014. Prior to that, Viele hit .242 over 154 games spanning three collegiate seasons for the Broncos.

I'm mixed.

$20M would be well spent... 1yr/$20M. Sure. What he brings as a mentor to young pitchers... his presence... and the clutchness he showed was awesome.

He will want at least a 3yr deal, I suppose. Some say 2/$45-50M. I'd pay 1yr/$45M if we went to the WS.

I think we've done as well as we could have hoped with him and think it may be time to move on...

Hard to say, not knowing what the TV deal is going to be and what the payroll allowance will be. Personally I'd rather see them go all-in on Corbin Burnes, but that's extremely unlikely. My concern about paying too much for Eovaldi is it'll remove the team's ability to address other needs...closer being the main one IMO.

For me, 3 years is a stretch. I'd see if he'd take 2/50M and expect him to say no. The word has pretty consistently been that the team isn't going over the CBT, so when you combine that with the TV uncertainty, it's just really hard to make much of an educated guess.

So much for me having good opinions lol
Jimbo Franchione
DallasAg 94
How long do you want to ignore this user?
You tried.

I'm a soft "No" on 3 years. 2/$50 is essentially $20M/$30M. I'm a not committing $30M. Too much of an injury risk.

The financials as I see them... I know the TV thing has uncertainty, but I have almost every reason to believe we'll be at the CBT for 2025. Hopefully $10M below, so we can stay below if necessary, at the Trade Deadline.

How it is...

For 2025:
Projected MLB CBT: $241M
Projected Rangers CBT (w/out Eovaldi): $184M <- That should include Serfs and projected Arbs.
Projected Rangers Salary: $176M (w/out Eovaldi).

That leaves $57M in CBT.

For 2026:
Projected Rangers CBT: $114M
Projected Rangers Payroll: $95.5M

Now, the Rangers could be looking to work some magic with Eovaldi. He declines his $20M pOpt for '25. The Rangers then come back with a 3yr/$62M deal where he gets $12M in '25, then $25M in each of '26/'27. That essentially adds 2yr@$21M to his pOpt, but moves the Cash Flow (Payroll) of '25, giving the Rangers $8M more to spend in '25 where there is revenue uncertainty. It doesn't help with CBT, but accomplishes keeping Eovaldi.
DallasAg 94
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Looking at that $57M in CBT...

I think we NEED:

2nd C
3rd/4th OF
RHB/DH

1 Innings eating SP <- Heaney/Lorenzen type
1 depth/risk guy <- Mahle/Urena type
1 Swing SP/RP <- Heaney/Urena type

1 8th RP
1 Closer

I'll post separately about how some of that could play out internally, but wanted to mention what I need are open slots on the 26.

Atl just declined Travis d'Arnaud's $8M option for '25. Would he be worth considering?!

I think with CY and our FO... we've show we can pull in some RPs. I think there are some internal options, but RP is fickle.

8 guys with $57M is about $8M per player.
DallasAg 94
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Let's talk P.

Locks for the rotation (3): deGrom, Mahle, Bradford
Hopefully Bradford doesn't become Harrison. We'll need 2 SPs in depth for each (4 total) of deGrom and Mahle to account for innings lost to IL. Top 3... but wouldn't rely on any to be a playoff SP.

Options at #4 (1): Gray, Dunning
Neither has emerged as you'd have hoped. Can be moved to open salary.

Options at #5 (1): Rocker, Leiter, White (25-Serf2)
I think one of these guys should be in the rotation to start the season, if only to get some innings in.

That's 8 SPs to start the season, if all are "healthy." I think we'll need at least 2 more SP.

I wouldn't pencil anyone in as a 150+ IP guy.

Wants (1): "Cheap" Eovaldi, Sasaki, Heaney <- $15M +/-
Wants (1): Lorenzen, Urena, type <- $10M max on multiple year deal

RP (7):
Church (23-Serf)
Sborz? (30-Arb2) - He was great in the playoffs, but can't remain healthy and is suspect during the season.
Corniell (21-Minors) - Could make the jump in '25.
Latz (28-Serf2)
Festa (31-Serf3)
Daniel Robert (30-Serf2-LHP)
Walter Pennington (26-Serf-LHP)
---
GAnderson (27-Serf2): JAG
Garabito (28-Serf): Could be a middle reliever
Coleman (26) - Taken from Yanks in RuleV after '23 season
Winn?

Wants (1): Robertson <- $6-7M guy
Wants (1): Yates <- $10M guy

Spend about $40-45M on Pitching.

At $57M remaining in CBT, that leaves about $12-17M for a 2C, DH.

That gives some ideas on numbers we could start looking considering.
DallasAg 94

Here is a trade thought...

Jordan Montgomery: 1yr/$22.5M - 25GS, 6.38 ERA in 117 IP.
for
Jon Gray: 1yr/$13.0M - 23GS, 4.47 ERA in 102.2 IP

You might even get the Az owner to throw in a few bucks... maybe some Int'l Pool money.

I just don't see Gray making the Rangers rotation in '25.

I think there will be a ton of $12-13M SPs available but few people will pay the full $22.5M for Monty. The Az owner has made it toxic for Monty, so I expect the owner to unload him. I think the sooner he does it the more he'll get back.

I'd sign up for that because I am with you, I don't think the Rangers want Jon Gray on this team much.

I would be fine with that but AZ would need to kick in a substantial amount of money and/or a prospect or two. I don't care about Gray one way or the other and Montgomery was great for us during his time here, but he was awful in 2024.

I think he'd earn the money as a high leverage multi-inning reliever.

Newberg is saying that the Rangers are hiring Skip Schumaker as senior advisor to Chris Young, with the possibility that he will take Bochy's place when he is ready to step down. That is really, really interesting.

Not sure. This is what Newberg said.

Schumaker was the 2023 NL Manager of the Year (winning 84 games in his first year at the helm after Miami had won fewer than 70 in each of its previous full full seasons), but after that season ended, he and the Marlins mutually agreed to void his 2025 club option (at his request) after the organization fired General Manager Kim Ng, who had originally hired him

A good write up from the AFL:

Osuna (#16 prospect per MLB) having a great season:

We likely see Osuna and Stephan in '25.

Stephan seems like a Dane Dunning type, lower 90's guy. I am good with that if he can get outs at the MLB level.

Quote:

He excelled in High-A last year with a 2.17 ERA, .175 opponents' average against and 73/12 K/BB ratio in 62 1/3 innings, but he sustained a stress fracture in his back during fielding drills after his first Double-A start and missed the final two months. His overall 0.84 WHIP led all Minor League pitchers who worked at least 60 innings.

Stephan doesn't light up radar guns but he can really pitch with his low-90s fastballs, creating run and sink on a two-seamer that sits at 91-92 mph and carry and run on a four-seamer that's a tick harder. They tunnel well with his plus low-80s slider, which has more depth than horizontal action. He also has advanced feel for a fading low-80s changeup.

Stephan features an easy delivery that he repeats well, giving him plus control and the makings of solid command. His low arm slot and release height create life and deception without costing him strikes. He needs to add some strength and falls in love with his slider at times, but his pitchability and competitiveness give him a high floor and the upside of a No. 4 starter.

I know some don't like to hear about the Rule V draft, but that is coming up and will be interesting, IMO.

It is Dec 11, at noon CT. I think it will cause a number of moves by the Rangers. Some are just necessary.

Stephan (23-AA-#25 prospect) is eligible. Spent the entire '24 season at AA (11GS, 4.94 ERA, 58.1 IP). He has 16.2 IP in AFL with an 0.54 ERA and 17 SO.

Will he make the '25 rotation for an MLB team? Probably not. Could a team stash him during the season?! Sure.

Emiliano Teodo (23-AA-#6 prospect) is also Rule V eligible and all spent the entire 2024 season at AA Frisco.
Teodo : 19GS, 1.98 ERA, 86.1 IP, 110 SO

Our 3 Hitters in Surprise in the AFL (stats below) are doing well and RuleV eligible, as well, IIRC:
Alejandro Osuna (CF-22- #16): .333, .977 OPS
Cody Freeman (2B-23): .308, .924 OPS
Max Acosta (SS-22): .298, .866 OPS

I doubt the Rangers will put Stephan on the 40, but Teodo is a lock. So is Osuna IMO. Freeman and Acosta are iffy.

I believe 36.

But, we have some culling, IMO.

Bubble guys that could be moved.
Carson Coleman (RP) - Picked up by Rule V before 2024, having had TJ in '23. Setback in '24 and he won't pitch in '25. Could be offered back to Yankees.
Garabito (P) - picked up from a Men's league in South America.

Fabian (OF) - picked up from FA mid-season, IIRC.

Guys like White (24) and Winn (24)... Daniel Robert (29) and Walter Pennington (26)... Festa (31). They could all probably be let go (term?) and re-signed to minor league deals.
