Mets QO'd Thor. Will be interesting to see what he chooses. He really ought to take it.

I was skimming some free agent projection article today at lunch, they thought he'd take it if offered (which he was offered per your post). He's been injured the past couple years and hasn't pitched much, so they thought he'd take the cash and play for a long term deal vs. taking a lower valued long term deal now coming off injury. We'll see.

My humor doesn't always come through. Probably because I'm not very funny.

Re: Kershaw.

I don't necessarily think we should sign him, just making the point he wouldn't cost draft picks, he is a home town boy and often rumored to come back home.

I have no idea what he is worth or that the Rangers would find any value in him... other than he is from HP.

Was reading today and he is only 33? How is that possible, seems like he has been playing longer than that. Theoretically he should have more years in him, but obviously he tends to hit the DL quite a bit too. Would be a gamble. Maybe he'd take a hometown discount? lol, nobody seems to fall for that with the Rangers.

He'd at least be a "name" player. True story, I was going to get my kid a new Ranger jersey last season when we were in town for the game. Said he'd pass for now. Wasn't ready to commit to Gallo since we were looking to trade him and no telling how long anybody else was staying . Said he'd wait until we had some better players on the team until he committed to a jersey for one of them Guess he played his cards right on Gallo.

For sure! Kershaw and Syndergaard both have injury issue and both have DFW area roots, so they may be receptive. JD will have a hard time containing himself.

Hmm, we'll see. Not so much the names mentioned in the article, just the spending part.

I'll believe they will greatly increase spending when it happens.

I'm resigned to the notion that if the Rangers sign a FA, it's going to be Trevor Story. I still think that's a mistake.
Here's his career splits:

  • Home: 375 G, .303/.369/.603, 216 XBH (95 HR), 24.7 K%
  • Away: 370 G, .241/.310/.442, 149 XBH (63 HR), 30.6 K%

That's concerning to me. The player we would be getting, IMO, is a .270/.330/.525 and around 20-25 HR with a 25-30% K rate.

Good player, no doubt. Superstar? Nope. Maybe he would be a good addition depending on what else they are able to do in trades & free agency, but otherwise he's a Shin Soo Choo type player IMO, and we'll be paying him more than his actual value.

Flame away.

As an Astros fan, I don't know why the Rangers wouldn't target Correa. He's only 26 so when the Rangers come out of the doldrums he will still only be 28 or 29. Story is two years older and, as you noted, has much more risk of being unproductive in a new home.

I want no part of Correa and his iffy back.

He is a risky sign at the salary he wants and there is a reason the Astros are not going to pay him what he want.

I'll take Story.... move IKF to 2nd promote Jung... Ask Kershaws people..... but i think he returns to Dodgers on a 2/20 type deal then retires a Dodger.

If Correa signs a 5+ year deal, it will likely have multiple opt-out years.

The reason has nothing to do with injury concern. Our owner doesn't like the idea of going beyond 5 years for anyone. Correa is the first one who got a 6 year offer. No way he gets that if they have any concerns about his back.

I'm guessing we get Correa or Seager
Proposition Joe

Neither make much sense right now.

Despite what the front office says is available to be spent, I imagine this year we'll be pretty tight with things again. Simply not enough good pieces to build around yet. A year away from going hard in free agency.

That is my concern. I don't want a $330MM player with a history of back issues.

I also think it is part of the astros concern. He may not like the idea of going beyond 5 years, but if Correa was an ironman he would be more likely to get a longer deal that he wants.

I know it was 20+ years ago now (crazy to believe), but signing Correa would be worse than Alex Rodriguez.

Yeah, the only thing worse than not spending this offseason is committing $100mm to guys that are just eating salary 3-4 years from now. Gotta be smart with this one
Proposition Joe

Surely you guys don't really think we'd make a big mega-contract free agent acquisition or trade without going being very meticulous about the physical eval?

That would be a royal eff up that would result in us being paupers of the league.

If I'm the Rangers, I'm not signing more than one "big name" FA this year - mainly because of the draft pick compensation that is involved.

I don't think you give up multiple draft picks unless you feel you're ready to compete for a WS right now. And the Rangers clearly aren't there yet.

That brings to question .... when is Collective Bargaining Agreement to be redone... seems Ive read that is a big red flag for the players because teams dont want to lose their picks. So they dont pick up as many FA's.

Absolutely, it will probably be a hot button topic in negotiating the new CBA. Who knows how it will turn out. But under the current rules, it's problematic.

I believe the current CBA expires on 12/1. So I don't expect to see any signings of players that would require compensation until after that date. No telling what the new rules will be regarding free agents.

I'm not worried about the splits at all. I think they're overblown.

Look at Arenado's historical split vs this year with St Louis.

Or offering below market value to lots of high end free agents, sign none, and then say "Well we tried".

Thor to the Angels, pending physical.

1 year, $21 million. Horrible deal. They gave up a draft pick for that

Apparently Ohtani wants to compete and will go elsewhere if the angles can't get in contention next year.

I guess that puts an end to any thoughts about him "coming home." LOL.

Can't wait to see the haul of FAs the Rangers and $100M brings in...

I wouldn't sign Syndergaard this year as someone that received a QO. Why the hell would you give up a draft pick for a lottery ticket. Let him accept his QO and go get him next year if he pans out.

The Rangers are stupid but the Angels are really stupid. I hope they suck for the next 40 years.

Especially for a 1 year deal. I cannot wrap my head around that.
