So what is the philosophy of this team and front office going forward?

Really hoping we get to a point that putting the ball in play and loathing strikeouts makes a comeback.

I don't think anybody knows.

Typical GM speak that the front office is willing to spend, and he will call it a Win and take credit for at least trying even if they don't sign anyone.

The drought continues. No MLB team from Texas has ever won a legitimate world title

Congrats to the Atlanta Braves. I bet if you did a poll….. 49 states and most cities outside of Houston in Texas were pulling for the Braves.

Not necessarily Rangers related but my brother sent these to me today. He is soon to be the Director of Player Development at USMA and travels to all the Army games.

Was hoping to go to the game this weekend but won't be able to make it.

Maybe we could brand Globe Life Field with Tampa Bay Rays logos and colors until the owner gets the hint that we don't want this franchise representing DFW anymore.

This would be a huge pick up for our team. I wanted him 2 years ago when he was a FA. Hope it works out.

So did I. IIRC, he got a very team friendly deal.

And perhaps a player or two off of this list, since we have money to spend

Maybe Castellanos plus a pitcher?

Yep. In no particular order, I like Ray, Stroman, and Rodon from that article

How about Castellanos as a pitcher?

Phillies declined their option on McCutcheon today. Any value there for a 1 year deal at 9 or 10 million? I don't think think it would be terrible. He's not the player he used to be but could be a good veteran prescence in the locker room.

He's been pretty average for some time. Entering his age 35 season. Slashed .222/.334/.444.

Did have 27 HRs, twice as many as Joey Gallo. And 6 more sac flies than Gallo.

Castellanos would seem highly unlikely.

Quote:

The Scott Boras client had two years and $34MM remaining on his contract but will seek a lengthier contract (and a heftier annual value) on the open market. The Reds can, and surely will, extend an $18.4MM qualifying offer to Castellanos which he's a lock to reject.
Are the Rangers willing to give up their 2nd and 5th picks, to sign him?!

He has $17M/yr for 2 years... we'd likely have to go 5yr.

I just don't see the Rangers going after QO FAs.

We need 2 SPs, a 2B, a 3B/SS, and two OF, just to get going.

I don't understand the rule of having to give up picks

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/10/which-draft-picks-each-team-would-forfeit-by-signing-a-qualified-free-agent.html

Quote:

The collective bargaining agreement expires on December 1st, and it's unclear whether its rules for draft pick compensation will remain in place for the 2021-22 offseason, whenever teams eventually sign free agents. It's at least possible that the current rules will be used once more. We know that the qualifying offer is set at $18.4MM this winter, and by mid-November we'll know which players received and turned down a QO. If those players sign with new teams, here's a look at the draft picks each signing club would lose if the old rules are used.

There has always been a cost/reward associated with QO on certain FAs. The current agreement ends 12/1. So, it is possible there won't be a cost... but small market teams are going to want some level of leverage, I would think.

The root of the changes started back when the Rangers signed a bunch of FAs like Gagne. QO would get you a Comp pick, so the Rangers leveraged it to get a bunch of picks. MLB changed the requirement that you had to be on a team for a year, in order to get a Comp pick. That killed the trade market.

Gagne was traded in 2007 by Tex to Bos. Bos was willing to give up more prospects to get Gagne, because they would get a Comp pick... that was the #45 pick in 2008.

Giving up picks for a QO guy is something teams that are competing right now do. Not sure I want to give up that much for a guy whose best years for us are gonna be when we're, at best, average.
AggieEP

My guess is the draft pick compensation goes away this time, or at the very least teams may get "a pick" but a signing team won't give one up, it'll just be a new pick added in where the compensation would have been. Current system really depresses the free agent market and it's probably a red line item for the players in negotiations.

Kershaw was not given a QO... Welcome home Clayton. Maybe?!

As much as I like the idea of bringing in a top flight pitcher, what's the point? A $25 MM a year guy is gonna - get you to .500? Probably not.

We have seven - SEVEN - starting pitching prospects who we need to find out if they are major league pitchers. And all these guys are NOW - 2022 guys.

Dunning
Allerd
Hearn
Howard
Otto
Alexy
Winn

This coming season, these guys are gonna get every opportunity to win and keep a major league job.

If we can get three good starting pitchers out of this group, THEN we can talk about top shelf free agent pitchers.

I agree completely with this take. Pick up some outfield help and maybe a SS or 2B but let's roll with the pitchers that finished 2021. Let's see what we have before we go all in on the FA pool.

I haven't followed his situation too closely, but isn't there a chance Kershaw will miss a decent amount of next season? I'd absolutely be on board with signing him to a 2-3 year deal then stashing him on the IL to give as many starts as possible to the young guys. Bring Kershaw along slowly and as soon as he's ready, give him a few starts to prove he's still got it before unloading him at the trade deadline. Maybe they could even use some of that newfound cash to pay his salary in return for more/better prospects. Wouldn't be the worst way they could spend that money.

My humor doesn't always come through. Probably because I'm not very funny.

Re: Kershaw.

I don't necessarily think we should sign him, just making the point he wouldn't cost draft picks, he is a home town boy and often rumored to come back home.

I have no idea what he is worth or that the Rangers would find any value in him... other than he is from HP.

Mets QO'd Thor. Will be interesting to see what he chooses. He really ought to take it.
