To be fair on the Ohtani debate, none us knew previously that he had a UCL issue. So now him signing elsewhere is a little easier to swallow. But sure, I still would've signed him. Obviously has a lot of potential at the plate and on the mound, but there now more question marks on the mound with the UCL issue.
True we didn't. The teams were disclosed the info about the UCL prior to bidding, AFAIK, which I'm sure you knew.

I don't have issue with anyone signing him, even the Rangers. It would be worth realizing that with the $20M posting fee, it does make him an expensive item to add if he is 3 years out due to injury.

Regarding the plate. He had ankle surgery, as well (which was known). So, now you have a pitcher with elbow issues... a hitter with ankle surgery who is a projection to play DH.

Rangers trade for OF Carlos Tocci who was taken by the White Sox in the Rule V draft. He's 22 and apparently a good defensive centerfielder. Not sure what this means (if anything) as for what happens with Choo.

I'm guessing this may impact DeShields more than Choo?

It sounds like this guy's skill set is more DeShields and a lot less 2018 Choo so probably more chance for him to take DeShield's slot.

This guy won't factor into the DH discussion so that buffets Choo, some.

I think if Choo is going to get traded, Choo will get traded regardless.

Anyone that takes 3 seconds to Google "Carlos Tocci" will know he has nothing common with Choo, other than being a baseball player.

I'm just hopefully a move like this means either trading for an outfielder and/or part of a package to get rid of Choo.

By the way, the Angels' starting pitching last year had a 4.38 ERA, 6th best in the AL. That's with Garrett Richards hurt most of the year.

They need to get better but they were hardly a disaster.

And even though you claim to not want to make this a Halos thread... you will find additional obscure points to make irrelevant to what I said and claim I said them, with multiple posts, further making this more of a Halos thread.

4 so far.

Sorry, I don't totally understand the second paragraph. You're hoping this means they want outfield help and may trade for it? That Tocci might be part of a trade package?

Sorry. Tocci won't be part of any package. He will either play for the Rangers as a reserve or be sent packing. I'm hoping that maybe this means the Rangers can send Delino/prospects for say Yelich, or something like that. I just think adding Tocci and/or trading for someone like Yelich will give the Rangers more flexibility to basically give Choo away...

MLB teams, including the Rangers, knew, and those MLB teams, including the Rangers, wanted him.

Re: Ohtani, the Angels didn't do anything pretty much any other team would have done.

No kidding. "none us knew previously that he had a UCL issue" means nobody on this board or outside the inner circles of MLB front offices.

Try to have a point next time.

I don't think the point---it is silly for DA94 or someone else to go after the Angels organization for signing Ohtani---is obscure.

Ah well.

Gotcha. Yeah, very well could go that way if Tocci impresses.

Of course it is.

Our in-season threads are 1000x better in terms of sheer entertainment, so why wouldn't our off-season.

Did you catch our post-season World Series Champion thread? Epic!

Seems like Angels are back in "we're gonna throw money at a bunch of different players that don't have a natural fit here and surely it will all come together" mode.

Cozart had a pretty good year last year, made the all-star game and hit quite a few HR's. Would need to see the terms of his deal before questioning this deal.

The back half of 2017, the Angels were rolling out Luis Valbuena at 3rd base.

He's a MLB journeyman who hit .199 with a .727 OPS and a -0.5 dWAR.

I'm not sure Zack Cozart will be an All-Star regular, but he plays good defense and obviously brings potential at the plate.

Writeup I saw said Cozart to 3B, Valbuiena to 1B (possibly platoon). Cozart had a career year. Will be interesting if he can repeat that, and in a new league. Angels are definitely being aggressive and going for it.

So what did they need more? A 2B'er or a 3B'er?

Or SP?

So the net is...
We lose: Darvish, Cashner and Gomez
We add: Minor, Fister and a Rule V guy

So, Cole Hamels, Martin Perez, Doug Fister, Mike Minor, and Matt Moore...

...that's what they're going to roll with?

Surely they think they can convince a good pitcher to come and try a 6-man rotation or they're aiming to move one of those guys to the bullpen, right?
