I'd be fine moving on from Darvish. Sometimes people just need a change of scenery.

So what's yalls obsession with the Angels?

It is the off season and they are in our division?

And the Rangers seem to be sitting out this off-season

What?

http://www.espn.com/mlb/team/transactions/_/name/tex/texas-rangers

And I don't believe that link includes the Fister and Martin deals
'll break this down with the following idea:

age<27: Expect a better season

27-33: Expect relatively peak

33<age: Expect decline

Pos: 2017 - to - 2018
IF
1B: Napoli (36)\Gallo (24) - to - Gallo (25): Up
2B: Odor (23) - to - Odor (24): Up
3B: Beltre (38) - to - Beltre (39): Down
SS: Andrus (29) - to - Andrus (30): Same
C: Chirinos (33) - to - Chirinos (34): Down

OF:
LF: Gallo (24) to Calhoun (23): Tossup
CF: Gomez (32) to DeShields\Rule V Guy
RF: Mazara (22): Up
DH: Choo (35): Down

SP:
Hamels (33, 24GS, 4.20, 1.20): Down
Perez (26, 32GS, 4.82, 1.54): Up
Darvish (31, 22GS, 4.01, 1.17) to Matt Moore (28, 31GS, 5.52, 1.532) @ $9M (option for 2019 ($10M)
Cashner (31, 28GS, 3.40, 1.32) to Doug Fister (33, 15GS, 4.88, 1.384) @ 1yr/$3.5M
Martinez (27, 17GS, 5.66, 1.37) to Mike Minor (29, 0GS, 65G, 2.55, 1.017 @ 3yr/$28M

Darvish made $11M, so Moore is a savings of $2M.
Cashner made $10M, so Fister is a savings of $6.5M
Martinez made $517K, so Minor is an increase of $7.8M
We'll call it a wash on costs.

You don't blow $9M on Moore and his 5.52 ERA, if you're signing Darvish.

Man AP, I wish I could go with your predictions, but they've just been off. Hope I'm wrong.

Not that the Rangers need another LH bat, but Adrian Gonzalez should be available soon for relatively cheap after he gets dumped following the Dodgers - Braves mutual unloading of bad contracts.

https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/dodgers-acquire-matt-kemp-massive-salary-relief-in-five-player-trade-with-braves/

And with both A. Gonzalez and Kemp likely on the verge of becoming DH candidates in the AL, the odds of unloading Choo somewhere to be a DH just got that much lower.

Surprised this hasn't been posted. Awesome gift by Hamels

My wife told me about it last night amidst me cleaning out email.

I hadn't had a chance to read about it, myself.

I have a buddy\co-worker from Philly and when Texas traded for Hamels, he called to assure me Texas got a great guy. He gushed about him.

IIRC, Hamels has a special needs kid?! I seem to recall my buddy indicating part of his willingness to be traded to Texas was Hamels felt his kid would have access to more options here.

Just looking up... I didn't realize Hamels' wife was a contestant on Survivor.

Really cool of Hamels, and I don't think Survivor is all his wife was in...

I was certainly not expecting that...

Back to baseball...

Tommy Hunter signed 2yr/$18M. 30 year old reliever.

Looking at the few signings, so far, and Darvish is going to rake... 6yr/$30M per?

I thought it was getting late into the off-season, without more pieces being signed. Then, I looked at the going rate, and it is crazy.

Santana was projected 3/$45M and got 3/$60M
Mike Minor was projected 4/$28M and got 3/$28M
Chatwood: 3/$20M got 3/$38M

I wish I could talk my boys into becoming pitchers.

Jon Daniels says #Rangers have no meeting planned with Yu Darvish, whose price supposedly remains out of reach.

Well, apparently the Rangers have signed ABD to a minor league deal.

Does this pull you out of getting a big name pitcher... or make your efforts more aggressive?

I say, it makes you pull back.

Just WAY too many holes. Pull a Marlins and stack the farm.

Sell Andrus.
Sell Hamels.
Sell Gallo.
Sell everyone you can.

Make a run in 2-3 years.

Martin Perez possibly missing the first few weeks of the season isn't going to change the direction you take this season.

Didn't Perez miss some time last year because he hurt his thumb in a hotel door. Between him and Derek Holland "tripping over his dog" we really need to find some smarter pitchers

It may not affect the direction you take management of personnel, but 5 GS from your #2 SP, in a rotation of
Hamels
Perez
and...

Crap, I forgot whom we've penciled in.

Oh yeah...
28 year old Matt Moore (5.52 ERA in 31 GS/2017)
29 year old Mike Minor (0 GS in MLB since 2014)
33 year old Fister (4.88 ERA in 15GS/2017)
<TBD>

That is a rotation like 1996 (Hill/3.63, D Oliver/4.66, Pavilk/5.19, Witt/5.41, K Gross/5.22)

I predict a SP ERA over 5.00 for the season.

I'm in despair.

So a rotation good enough to make the playoffs. Now the Rangers just need Odor, Mazara, and Beltre to start raking like Pudge, Palmer and a juiced JuanGone. That '96 team had a +129 run differential.

Sadly... that is where MLB is headed. Oh yeah... I see testing is up, but I'm not buying now, anymore than I bought then.

Maybe I just underestimate how hard it is to play MLB.
mhayden
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm not saying the team is a contender.

I'm just saying missing a handful of starts from Martin Perez isn't going to (and shouldn't) shift the strategy.

Winning the Ohtani sweepstakes and signing a Yu or Arrieta to complement was about the only real roadmap to being a contender out of the gate. With that not happening I think Texas has made some shrewd moves -- they've gone out and got a Minor and a Moore so that the rotation can be set if need-be, and if they can land a big fish - great.

Otherwise let those guys play out the first 4 months and see if you've found some diamonds in the rough. If so, make a deadline deal to contend. If not, sell at the deadline.

The gap between Texas and Houston paper is too big this season with Hamels/Perez as your #1/#2. So no sense in spending big chunks of change to compete for a wildcard.

If we find ourselves in the wildcard hunt - great. But I have no desire to spend like Anaheim and still at best have to play a 1-game wildcard match to decide the season.

I'd like to plead the Rangers' case for Darvish.

Wow, I just spent far too long catching up on this thread... Took some weird turns there with the talk about Angels attendance.

That being said, I have kept up slightly with the Rangers this offseason (not near as much as recruiting under Jimbo). I am really hoping Matt Moore returns to form here from when he stifled our elite offensive lineup in both the 2010 and 2011 ALDS. Still looking for a "splash" hire though to really peak my interest. Otherwise, I will be out of it by the All-Star break and just waiting for Aggie football to start up again.

ASB? Weren't you a Rangers STH at one point?

Yeah, I had a mini 10 game plan last year. I always keep up with the team (even in the dreadful 2014 injury-plagued season) but I would shift my attention back to Aggie football this year if they are well out of it by the ASB.

I'm sure it was low budget, so why not. But would like to see some more moves to help field a competitive big league team in 2018. Also reacquired Paolo Espino as well. LINK to story on both.
