I'm not entirely disappointed, but JD is going to need to make some magic at the winter meetings.

Also just saw that Stanton would now accept a trade to the Astros (along with the Cubs, Dodgers, and Yankees). That would be a real kick in the d if he somehow ends up there.

Either way this team isn't winning the division next year and the front office keeps trying to put on band aids.

Like the Fister deal. The Minor deal is puzzling. Would rather see them load up on someone legit vs throwing $10 mill at guys like Minor, Nap, etc, especially signing up for 3 years on a guy with a significant shoulder problems in his recent past. Elbow history doesnt bother me. Shoulder history is concerning.

The Angels...

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Also consider the Angels:

OF:
Justin Upton (30-R) - 152 G, .273, 35 HR, 14 SB <- Just signed 5yr/$106M
Mike Trout (26-R) - 114 G, .306, 33 HR, 22 SB <- owed 3yr/$34.1M per
Kole Calhoun (30-L) - 155 G, .244, 19 HR, 5 SB <- owed 2yr/$9M per (avg) + Option for 2020

DH:
Albert Pujols (37-R) - 149 G, .241, 23 HR, 3SB <- owed 4 yr @ $28.5M per (avg)

1B:
Cron (27) is Arb1 - 100G, .248, 16 HR
Marte (26) is a serf

Pujols has almost no value to trade. I can't see him moving to 1B (he had 23 AB @ 1st in 2017).

You just signed Upton for 5 years @ $20M per. Trout isn't going anywhere.

Calhoun have trade value at 30?

I'm not sure where the ABs will come from.

From a rotation perspective...

Listed are the top teams. Baltimore usually sells their money, instead of signing players.

5. Maitan (SS) - $4.25M
8. Gutierrez (C) - $3.53M
T16. Yunior Severino (SS) - $1.9M
T-27. Juan Contreras (RHP) - $1.2M
32. Yenci Pena (SS) - $1.05M
T33. Yefri del Rosario (RHP) - $1M
T33. Livan Soto (SS) - $1M

And Korean Jihwan Bae (SS) - $300K

$1.94M (Marlins - what they gave NYY+ $200K that doesn't count against pool for Braves players) would seem a floor to get at least 3 of the Top 6. Say the Yanks take Ohtani. The Rangers, Minnesota and Pittsburgh (in no order) would get the Top 3 on the list, if they wanted. Do you go quality or quantity? Let Minn and Pitt take Maitan and Gutierrez, then take the rest of the players you want?

Some updates:

5. Maitan (SS) - $4.25M - Halos for $2.2M
8. Gutierrez (C) - $3.53M - Signed by Philly or $550K
T16. Yunior Severino (SS) - $1.9M - Signed by Twins for $2.5M
T-27. Juan Contreras (RHP) - $1.2M
32. Yenci Pena (SS) - $1.05M
T33. Yefri del Rosario (RHP) - $1M - Royals for $650K
T33. Livan Soto (SS) - $1M - Anaheim for $850K

And Korean Jihwan Bae (SS) - $300K

Crazy... for Anaheim to sign Maitan for $2.2M and Soto for $1M... what did Ohtani sign for?!

Rangers are running out of people to spend Int'l money on.

What a terrible off-season. But hey... we got a new stadium.

That will be interesting. 10 more years, or so... at like $28M per (avg)... less whatever the Marlins throw in.

We can hope Joey Gallo finds his MVP swing.

So Jeter buys the Marlins and sends his best player back to the Yankees.

Don't forget about Sanchez. I guess the Yankees just want to hit all of the home runs in 2018.

In fairness that contract was absolutely horrific for the Marlins. The trade partner is suspect, but one way or the other they weren't gonna have any kind of financial freedom if they had to pay out that whole thing

It was also a 3rd attempt to trade after Stanton refused to waive his no-trade to SF and SL.

Yeah, a guy with $300 mill committed to him and a no trade that he wasn't being flexibke on equals a very short list of options, with the Yankees being a natural option.

The Marlins were in a bad spot with this and were never going to get something truly great in a trade. They had very little negotiating power, for reasons going back to the previous owner.

Derek Jeter probably isn't going to be a good owner but this result seems about right given thr way Stanton's contract was structured and written.
DallasAg 94
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The #1 thing for the Marlins to do was dump Stanton and as much salary as possible.

If was a foolish contract from their previous owner, in an attempt to gain suitors to sell the team.

In return, Marlins get:
Starlin Castro
Jorge Guzman - Goes from the #9 prospect of NYY to #1 prospect of Florida.
Jose Devers - Some kid the Yanks picked up in 2017.
Marlins send $30M in cash if Stanton does not opt out in 2020.

Guzman is likely going to be a Rule V guy in 2 years that has to be put on the 40, if he isn't there already. He originally signed with Houston in 2015, so time is ticking and he pitched in A- for the Yanks in 2017.

I predict Starlin Castro gets shipped, as well. I think that is where the Marlins will get the most value out of trading Stanton.

I was hoping the Rangers might consider a salary swap with Choo going to the Marlins, in a similar fashion. Marlins will eat some Stanton salary, taking on Choo, and then flip Choo. I don't know that the Rangers would have taken on as much salary as SF, SL, LAD or NYY were willing to do.

I think this also opens the door for the Rangers to now move Profar. Hopefully we can get a couple lower level prospects that project highly.

I don't think this trade reflects on Jeter or his ties to the Yanks. He tried to move Stanton to either SF or SL, first. This could be a situation where the Yanks are helping him out, in taking the money off the Marlins books.

The Marlins are really in shambles. Left for 2018 - Volquez is owed $13M, and Wei-Yin Chen is owed $10M. Chen is also owed $20M in 2019. Neither will likely pitch in 2018. Volq had TJ in August.

If the 9th prospect playing at A- ball from the Yankess instantly becomes your best prospect, you likely have a terrible farm system. No?

To NY to take Castro's spot? That was one of the first things I thought of when I heard that Castro was part of this deal.

DallasAg 94

How would you rebuild the Marlins given the situation?

First, I would sell everything I can, and get as many prospects as I could. The lower level players with higher ceilings would be a premium.

Second, I would pick up as many Rule V guys as I could. Not sure the rules there. However, if you can find 4 or 5 Rule V guys that are 1-2 years away... you can suck while they play MLB, instead of AA or AAA.

Third, that would give you a great position for Draft, ala Houston Astros.

Fourth, I would sign as many cheap guys looking for work, that don't want to go to Japan. Guys you might be able to unload at the trade deadline. Cashner types.

It will take 3-4... maybe 5 years, but if you don't have attendance and you are broke, it will take some time to build.

They'll be quite fortunate to find one player in the Rule V draft that can contribute in any real way.

Bringing in multiple Rule V players will help them tank but not much else.

They have to draft well, and sign international kids well. Plain and simple, hard to see them finding success any other way.

Sucks for Marlins fans; they've been jerked around for like 25 years.

Hard to feel sorry for fans, a city, that have experienced TWO world series titles, especially when that city doesn't deserve a franchise in the first place.

I don't know if NY, but somewhere. I think Castro will be moved by Florida, so Profar maybe to Florida (not for Castro, but after Castro is traded)?!

The Yanks obviously need an IF now, so that is good.

Reading about all this Santana interest? Only way I see that happening is if we get rid of Choo. We already have a log jam at DH/ 1B.
