I would have thought it was Hank Greenberg, but when you lose parts of 5 seasons to a war, it hurts your career numbers I guess.

This team is horrendous

Has to be getting close to time to can Mills. Maybe they'll let him coach out the road swing since they've already got his return flight booked and don't want to have to pay a re-booking fee. Every penny counts...

Lets talk about 2013 and contracts. Lets start with outfielders.

We have right now..

Martinez
Schafer
Bogusevic
Maxwell
Downs

all listed as OF. We also have Snyder and Buck in AAA.

Everyone but Martinez has no guaranteed contract next year. I say cut everyone except Maxwell and Schafer (we traded too much to not give him one more year). We have some young talent in our system, and guys between 23 and 26 years old who we need to give a chance to.. to find either trade value or organizational value. Guys like Barnes, F-Mart, Shuck, Goebbert, Bailey, Hogue.

Then we have the guys still considered decent prospects like Wates, Springer, Santana, Muren, Epps, and Hernandez.

Thats 12 guys in 3 leagues. And they cant move up too much because of guys like Snyder, Buck, and Locke. Cut the old guys, move the young guys up.

Anyone disagree? Bogusevic, Downs, Snyder, and Buck are doing nothing for this team or its future.. and they have nothing of value. They were helpful when our system was void of talent.. but that time is gone.
Mr.Bond

I don't disagree

Thinking about the infield and catchers..

The Astros have this right now..

Castro
Snyder
Corporan
Wallace
Johnson
Altuve
Lowrie
Gonzalez
Moore
Bixler
Dominguez

all as guys who have or will have played in the majors in 2012. Then you have..

Paredes
Sanchez
Hessman
Powell

all as guys old enough to be MLB or have already played some MLB.

Every single one of them except Snyder is on a 1 year contract. I expect them to resign Lowrie. Snyder has an option.. hopefully its not used.

Here is what the fate of these guys should be..

Castro - keep
Snyder - cut
Corporan = cut
Wallace - keep
Johnson - toss up (leaning toward trade piece or cut)
Altuve - keep
Lowrie - keep (to trade next deadline)
Gonzalez - keep
Moore - cut
Bixler - cut
Dominguez - keep
Paredes - keep
Sanchez - cut
Hessman - cut
Powell - keep

That leaves you with a pool of Castro, Wallace, Altuve, Lowrie, Gonzalez, Dominguez, Paredes, Powell.. with Singleton, Hinze, Jose Martinez, Kreke, Orloff, Simunic, Villar, J. Fernandez, Garcia, B. Wallace, and Wikoff as possibilities for MLB or AAA guys. Then you have other prospects like Heath, E. Castro, Meyer, Mier, Moon, Nash, Todd, Duffy, Fontana, and Deshields all as guys who should be in the top 3 teams of the system.
mazag08
How long do you want to ignore this user?
So all in all.. the position players to open the season should be..

C: Castro, Powell
1B/DH: Wallace, Singleton
2B: Altuve
SS: Lowrie, Gonzalez
3B: Paredes, Johnson (maybe)
RF: Banres, F-Mart
CF: Schafer, Maxwell
LF: Martinez

And yes I expect us to keep 13-14 position players as we wont have a coach wasting relievers, nor a pitcher batting.

no sense starting that major league service clock if you know you aren't winning
mazag08
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Except alot of the guys in the system.. Shuck, Bailey, Goebbert, Wates, Muren, etc. are pushing 24 or 25. Start the major league clock to see if they are worth it. The ones who are you keep or use as trade bait. The others will weed themselves out.

There is a reason those 24-25 year old guys are still part of the farm system for the worst team in baseball.

'stros (33-56) are in San Diego (36-54) for 4 games. Maybe they can do a little damage against the woeful padres. But that is a big ballpark.

and regarding the astros 0-9 record in extra innings...some of that has to speak to the poor strategy & decisions by the manager. A lot of teams run out of bullpen arms once the 10th, 11th, and 12th innings roll around

With the way Mills cycles through pitchers playing his stupid one AB per pitcher matchup games, we're out of arms by the 8th or 9th. He's absolutely wretched when it comes to in game strategy.
W
How long do you want to ignore this user?
well, the 'stros have managed to split the first 2 games so far in SD. Altuve was the reason for Monday's win
W
How long do you want to ignore this user?
ouch, Wandy roughed up this afternoon. Barring a late inning comeback the 'stros are sinking to 34-58

This season is shaping up beautifully. By the trade deadline, we should be safely in last place and headed toward the top of next summer's draft again. It'll also help with the new international FA budget (at least I think it's implemented next year).
Ag_07
How long do you want to ignore this user?
With Lowrie on the DL, Meyers being absymal lately, and Wandy not pitching like a top of the rotation guy, the probability of us making a solid trade are dwindling. Hope Lunhow can get something done.

Brett Myers...just another bad free agent signing by Ed Wade. In 3 years Myers is 21-26 with a 3.78 ERA and 19 saves.

Just another case of a player in a contract year (2010) going all out and having a very good season...and then the GM gets suckered...offers big contract...and the player goes in the tank after getting his money.

Myers will have made $21 million on the 'stros' two 100-loss teams.

I believe the astros have a $3 million buyout with Myers at the end of the season, so he will be off the books one way or another

1-hit shutout tonight to fall to 34-59.

astros are 2-13 in July. Scored 36 runs in 15 games. Altuve is 3 for 28 since the all-star break.

probably getting outslugged & swept in Arizona next

Hubert J. Farnsworth

Barnes has been hitting the ball extremely well in AAA. There's really no reason to keep him down there when Bogusevic is struggling to crack .230 with 5 HRs

Saw the Astros are going to try Paredes in the OF some. That would probably be the best place for him. Be interesting to see if he could make it work in RF.

The Astros and Blue Jays have completed a ten-player trade, the teams announced. The Astros obtain seven players from Toronto: Major Leaguers Francisco Cordero and Ben Francisco, minor leaguers Joe Musgrove, Asher Wojciechowski, David Rollins and Carlos Perez, and a player to be named. The Astros send Brandon Lyon, J.A. Happ and David Carpenter to Toronto in the trade.

“Once again we are adding depth to our minor league system with quality young players," GM Jeff Luhnow said in a team press release. "We really feel this will help us moving forward and are extremely excited about the players we’ve added to our organization.”

Cordero and Francisco don't have assurances of staying with the Astros beyond 2012. Cordero, 37, has a 5.77 ERA with 6.8 K/9 and 3.7 BB/9 in 34 1/3 innings this year. He signed a one-year deal with a base salary of $4.5MM before the season. Francisco, 30, earns $1.54MM this year and will be arbitration eligible again this coming offseason. He posted a .240/.296/.380 batting line in Toronto and battled a hamstring injury, so he could be considered a non-tender candidate.

the J.A. Happ era is over. Another failed move by Ed Wade.

so 2 years later what do the astros have to show for the Berkman and Oswalt deadline deals?
