Strikers get away with those types of plays all the time in the act of shooting but with VAR, a defender gets a PK and a yellow?

Well France probably deserved those 3 points but I would not want to face Norway in the Round of 16. That Australia loss now looms large since the runners up in Group A (likely Norway) face runners up in Group C (Brazil, Italy, Australia).

I don't know the rules. Does it matter if she got the ball first? Because if it matters then why the hell did they give the ref that angle to look at instead of the angle that clearly showed the defender getting the ball first?

The ball is irrelevant. You can get the ball first and still be guilty of a foul. Yes she touched the ball first. She then followed through and kicked the opponent in the knee and did so with her studs exposed. It was with force and could have been considered so forceful to be excessive and a red card.

If the contact is low (foot to foot) for me that's a no call. That's soccer and that happens all the time. It's the elevated studs two foot off the ground into the knee with force that makes the call. For me, it's an easy PK and yellow. It's orange and could be red.

I'm only implying that getting the ball first impacted the trajectory of her follow through. I think it was a harsh penalty.

This and what agvet12 said. it was painfully obvious how terrible Thailand was and the US took advantage. zero issue with the scoring, nor the celebrations. but against better teams, most of that **** wont fly. Sloppy passes, bad touches that would not have lead to shots on goal, let alone goals scored against a team that knew what the hell they were doing. Chile aint doing dick against the US, but Sweden may punch the team in the mouth if they allow the scoreline to go to their heads.


So you are saying we aren't gonna score 13 every game?

Another offside where the offensive player doesnt touch the ball but "affects the play." Such a dumb and impossible to define interpretation. Every player on the field could "affect the play"

That part of the law is subjective. I thought she affected the play because if she is not there, it's an easy save for the keeper.

Kerr was offside when the ball was played and in the area when the Brazilian player heads it into her own net. VAR reviewing now.

I agree with you but its an impossible call for the refs to make consistently and without VAR. Just bring back 'the no offside on deflection' interpretation and be done with it

Probably? Unless your keeper has a direct bead on that ball they're not calling the defender off, in pretty much any situation a defender that deep in the box is going to try to clear that.

Agreed, though even with that you'll occasionally get an attacker who's genuinely interfering with the keeper.

Agreed, though even with that you'll occasionally get an attacker who's genuinely interfering with the keeper.
I do think her position might have impacted where the keeper was, however this was a complete failure by the defense to communicate. With proper communication this does not happen regardless of the "Offsides".
