I'm in my mid 50's and I remember rivalry games like Pitt/Penn St and the Nebraska/OU games and they were always featured games. I don't hear the media every year talking about bringing these games back but they do when it comes to your game with Texas. Maybe the other games that I mentioned have been off the radar too long and your game hasn't?
I know my comments are going to draw angst but in all honesty I don't remember your Thanksgiving game ever being available on television prior to cable. When they finally started showing them it really wasn't that big of a game in other parts of the country and I certainly don't recall anyone that changed their daily routine to watch it. I understand that in Texas it is a big game but in other parts of the country it wasn't a high profile game. When Sherrill was your coach is really the first time I remember watching the game. The "Wizard of Oz" was usually shown every year on Thanksgiving night.
I know I would miss the Ole Miss game if we didn't play them so I can see why many of you want the game back. The thing that really bothers me is that many of you have forgotten how you were treated by Texas why the hell would you want to subject yourself to it so soon after escaping their grasp? I have no doubt that down the road you'll play them again and more than likely in a bowl game but enjoy the time away from them and let it "stew" because it will be a much bigger game and there will be blood spilled.
I started following Texags when realignment started in 2010. When we added South Carolina and Arkansas I was not a fan of it but there were rumors that Texas would possibly be joining and many others felt the same way and there was a collective sigh of relief when they didn't. In 2010 when you decided to stay and not join us I wasn't surprised and I always remembered how TT & Baylor gained membership in the Big 12 and the politics that were involved.
Then a year later the chatter started again and I figured the politics would again play in to it but was surprised that they actually didn't and no one saw what was coming. I believe to this day that Bowtie and your power brokers got their ducks in a row during that time. It caught everyone off guard and it was like you threw a stun grenade in a room and by the time the Big 12 members regained consciousness it was too late to react. Your administration neutered the state legislature it was absolutely brilliant and made them look inept. How many university administrations could have pulled that off?
So glad we finally got you and Mizzou as members and hope that we never look west again for members.
What you have to realize is that many Ags have to work with arrogant tsip (tshirt) fans and just want to play so they could talk smack at the water cooler. I'm sure that had we won the last game almost all of the Ags would want them to rot forever and just sit on scoreboard. The problem is that it is an emotional argument rather than a smart one.
There is also a group of Ags that might have Stockholm syndrome regarding the sips. Their argument is mainly, "we need this game or this game is good for the state of Texas." Again this is an emotional argument because they don't get the furry feeling they would get from playing Texas.
Any enlightened Ag would tell you to hell with "what's good for the state of Texas." The good thing during realignment would have been for us to let the tsips either drag us to the PAC-16 or bend over for all the demands of the lhn. They would also know that we DO NOT NEED THE GAME AT ALL TO BE SUCCESSFUL. "What's good for the for the state of Texas" is code for "what's good for the Texas sports media" which is code for "what's good for the tsips."
Also the poster above is correct that the media would much rather have a great tsip team than they would have a great A&M team, all because it fits their view of the "way cfb should be." So that is why the media gives the rivalry attention, because things are "not right" and they see our series as a means of making them relevant again.
If you do want to see about the politics regarding our move in 2010/2011, you should watch the Texags documentary "SEC Ready". They go in depth on how careful our administration had to step to keep it from being political(I.e. avoiding Austin as the battleground for realignment). It shows just how entangled and ridiculous our state politics are.
You've been a great poster here in the zoo, I think staff should gift it to ya.
