Great proactive thinking, great thread, and in hindsight .... spot on accurate.

The tu dominance ship in the State of Texas has sailed. It's not coming back. It sunk at sea.

Jbkaschke - i seem to recall a lot of spin when we played. It was there when we won too.

"You managed to turn it around for them." Sure. We did that. Not that anything has turned around for them except.......hey, what do you know....good PR and perception. They've generally always had this advantage and we did that?
The only way to turn the media spin is to kick the **** out of them on the field. Head to head. Can't really say they are passing us if we kill them on the field. So, by not playing them, we've let the media take over. That was their plan all along.

Congrats!!!
It's a rivalry game. Stretches of dominance by either team will be few and far between.

...and that was never their plan.

For Pete's sake, you had an Old Rivalries sip poster junkie who spent hours upon hours defending the internet honor of all things longhorn......end up being the back judge that called the targeting penalty on Trent Hunter in 2011. And you want to sign that game up again because it might sell a few tickets and make a good story? Are you that selfish and narrow minded?

From OB 6/4/10:

quote:
A&M and OU to the SEC without us is a worst case scenario. We can't join the SEC, but we can't let them (especially A&M) join either. Texas's great run will come to an end at some point and we'll have to rebuild. Trying to rebuild with A&M a part of the best conference in football while we're on the outside looking in is a situation we'd be wise to avoid at all costs.

When the rights expire in 7 years, could OU be #15, and tu is forced to the PAC with no LHN?

I can report that the Mustang is still around and doing well.

Great thread! Great story! As for me, I always watched this game pulling for the maroon and white. Maybe the game didn't mean much to the rest of the country but it did to anyone connected to the SWC.

I once heard Frank Broyles speak at a fundraiser around 1996. He mentioned how A&M had been THE target and THE big prize in 1991 but they just couldn't pull the trigger. In 2011 after the move to the SEC he said "I would've crawled to College Station to get A&M in the SEC" I think he always knew texas would've been a fish out of water here because the SEC only does what is best for the whole of the SEC. Jeff Long gave up LSU at Thanksgiving which was the right thing to do if you look at the big picture. A&M had to have a marquee game that week. When y'all get tired of the 1000 mile trip USCe remember that was the trade for LSU.

As far as playing them again, it would get big ratings now because the whole SEC would have a deep interest now. I would personally hate to see it happen. Nobody hates them more than we do. No, not even A&M! I can't count the games we lost to them because of holding calls at just the right time or non calls on face masks and PFs. That sounds like I'm making excuses but the old A&M fans know this to be true.

In contrast to Spreadsheet, here is some Longhorn hubris from 2010: Conference Realignment: Will Texas A&M Play The Sucker?

Quote:

A&M venturing off on its own to the SEC would be the best thing that could possibly happen to Texas. And one of the worst to A&M. Imagine, for a moment, that the Aggies do just that, and tell Texas that there will be no solidarity pact and they are going to head off to the SEC on their own. What result?

Well, all of the sudden, Texas is free to join the Big 10. The "Tech problem" just disappears overnight, because if the Aggies want to go to the SEC, they have to band with UT and let the Longhorns go to the Big 10. A unified split allows each to go its separate way, and eliminates an opposition coalition standing in the way of Texas venturing to the Big 10.

Only an Aggie (or SEC predator) could think this a good idea. Whatever gains the Aggies enjoyed from SEC TV dollars, would be easily matched--and likely surpassed--by the huge revenues the University of Texas would enjoy in a suddenly monstrous Big Ten Network. Not only that, but as the Aggies left to join a middling conference in terms of academics and R&D dollars, UT immediately upgrades to the nation's premier conference in terms of academics and R&D dollars. Essentially, the Aggies would be taking a giant step sideways, into a football conference they're unlikely to succeed in, while liberating Texas to become even bigger, richer, and stronger than it already is.

Such a narcissistic and delusional fan base.

Quote:

They would, in essence, be choosing to open up an enormous gulf between themselves and Texas--one that cannot open up nearly so wide when the schools are tethered together in the same conference.

LOL! The only prediction they got right--just not in the direction they were thinking.

Don't miss them at all.

This thread never fails to deliver.

The thing that cracks me up the most after another reread, and the part that perfectly sums up sip attitude, was this little gem from p.1

Quote:

A&M has appealed to Louisiana kids in the past, and one has to believe they could do OK recruiting in Missippissi too.

We are talking about basically country boys from most smaller cities.

Lol. Yeah. Look at our rosters from basically the last 40 years. Just LOADED with farm boys in denim overalls from Vernon and Lindale and Granger.

Just encapsulates that sip arrogance we all know and love. Idiots. Let em rot.

Thanks for pulling this up, spreadsheetag. I must be bored because I enjoyed reading through it. Funny how things turn out much differently than anyone thought. And tu has REALLY been knocked down a few pegs. It's much clearer when reading though this why they're now desperately whining each year to play us again.

I've got news for the sips....your biggest rival always was A&M. It wasn't always the best game on schedule especially in years where we weren't competitive, but it was the biggest rivalry. Proof exists to this day - go to any sip board and count the threads about good old A&M. Then count the threads about OU. There are none.

Further proof exists in any thread talking about Ou/A&M cotton bowl. 95% of sips rooting for their "Biggest rival"? Total BS! See sips, it's not what you say that counts...it's what you do. You guys had a great rivalry, one of the greatest in the land and used "not our rival" in attempt to belittle. Enjoy your "big" games at DKR in the future, idiots.

We for sure should have moved the previous year when the majority of the Aggies wanted to go and administration held us back stupidly.

Living here in the middle of SEC country has allowed my wife and I to attend ball games fairly regularly at Auburn Alabama Mississippi State Mississippi Vanderbilt then there are the basketball games and the baseball playoffs in Alabama that's not a very good location place and that it's out of the way from any place might as well be on a desert island someplace good facility but it's isolated need to play in Nashville at the Vanderbilt Stadium lot better if they don't have the drum porn theater

Do you mean 2012? Johnny's first year?

2011 was our last year in the Big12 and we were 6-6 with losses to 5 ranked teams and beat Northweatern in the bowl game with Tim DeRuyter as Interim HC

1. If we had stayed in the big12 then we don't beat bama and they go undefeated and play undefeated notre dame for the title. Even if we had gone unbeaten in the big12 they don't jump us over Nd

2. Mike Sherman Didn't want to go to the SEC and do might have still been our head coach in 2012

Sherman wasn't winning an NC, and he might have played showers over Johnny

3. Without the move to the SEC, the team doesn't become battle tested against a big12 schedule like they did against an SEC schedule in 2012

4. There's no guarantee we go unbeaten be a big12 schedule anyway
