There were what appeared to be regulars standing at the door. One guy came up to us and said he thinks they got broken into last night - he said it happens monthly.
My former neighbor owns the Maple Leaf Pub. He said the same thing -- keeps a glass guy on speed dial.
Well those Canadians can get rowdy. Especially during the NHL playoffs or if Tim Horton's takes too long to make their coffee...

This isn't California. We shouldn't have to live like this. These business owners shouldn't have to take these losses, shrug their shoulders and say, "Oh, well... it's the new cost of doing business."

But, we in the City of Houston DO live in California.

We have the same soft on crime policies as that Commie hellhole. If a business owner were to rightfully defend his property and livelihood, HE, not the criminal, would be brought up on charges. The business owners know this, and the criminals know that even if they get arrested, they'll be back out on the street tomorrow.

https://www.fox26houston.com/news/31-year-old-ex-con-free-from-jail-bond-when-he-allegedly-stabbed-his-neighbor-death

Multiple time felon and regular resident of the state's fine prison facilities out on bond for burglary and felony weapons possession. Kills neighbor.
Quote:

Last month, police say Briscoe went to Trevino's house in the 6000 block of Sugar Field Lane in Katy and stabbed him to death. The two lived on the same street.

"He's in a wheelchair at the victims house, and something happened. We don't know what happened, but obviously tragedy occurred because Jacob Trevino ends up getting stabbed to death," said Kahan.

"A witness had seen him fleeing the scene, because their description was a man in a wheelchair getting into a black sedan and driving off."

Judge Ramona Franklin and Magistrate Courtney St. Julian are responsible for an ex con murdering a neighbor by stabbing him to death.
So is the DA for not requesting a bond. These people need to be tar and feathered - it's the only way they get the message.
The DA should not have to request a bond. Judge should do that automatically. If the bond is too low, then the DA should get involved and file a motion to have the bond raised.

Where I was DA--in the sane part of the state--the judge and I sat down together and agreed on what the appropriate bonds would be for a SJF, F3, F2 and F1. And if there were factors not alleged in the indictment that should mandate a higher bond, then my office would file a motion requesting a higher bond and would bring forth whatever evidence we needed at the bond hearing to justify a higher bond.

And I know it works like that in medium size jurisdictions across the state, like San Angelo, Lubbock, Tyler. DA sits down with the Sr. judge and has the same discussion. Some judges, I am sure, don't want a conversation they will mandate what the bonds will be. So be it. Their call. But probably leads to a lot of unnecessary bond hearings.

And this same process can work in the big cities too. The problem in today's world is we have judges who don't know "come here from sic'em", and if the Sr. judge says bonds will be "$XYZ", the idiots say "I'm an elected judge too. I will decide what a fair bond is." And will then run with their agenda.

These judges and many DAs know perfectly well what's going on with bail. The problem is that in many jurisdictions, especially large, urban areas these DAs and judges who win elections are social-justice warriors bent on "reforming" what they claim is the inherently racist criminal justice system so they don't require bail.

And when they do require bail they don't punish the bail bondsmen when the criminal skips their bail and court date.

Sad murder-suicide at Rice yesterday.

No information on the perp though it sounds like a bad romance. Still surprised no name, race, etc is released other than the guy is from Florida.

I don't know that a description of the suspect is super important when the guy is dead.

Apparently two gunshots were fired off inside a Rice dorm room but the first report of a problem was when her parents called Rice to do a welfare check when they couldn't get ahold of her.

Never met a rice OG undergrad alum under 50 that's not a complete effing weirdo. Even the older ones are odd sperging ducks.

Lots of friends and acquaintances who did the work-paid MBA, those cats are excluded.

Yes yes I realize the irony here that I am an Aggie who is calling other school alumni weird. There are some super cringe Ags out there, but rice undergrads are truly out there.

As a former Rice student I can agree with this.

Long story short- blew out my knee badly my senior year of HS and all the big programs that had been recruiting me backed off so I went and played at Rice which was the only school to still offer me (besides Ivies and they don't give athletic scholarships). Was there for my freshman year and the fall of my sophomore year when I blew out my knee again and the doctors medically retired me so I transferred to A&M which was my #1 choice to begin with anyway. And despite having lost my "Ag" tag here under a former username or two back via a purge of permabans in the fran era my diploma says Texas A&M.

In my experience, the Ags who are super cringe are usually the ones who are WAAAAAAY too Aggie. I'm talking about wearing painted overalls, giving your kids overly Aggie names (like folks who've named their kids Kyle, Kyleigh, Sully, etc- I used to know a guy who's last name started with a "G" and he named all his kids with "A" names so their initials would be "A.G."), and similar such behavior. For example, I know a guy who was so enraged by some little kid in a tea-sip t-shirt that gave him a "hook 'em" sign at Academy who proceeded to tell this kid (in his telling the kid was about 8) that "Santa isn't real" and he was proud of it in telling the story. I mean, come on man, that's ridiculous- just tell the kid he's adopted or something.

Anyway, you can generally exclude athletes from the overall weirdness at Rice, but, the typical student there is the absurdly smart but socially awkward kid from your HS. The band geek or drama club weirdo. Usually pretty harmless but very often with no interests outside academic pursuits and wound pretty tight. Some loosen up and grow out of it but a lot don't. It may have changed since I was there in 1995/96 but the athletes didn't interact much outside of class with the main student body and there were less than 10 chicks in the entire 2500 or so undergrad student body who would have been considered hot on any other normal campus. I've had buddies in the military talk about chicks being "Iraq hot" when they were deployed- same concept. At least back then a 9 at Rice was probably a 5 at A&M. In fact, it was pretty refreshing when, as I call it, I transferred "home to A&M" to have chicks who were hotter than any girl at Rice pursue me because at Rice every single chick who wasn't completely ugly had 30 different guys pursuing her.

My across the street neighbors are 4 Rice football players. In fact for the last 12 years or so, its been a revolving group of tenants who have all been Rice football players.

Always been a great group of young men and never had an ounce of issue with any of them.

They are for the most part non Texans and have no family nearby. We often have them over for dinner.

They have stated that in class or amongst their student peers, they will not acknowledge the fact that they are athletes. The Typical Rice student looks down on student athletes and consider the athlete below them. Now that is way different than a typical student/student athlete interaction.
