Who was the backup for the Lions in that timeframe who started several games for them one year when their starter got hurt, played pretty well, and then parlayed those starts into a massive payday to be a starter- I think with the Dolphins?

Geez. Not Scott Mitchell. He was the starter.

Gagliano? Did he go to Miami?

I got them reversed. I think Mitchell played well when Marino got hurt, then got paid to suck at Detroit.

Yeah, I think that's correct. My bad.

Mitchell was Marino's backup and played when Marino got hurt (torn Achille's IIRC) and Detroit signed him to a big deal where he proved why he was a backup. Looking up his stats, he didn't even perform that well in that season for Miami- he only completed 57% for 1773 yards and 12 TDs with 8 INTs.

Kramer's life after football had been horrible. His teenage son committed suicide. Then, Kramer depressed from the death and his in the NFL, shot himself in the head but survived.

Oh wow, that is terrible. I had a Kramer relative as a football coach way back when at Alief Youth Association. I don't recall the name though.

Seeing this pictures of "The snake" reminded me of this:

I always thought it was beer, didn't realize until I found this picture it was cola.
I had one of these for many years, in a display case. Then one day I noticed the soda had eaten through the bottom of the can and it was leaking everywhere.

Hard to describe how much I loved the Oilers. They were just like Houston back then; gritty, hard-nosed, blue-collar. We lived and died for them.

In high school I worked at a grocery store, and almost always worked Sundays. During the playoffs, we would use rubber bands to hold the store intercom mike near a transistor radio so we could play the broadcast for all the shoppers. Imagine doing that today!

Me and my brother used to gather all the neighborhood kids and play a game we just called "Billy White Shoes Johnson." We'd P for K a long ball and the guy back deep had to return it against everybody else. We had a long front yard so it was tough, but if you made it through the gauntlet you got to do the shaky leg dance.

My future mother- and father-in-law used to have big game watching parties and everyone in their neighborhood would decorate their yards with Oilers gear on Sundays. When Bum brought the boys back from Pittsburgh, they went to the Dome to join the crowd. For some reason, I decided not to go and missed out.

Man, those were good days.

I had Texans season tickets that first year but never renewed. It was not the same. I haven't watched a game in a decade or more.

Of course it ate through the can.

It was snake venom.

Was it next to a can of Billy Beer?

I was a Cowboys fan living in Houston, but still appreciated and copied the White Shoes TD celebration. It was iconic.

This is an awesome posts and describes us Oiler fans from back then. Now I'm sad again, though...

As I get older I tend to get nostalgic about stuff like this, maybe because the memories are still crystal clear despite going back 25 - 40 years. Man I loved the Houston I grew up in - prefect blend of history, mixed cultures, vision, and space that was gritty and posh at the same time.

Whatever it would cost to buy back the rights from Tennessee to get the Oilers name and colors back would be worth it.

I've said this for years. Some billionaire or politician is missing out on a huge opportunity here. We're such a quiet fanbase in general, but every time I bring up the subject of the Oilers with anyone who grew up here, their eyes light up and they start talking about them with the same passion you see on this thread.
I don't think that the "powers that be" realize how deep the sentiment for that logo and colors runs.
If they somehow came back, it would be insanity here.
I don't think it's possible as long as one of the Adams' own the Titans. And If they did sell, they'd keep the Oilers trademark out of spite.

The odious demon-spawn sow that owns the team would never let that happen.

I think that place is in front of my parents neighborhood.
Back to the troll job that Tannehill pulled during the season. I dig the hell outta that shirt and would buy it if it weren't putting money in the Adam's pocket.

He was a seriously crusty dude. Believe it or not he left sports to become and Anglican priest. Semi-retired but works at St. Paul's in Clear Lake from time to time.

He was head priest at a parish in Tulsa, and I have common friends who were parishioners there. Uniformly loved the guy.

What a lane change. His intro music to his show was Willie Nelson's "Whisky River" which always gave me the impression he was drunk. Well, the way he acted and his opinions led me to believe he was drunk, too....

I had a friend /co-worker that left my company (Forbes top 20 at the time) to become a Catholic priest.
Interesting guy, joined the army right out of high school. did 4 years then went to A&M on gi bill. He went to work with me for 4 or 5 years before leaving us and pursuing his calling. He was around 30 years old when he started seminary.
He's still a priest at a large church in dfw area.
