Speaking of Speedmaster, it is actually a Lemania movement and I guess now a Breguet technically. Regardless you are correct about its history. A 321 in okay condition with (mostly) original parts is on bucket list.

The Omega 9300 and 8500 are made in house and they and their equivalents should comprise the bulk of their flagship offering in the future.

I knew non swatch group manufactures were going to more in house because Swatch wasn't selling the ETA out everyone, but I didn't know Omega was too. Very cool.

If anyone wants the specialness of an in house movement with a very unique clean style that isn't a diner plate on your wrist, I would recommend Nomos. They are easily the best bang for your buck on the market. My next purchase will be a Tangente neomatik.

My Omega Aqua Terra I posted above is the 8500 series. The movement is one reason I chose it.

But what does that mean? ETA and Omega are both Swatch. So if ETA manufactures a movement only Omega uses, is it an Omega movement? What if the parts are all ETA but it's designed by omega? I guess I just don't get the reason to care a whole lot.

yeah, the whole movement argument is a little silly these days. It's just another way to for watch people to attempt to be snotty.

The idea of some artisan hand-crafting your watch with great care thoughtfulness is a nice one, but not reality. ETA makes perfectly good movements.

i believe inside the factory there is a different section that is Omega only that manufactures the omega 8500 and 9300 and derivatives. For the regular run of the mill guy there is absolutely no reason to care a lot, enthusiasts always make a big deal about inconsequential details; especially when they get grotesquely expensive.

dude you cant tell me you really care about whether a watch has a hacking seconds feature, beats at 28,8k or 21.6k vph, or has a free sprung balance. Ive got watches that are rated for more than 2000 foot dives, and my ears hurt when i have to get my kids pool toys at the bottom of my 7 foot deepend

I don't care who made the movement in my Planet Ocean. I like the watch.

Why do you $4000 like it when you can have a quartz one for a fraction of a fraction of that?

Is it just a status thing?

Find me a quartz planet ocean.

Not that many people instantly recognize what I have. It isn't nearly as much of a status watch as my Rolex is, but I prefer my Omega. I use the rubber bracelet, not the metal one, which is significantly less flashy.

So it is worth $4000 because you like how it looks? I am honestly asking.

I am not a watch guy. I know absolutely nothing about them. But I received a Tissot prs200 as a gift one year. Are Tissot watches considered decent (at the introductory end of course), or are they just overpriced low end watches? Thanks in advance for entertaining my ignorance.

they are certainly decent, and would be considered a luxury watch by 97% of the world

For most people on this thread, the differences between the "in-house" movements and a typical ETA are so slight, that it's purely marketing.

I like it. What more is needed? I've always liked watches, especially dive watches (I did my first SCUBA dive over 20 years ago and have been PADI Rescue certified since 98.) I like that a nice watch such as this can be a family heirloom that I can pass to my son someday. I like that while it is a nice watch, and that it isn't that flashy (as a Sub would be)

If it was $400 or $4000 or $14000, what else is needed other than I like it and can afford to buy it?

Sorry to hijack -- So what's the most expensive watch anyone has worn diving, swimming, in shower, etc? I have no desire to do so, and would prolly get a cheapy to spend anytime under water. Just curious...

I wear my Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean for all that. Working on my cars, SCUBA diving, surfing, you name it. I have a couple dings on the bezel, but nothing I care about.

Honesty, Seiko and Grand Seiko are the best value watches in the market, easily. My Seiko Astron cost about $1200 bucks, has a ceramic bezel, high polish titanium case and bracelet, automatic GPS time changing (syncs with 4 satellites) so when I go out of the country I push a button and the time and date set itself. It has the most beautiful crystal treatment I've ever seen where the glass basically disappears; and the attention to detail on the face is ridiculous. The watch is insanely attractive, extremely high tech, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. For any newbies looking for a great super versatile economical watch, you've gotta check out the astron.

Where would be the best place to buy this watch?

I wore my sub to Disneyworld and at the hotel waterpark last week. I don't drive, but I've worn it to the beach. The only watch I have more valuable than that is a JLC and it is a dress watch. I would never wear it for something like that.
