What would expect her to do in that situation? Didn't her husband go to one of the cabins and got swept away w/ a camper on his back? Did she go up the hill in the aftermath and check on the 800 or so that did survive?

If she had tried to go out during the flood, she'd probably be a victim too.

Would that make you happy?

The person that would likely be in charge of doing that is also a victim.

That is why I said her lawyers should have a public relations specialist help her with it. She was a victim, but it was her family responsible for the care of hundreds of kids, 27 of whom died in their care. Her kids, siblings, etc. should have stepped up to help if she was not able to handle it. The silence suggests that nobody did.

So a woman's entire life and support system has been ripped away by a natural disaster.

Sounds like she needs more support right now than just a world and a courtroom reminding her that her late husband made mistakes.

Her whole support system and life wasn't ripped away from her. She lost a husband. There are many other members of her family who worked at and lived on the camp property and who were available to help her. It was a tragedy and I am not unsympathetic to that. But it also happened nearly 11 months ago, and your assertion is that she was too broken up in those 11 months to write out a condolence card to the families of kids she was supposed to be taking care of who died on her watch, but she and her family were just fine doing all the work necessary to gear up to welcome in nearly a thousand campers for summer 2026? That screams of seriously messed up priorities.

It's obvious that you have no firsthand knowledge of the camp or the terrain, like so many of the posters here.
By 2AM, she was cut off from The Flats by a raging Bubble Gum Creek. It was physically impossible for her to get to those girls. She in no way abandoned them!

I'm sure she wanted the questioning to end, and that was the quickest means. Like I said, don't believe everything you read.

Some level of humanity between the two parties would be expected, and in my opinion, the lack of it coming from the Eastlands is a mistake on the part of their lawyers because it will likely influence some of the potential jury pool for any coming trials. It makes them come across as uncaring and unremorseful and that is something they should be avoiding, not just to be human, but to appear human from a legal angle.

Are you aware of how many funerals she attended?!

No. She did not come to Mary Grace's funeral. And as far as I know the Eastlands have not contacted my family at all which is bizarre in my opinion. And the Eastlands did not help in the recovery stuff as far as I can tell. It was all first responders which is also bizarre.

My understanding from Texas Monthly is that at least one member of the Eastland family attended every funeral. That doesn't really change that they have been completely silent to the families otherwise. Obviously if that is what their lawyers are telling them to do, it is what it is. I just think it is a mistake on their part.

Please note that I am not questioning whether they are sorry for what happened or remorseful. I am sure they are. By all accounts they are good people and you can't run a camp like that for so long and so successfully without a deep level of caring. I am just questioning their communications strategy with regard to the families.

No, I have no firsthand knowledge of any of it. I was just answering your question regarding where did the word "abandoned" come from. It was from the Texas Board of Nursing, and Mary Elizabeth Eastland's own testimony in court.

But don't let the facts get in the way of your own narrative.

AI is so funny. I asked Gemini this question

Quote:

Did Texas monthly report that at least one member of the Eastland family came to every funeral of the 27 children killed at Camp Mystic in July, 2025?

Gemini said the opposite. That it was well documented that families were outspoken in legal petitions and public statements that explicitly state the Eastlands avoided contact and did not come to funerals. It also guessed as to where the "every funeral" myth came from, suggesting it was from the reports regarding the 1987 Comfort, TX flash floods incorrectly attributed to the July 2025 disaster.

I too grew up on the Guadalupe River. Lived there over 30 years. I'm an old and my family homesteaded on the Guadalupe in the mid 1800's. Family still owns land on the river.
All of the land along the Guadalupe in the hill country originally was all ranches with similar homesteading backgrounds.
If you research the locations of the original barns and ranch houses, few, were ever washed away in floods.
Many of those old immigrants around Kerrville, Spring Branch, New Braunfels…were from the Elbe River valley in Germany.
They had generations of experience of river life.
Upon settling in Texas along the Guadalupe they were very attuned to reading the land and where to build homes out of the harms way of river floods.
They didn't have maps with lines of 100 year or 500 year projected floods. They had the knowledge to read the land.
An example of that is this…. Right after the war my dad purchased a small piece of land on the Guadalupe from my then great grandfather. He picked a spot for the house that surveyed 49' above normal pool stage of the river.
My grandfather told him not to build the house there. He based that on the fact that one of his fields, even higher in elevation of the house sight, had sandy loam soil that my grandfather said was deposited by the river hundreds or thousands of years ago…..evidence that the river could indeed get that high.
Mind you the family had been there since the mid 1880's and had never witnessed the river even getting close to that high…but they knew….by looking at the land….that he definitely had been that high over time.
Against what my grandfather said, Dad built our home on that spot anyway.
Well in 1978 the Guadalupe had a catastrophic flood and our house got 3' of water through it and washed our entire barn away that was 8' lower in elevation of our house. It reached the same flood stage the next night as well.
The gauge by Spring Branch measured a little over 42' but at Rebecca Creek it was measured at 51'.
In Comparison the 2025 flood measured 35' feet at Spring Branch I believe.
Bottom line is that flood in 1978 was above the then marked 100 year flood plain.
However the old homestead house and barns were not even close to getting water to them.
Those old settlers definitely had the knowledge…..we should have learned from them.

The '25 flood measured 56' above flood
way down off 474 North of Boerne and 52' at Spring Branch crossing at 281.

Your numbers are in error. At 52' at Spring Branch it would have been about 7' over the old 281 Bridge. That didn't happen in the 2025 flood. In fact, in July 2025, the Guadalupe never got close to the 45'+ crest measured at the Spring Branch gauge that happened in 1978. The 2025 crest at that gauge was actually 15' + lower than the 1978 flood crest measured at that said gauge.
Here is the link for the actual data recorded in July 2025 at the Spring Branch gauge….and subsequent historic crest measurements at that gauge of other years, including 1978.

This seems as good a place as any.

No, it wasn't a giant wall of water that no one could escape or an Act of God that no one at all could have done anything about. A simple plan to walk up to high ground could have saved 27 lives.

God bless those councilors who looked around and made the right decision on their own. The adults never helped them.

The State issued their report

https://senate.texas.gov/_assets/pdf/2026.06.18-FINAL-report-Signatures.pdf

Quote:

AUSTIN The deaths of 27 campers and counselors at Camp Mystic were not inevitable, state investigators said Thursday, finding the summer camp failed to meet emergency planning requirements, train its staff or evacuate quickly despite multiple chances to prevent the tragedy.

Their findings raised additional questions about Camp Mystic and decisions of its leader, Richard "Dick" Eastland, who died in the flood after his car was swept away with as many as 13 children and counselors inside, investigators said. All died.

Amid the natural disaster, at least 39 adult staff were within reach of the children. But no one ever ordered them to help the campers, leading to a situation where for hours staff could have safely assisted in evacuations, the report said.

In a 115-page report, investigators Casey Garrett and Michael Massengale found Camp Mystic had no written emergency evacuation plans, lacked preparation for possible flood events, had ample time to evacuate and that reunification efforts and incident management were "chaotic, with traumatic effects for families," a summary of the investigators' findings said.

Garrett reiterated Thursday that the only emergency plans for flood evacuations were known to Eastland. The only written disaster plans called for children to shelter inside their cabins during emergencies.

They also provided a timeline of events indicating that while Eastland was aware of the dangers of flooding at the camp, he failed to properly heed flood warnings the National Weather Service had issued. Leadership did not inform counselors about the potential for overnight floods.

And when the water began to rise, Garrett described counselors' reactions to a scenario for which they had never been trained. Some left their campers while self-evacuating. Others called for help over walkie-talkies that were never answered.

"Some were in cars, some were walking," Garrett said. "It was total chaos."

Several of the victims' families have sued Camp Mystic, alleging the camp's owners were negligent and are liable for their children's deaths. A Texas board suspended the nursing license of Eastland's daughter-in-law Mary Liz Eastland, who served as the camp's medical director.

None of this is news. People just didn't want to believe it.There was obviously time to save those 27 lives simply by using the camp loud speakers or going to every cabin and tell them to evacuate. To me, the evidence of negligence is overwhelming. I know there are those who disagree. Lastly, I take no joy in any of this. So sad.

If you watched the deposition, it was hard to come to any other conclusion that that which was reached by the Senate in this report. It's such a tragedy and several of these girls and their families are still not close to OK and may never be again... even some of those who survived the floods have already had issues returning to camp. I know of at least one girl whose family had to come remove her from camp during the heavy hill country rains last week.

Please keep them in your prayers... especially as the anniversary of this horror is nearly upon us.

Which makes it a weird filing in that case as the petition lists assets of 100K-500K. The land alone is worth many multiples of that. The last appraisal district filing measured it at $15 Million.

What i don't get is, wouldn't some external source have had to review these emergency protocols at some point over the last couple decades? Im sure they were insured, wouldn't that insurance company be liable?

Not talking whether the parents should have read it and seen it as not good enough before hand, as they can't be expected to be experts in that field.

DSHS was supposed to be doing that. But what came out in the investigative report was that the DSHS inspection was largely a check-the-box exercise if camps told the agency that they indeed had a plan. A lot of these camps had become lax in their "safety culture." Heck...Camp La Junta had a cabin full of kids float down the river and had Heart of the Hills been in session you could be looking at more than 100 deaths. Mystic got caught and turned out to be emblematic of a larger problem.
