I understand the part about ignorance is bliss. Down here where I live, there are bothrops, lachesis and crotalus species. I'm often in knee high grass or in the forest and wonder how often I've passed within shrinking distance of these snakes. They can alter the course of your life.

My wife said to look into this to advocate for yourself if you ever get bit and need support. The majority of MDs dont have a clue how to deal with snake bites.

These guys also have an extremely active facebook page (almost 500k members), as well, where they are always handling active bites on humans and pets. I'd say about half of the ones I read are not correctly handled by the staff at whatever ER bite victims go to.

Ten or so feet from my front door. Bell Co. near the lake.

We see snakes all the time at our house but that's the first coral and only the second poisonous. Had a rattle snake dead in the road ten or so years ago. That's it.

Big dude. Wonder how long it had lived there.

Venomous, if being semantically correct. Since you will likely not eat it poisonous doesn't apply. Coral snakes are, indeed, venomous.

My mom's family is from all over Bell County and me and my "city" brother had much fun growing up visiting our country cousins. Very educational too -- like we learned that to kill a rattlesnake crossing the road at night you needed to slam on the brakes and skid over it and not just run it over. That was 40 years or so ago so probably not the same snake you saw. We saw quite a few then, and in the many hunting trips we had on their land over the years.

So snakes have a better chance now that cars have ABS that prevent skidding?

Another snake thread connection -- this happened just down the road from me where I live now in Arkansas. My boy plays for another high school in town or we'd be a little more freaked about it.

Headed to the national reptile Expo in Daytona Beach, Florida on Thursday. Hopefully buying two or three snakes. Looking for a South American tricolor hognose, grey banded king snake, and Mexican hognose.

Going to the national reptile expo in less than an hour! So excited! Will take lots of pictures.

I've been wanting to go for 20 years. Life has always gotten in the way. Hopefully, will come back with 2-3 snakes.
