That's a harmless western rat snake. It looks like it's in a chicken coop, which is why a lot of people call them "chicken snakes".

No but we have had a rat/mice problem off and on. I've kept them out of the house but have trapped several big A rats. I'm sure that dude could find a meal in my shrubs.

We had the luck to see an eyelash viper up in a tree, but we missed the fer-de-lance…although I wasn't exactly hoping we'd run into one

I should've labeled it. I knew what it was, just wanted to share for fun, and yes, that's a chicken coop. No chickens lost, but possibly a few eggs. It was not killed, just relocated by a kid's dad who is all the teachers' hero today. This was in Granbury.

Prairie kingsnakes often get confused with Great Plains ratsnakes (and vice versa). I think the main difference is prairie kings have an arrow on their head that points to the neck while GPR's have an arrow on their head that point to their nose.

GPR:






GPR's are also considerably more "bug-eyed" and the neck thins out before it hits the hit. PK's have no neck.

Lots of water snakes out today, three of them were taking turns going into a hole by a creek runoff and coming out by the water. Two of them tangled up for a few seconds.

It is a coral and it does fit the rhyme. The red is just very dark. The snake is probably close to shed and likely a Texas coral which often has lots of black flecks in the red bands.
